Critical Issues and America

I just was assigned a lengthy report about critical issues, and I chose to focus around social justice, and censorship. I just wanted to know everyone else's opinion on the subjects. I personally feel that censorship and lack of social justice is destroying our once awesome country from the inside. I also believe that although I do respect the choice of religion, some are taking it too far.  Really? Banning Sponge-bob because it promotes tolerating gays? Don't we have something better things to work on like all the atrocities being committed around the world.  Even our government had Manifest Destiny. Quoting Zack de La Rocha, "Ignorance has taken over, we gotta take the power back."

What's your thoughts?

Oh, I've wasted my life.

Re: Critical Issues and America

I've done several reports on the MPAA.  Thats always something interesting to look at when talking abuot censorship.  They seem to have a policy of mind-numbing violence being a-okay but as soon as someone says a bad word they freak out.

Re: Critical Issues and America

If you mention the spongebob issue (which i haven't heard of...) make sure you talk about the push to get rid of Christianity in America.  The blocking of the use of the words "Merry Christmas" during Christmas time, and things like that.  If you don't think it was a problem, thats all the conservative talk show hosts talked about in December.

Ah but saying "Merry Christmas" is different.  Thats like saying "Happy Gay Pride day" to random people, which wouldn't be a good idea in some sort of official sense, like from your bank teller or something.

Re: Critical Issues and America

Well I'd rather someone say happy hanukah to me than show my little brother a tv show promoting gay tolerance.  When I was little my parents would rather have had someone wish me a happy kwanzaa than have a TV show try to teach me what's their job to teach me, especially if it were one discussing sexuality.

Of course that's what they were all talking about. It's far easier to hop on the party line and spew paranoia than it is to come up with an original thought of your own. shrug

Re: Critical Issues and America

Oh yeah, we are talking about censorship.  Almost forgot.  The obvious would be to talk about the way people are bending 9/11 and "family values" to control what 1st amnd. rights cover.  Also talk about the spin that keeps anyone from a less-than right opinion from feeling comfortable about "liberal" or non-Right discussion.  This, in itself, is censorship.  I really am neither jakas or elephant, but believe that GOP has done a wonderful? job of getting their spin out there in alarming ways to make oposition fearful.

I agree, but wait, if that were true most of my close friends would be dead!  What is the spice of life again?  But seriously, I love the sarcasim.

Re: Critical Issues and America

On the topic of censorship and social justice, I think the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution are pretty clear on both topics.  It's apparent however, that certain groups of people have found room with which to interpret their own political leanings into the words.

An interesting study in American History is the verrry sloooowww extension of the ideals set forth in both documents to more and more of the populace.
At first only white male property owners over 21 truly were afforded equal protection under the law.  Then, voting rights were extended to include all males over 21.  etc., etc., etc.

This process is not a steady progression.  Great strides in the area of social justice were made immediately after the civil war.  They were short-lived, however.  "Jim Crow" laws in the South, as well as several Supreme Court decisions severely limited the newly-found freedom of African-Americans.

Several Acts of Congress and Executive Orders have limited free expression from time to time.  The Alien and Sedition Acts and the recent Patriot Act are examples of Congressional action.  Abraham Lincoln issued several executive orders during the Civil War which limited freedoms of Americans.  These sorts of activities usually takes place in a time of percieved crisis for the country.  The Administration takes the opportunity that normally would not be acceptable to the general populace.

Re: Critical Issues and America

They can say "Merry Christmas" if they don't get mad when I say "Ho Saturnalia!" That's tolerance.

As for your report: Do it on corporate personhood. That's a big issue that nobody else is going to do.

Yes because everyone knows that the only thing teachers do is have PBS running in the class rooms 24/7.

It's also not their job to raise people's kids.  The parents obviously don't want to take responsibility as shown by their lack of control of what their kids do.  So, it looks like the kids are left on their own because of their parents lack of responsibility.  Way to teach your kids responsibility (among other things)! up

EDIT: Bloody hell.  Can the word censors at least replace a capitalized word with a capitalized censor?

Maybe we could have freedom of the press again? And stop censoring the real news.
