Re: Bush plan pays big for SUVs
We understand that SUVs are included, but other vehicles are too. Its not EXCLUSIVE
the language regarding vehicles limits the tax benefit to those with a gross vehicle weight rating of 6,000 pounds or more. That means full-size SUVs and pickups.

I have
a real estate agent about to buy a 20-mpg midsize SUV that doesn't qualify for the deduction might opt for a full-size SUV instead, because it does qualify
You are correct Ronald.

I just assumed the age group here was older, for some reason (though now many things are beginning to make sense...)

I always thought so too. I was shocked to learn that many posters here are in the 15-18 year old range.

The question was if you were 'of legal drinking age,' not if you chose to drink despite the law.
I understand what you're saying, though. Are you in college, or still high school?

Re: Bush plan pays big for SUVs
I'm 40. I have underwear older than the legal drinking age
The young average age does explain much that goes on on these boards. Oh well, kids never change, I used to think I had a clue at their age too.
And no SO, you simply don't understand the tax codes and what the proposed change is. Simply put, it's to allow acclerated depreciation on larger trucks etc again. They have ALWAYS been fully deductable over term. Basically it's another economic stimilus idea. Or shall we now argue about the effect Detroit has on the US economy?

Re: Bush plan pays big for SUVs
Back on track: Bestbuy, your Dad is a thief if he tries to buy you a car and deduct it. Two fun words for you: IRS audit.
The problem with the system isn't that the deduction will be allowed, that's a good thing IMO. The problem is that SUVs are considered industrial vehicles, and so they can skirt a lot of regualtions including safety and environmental.
Now why don't all you kids go back to the sandbox and play with your Tonkas.

Re: Bush plan pays big for SUVs
How are SUVs not industrial vehicles?
Tell you what, you tell me how they are industrial vehicles. Start with the Toyota RAV4, the PT Cruiser, and the Kia thing that I can't remember the name of.
An SUV is just a glorified station wagon with four wheel drive.
They serve no more an industrial purpose than a Subaru Legacy.
