Painting directly onto circuitry

I have an offbrand firewire enclosure that has an absolutely awful case, so I'm going to pull out the electronics and build my own case around it. I'd like to do an open-air enclosure - this would involve applying paint directly to the firewire board. I've heard that most spray paints are non-conductive, but I'm still a bit worried. I assume that applying even a thin layer of spray paint directly to parts that get hot could result in overheating, so I'll definitly mask off those bits, but is there anything else I should be worried about?

Open Air? Define. Example Pix?

I wouldn't put gunk on circuitry - it's too permenant. I might consider wrapping it in some kind of nonconductive tape first... some of my "rebuilt" computers contain newspaper, masking tape, or wax paper. Then you could paint away.

Re: Painting directly onto circuitry

Can what ever circuitry in the thing be taken out before you paint it.

I don't really understand your question.

What I get from that is you intend to paint the circuitry to make it look better or something, or is it exposed though vents etc... that are near what you wan't to paint.

I am sure that you could get the answers you are looking for if you post some more detailes.

Re: Painting directly onto circuitry

Generally, painting circutry seems like a bad idea to me.  It sounds like you don't like the case the drive came in (?)  If my assumption is correct, i would advise finding another case to put it in.
