Microsoft's Consumer Anti-Spyware Tool Will Be Free
"We've looked hard at the nature of this problem, and made a decision that this anti-spyware capability will become something that's available at no additional charge for Windows users - both the blocking capability, and the scanning and removal capabilities. Those are features we think should be available to protect every system," Gates said.

we've looked closely at this issue and have determined that it's our fault people have to use this software in the first place, so we can't sell it as a separate product, ethically, but we can roll the cost into future operating system upgrade costs. so yeah. it'll be free.
think of the great press we'll get for it too!
...and watch out for the flying meat!

It already is free - MS is just being a bunch of doofi (doffuses? plural of doofus?)
What do you want to bet there's a "critical" security patch for it? And at least Ad-Aware won't phone home to anybody.

ad-aware is crap.
do a full scan with adaware, then do a scan with security task manager corporate and hijack this...
smurfing micky mouse crap.
adaware doesnt find anything
Additionally, the pop up blocker that is included in SP2 is already 100 times more useful than adaware.
I also use other programs, but it seems to me microsoft is doing something right here. so go smurf yourself if you just want to turn it around and call it a publicity stunt..

Done and done - didn't find anything Ad-aware didn't. The active protection looks interesting though. I might try checking out a couple reviews, see if it's worth the $30.

That's true - but then, neither did STM. I have a firewall, use Mozilla, and run an otherwise tight ship.
Additionally, the pop up blocker that is included in SP2 is already 100 times more useful than adaware.
That's because Ad-aware isn't a popup blocker. Again, I have Mozilla - haven't seen a popup in ages.

They are doing something right... finally. However, MS also has a history of software that restricts my fair use rights, violates my privacy, hides behind long, obtuse language in EULAs, and automatically updates itself.
They could release an anti-spyware tool that is efficient, simple, easy to use, effective, free, frequently updated, and which doesn't nag me, annoy me, upgrade itself without user intervention (thereby altering the EULA to the one for the newer version) or phone home for no apparent reason.
But I don't think they will.
What can I say, I'm a h8er.
p.s. - watch your language. We're talking about computer here, for crying out loud. I didn't insult your grandma.

Don't worry. He's just a little hardcore.
By little, I mean radically, and by hardcore, I mean that he frequently borders on DBaJ and his one-sided views don't quite seem to match up in a MacAddict forum.
I don't hold anything against BBQ, its just that he is one-sided, and its not the side you'd expect in MAF.
