Mysterious iBook internet death -- if you can help you're a genius
I was downloading a folder of files via FTP using Transmit. I wanted to open that remote folder (from within Transmit) to get some file names when it said the server had closed the connection. I tried to reconnect twice, no luck. I believe after that is when all internet connectivity went nuts on my iBook (OS X 10.3.7). Here are the facts:
Ethernet: Reporting a self-assigned IP. WILL NOT connect to anything on the internet. WILL NOT connect to the router. WILL connect to local Macs (OS 9) via appleshare. Can't connect to PCs via IP at all. I can also connect TO the iBook from those Macs via appleshare.
Airport: Reporting correct IP from router. WILL NOT connect to anything on the internet. WILL connect to the router. WILL connect to ALL local Macs (appleshare) and PCs (IP).
Modem: Connects to the internet fine.
All other computers (Macs & PCs) on the network can access the internet as usual.
Here's what I've tried: Renewing the DHCP lease several times (ethernet). Ran Cocktail and restarted. Switched cables from router to iBook. Connecting the modem directly results in a self-assigned IP as well.
Like the subject says, if you can figure this one out you're a genius...or at least more experienced than I, and I've been working on Macs for a long time.

Well, I just remembered that I turned FTP sharing on, it didn't really work, so I turned it off, could that be the issue?? I've done that before with no problem.

Disconnect the router from the network connection, and disconnect each computer from the router. Reboot your cable/DSL modem (whichever it is). Then reboot and reconnect the router. Then reconnect the computers.
I just had to reboot my cable modem because my connection was dying a slow death. Speeds were dropping from over 2 Meg per second to basically nothing. After a hard reboot of the cable modem, like magic all was well.

Thank you for your suggestions, but it never got to that point. After I booted at work and verified that it wasn't actually dead, I attempted to turn it on again and it just refused to get passed the gray Apple screen. It just snowballed from there and I erased the drive. I keep all my files on external drives and backup everything, so it's no big deal, just a pain in the butt.
