Re: 10.3.8 issues

Safari has quit on me several times today and I once had to hard reboot system because I was caught in limbo between OS Classic and OSx.  I did repair permissions and think that it helped.  I am downloading combo just to be sure though.  Also noticed fan goin a little crazy.  12 inch PowerBook with 1 Ghz.

Re: 10.3.8 issues

Yeah, delete your system log file.  Really great idea.  Next time, find out what's flooding system.log (console.app will do just fine) and delete the offender (in this situation, iShock), but do NOT delete system.log!  At best it won't help at all - OS X might just recreate it and the flood will continue, and at worst things will start falling from the sky because OS X can't find it's system.log file.  System.log is your friend.

Re: 10.3.8 issues

Gah, it hit me too >_<.  I trashed every ishock file and stopped its cancerous rampage.  Now I'm stuck with a 27.7 GB system.log.0 file (I also have a system.log file too, but it's only 167MB).  Console refuses to empty it (it just pretends to clear it off and it reloads it back on again), and WhatSize doesn't work either (It gives me an error saying it could not delete it, then moves a copy or fake copy or something into the trash).  What's the procedure in terminal to delete it, or should I delete it?

Re: 10.3.8 issues

oh hell, just delete it.  Just take a look at the the permissions before you do, then make a new text file with the same name and give it the right permissions.

Yay!  I left the computer on all night after ripping ishock's guts out, and everything finally went back to normal!  system.log is back to normal size and I have 28.17 GB free again <3

Re: 10.3.8 issues

I just had my third or fourth gray screen of restart since the update.
My HD space is normal...
Could be a guilty app? Any way to find out?
I just checked my system log and says this:

(before this the last entry is 3 jours ago)
Feb 15 09:47:29 Aki ntpd[276]: time reset 0.384396 s
Feb 15 09:47:29 Aki ntpd[276]: synchronisation lost
(between this and the moment at what I restarted the computer was alone, Freefall screen saver was running... maybe is to much for my 800mhz iBook?)
Feb 15 11:05:30 localhost syslogd: restart
(after this is the normal restart process)

I'll change the screen saver just to test my only theory, but any kind of help is welcome.

Re: 10.3.8 issues

to anyone who is still having G5 fan issues (that is, they start up at random times): i found another solution in the apple discussions. go to system preferences>energy saver>options>processor performance and select "highest". That solved it for me. I'm not sure why, but it did.

Re: 10.3.8 issues

well, really the only problem with 10.3.8 from what i gather here is iShock.

iBook G4 | 12" | 40GB | 1.33GHz | 512MB | Combo | 10.4.3
iMac G4 | 15" | 40GB | 700MHz | 512MB | Combo | 10.4.2

Re: 10.3.8 issues

i don't have i-shock and i do have problems with 10.3.8.
i updated to 10.3.8 and i understand i am not alone in experiencing undesirable changes. i went into my local apple store, rec'd advice on how to remedy, but still unresolved.
symptoms discovered, so-far, include:
my dock was changed - size contents, behaviour.
my safari favourites lost, menu favourites menu bar changed.
i-tunes playlists lost. had to repeat procedure for i-tunes that i went thru when i installed 10.3. library considered "damaged" and was replaced. after trying to restore my library, i now have dupes of a LOT o' tunes - read: almost ALL - which seem to need INDIVIDUAL editing - ugh.
keychain is jacked, so safari quits frequently and tells me on launch, and often after that, "Keychain 'login' cannot be found to store 'Safari'".
(and, perhaps, further delights to look forward to.)
the advice for fixing keychain was to go to sys prefs>accounts and change login password, which was expected to update my keychain.
i tried this multiple times, w/restarts inbetween, sometimes the keychain was locked, sometimes unlocked. i tried it w/a shutdown and rest period as well.
i repaired permissions before going to applestore. and a couple of times since then.
(i didn't boot from the cd to do that tho' - it looked like it just wanted to reinstall 10.3 when i booted from install disk 1)
i think i'd like to avoid rewriting my drive to re-install my previous os 10.3.6or7?, if possible.
any hope?
thanx

Re: 10.3.8 issues

hey anguspodgorney, did you use the combo installer? Have you tried downloading it from apple's website and running it?

If you create a new user in system preferences and log in as them to the problems go away?

When you booted from the cd, did you try running the Disk Utility from the File(? or was it Apple?) menu and hitting repair disk / repair permissions?

Re: 10.3.8 issues

Just pure positives here. My folks haven't been able to update their G5's(iMac) software since October '04 b/c it was so difficult to get a working broadband connection in the house. Now that it is there, updating via Software Update, the 102Mb combo from 10.3.5 to 10.3.8 solved a really strange and annoying problem where the finder takes a whole minute of beachballing to launch, and then after about 3 logins/outs between different users the mouse would not move the pointer at all, ever again until restart. Repaired permissions, ran crons, updated prebinding(which didn't resolve the problem), then installed software, rebooted and all is fine and fast like ever it was. And I was preparing for a complete reinstallation of the OS...lol

1)  i don't know if software updater gave me the combo installer or not. apple's site gives the same date for both versions. i'm considering the combo, among other things - such as disk warrior, returning to my original 10.3 cd - after backing up my hd.
2)  thanx for the 2nd user suggestion. i created one and have no safari problems under that user as of yet.
which suggests that nice_applestore_guy was right in his thinking to suggest changing my log-in password to restore keychain. it even looked like it was going to work, as it warned me that changing the password would result in changing it in keychain for safari as well.
3)  no - i didn't try running the disk utility at all. it started to look like re-installing original 10.3 was the only thing it wanted to do, and i hadn't backed up things, so i quit.

thanx again

dear Macskeeball,
is it an unwritten, but generally understood forum netiquette to not use colour text?
if so, please forgive me, as i'm new to the forum thing.

i notice that nobody else seems to use colour text.
in the interest of not distracting the forum from more mac-related issues, i will stop using olive-coloured text in my posts, and "conform to the norm".

personally, i find smilies/emoticons annoying. so i just don't use them.

Oh, ok. Since you're new I can understand that. Colored text is ok but only if used very sparingly, for emphasis. For example, I have used it when posting instructions to help emphasize any warnings. Please do not color entire posts, and do not ry to color something in every post.

On online forums, there is no such thing as tone of voice. Many people, but not myself, read posts with a monotonous voice. Sometimes the words alone do not make your emotions clear, and emoticons help to give others a visual cue so that they are less likely to misinterpret what you are saying.

Well, back tot the topic at hand. I don't use Safari much but I've had to force quit my Firefox app several times since updating. Since this is a new machine it's a little tough to compare it to what it was before the upgrade. I might try reinstalling Firefox and deleting all the preferences. If it doesn't fix the issue I may go back to 10.3.7 since I have barely used this machine and have almost no data saved on it.
