Cicuit City Washing Sucks

The local Circuit City store recently relocated to a new building, right across the highway from their main competition Best Buy. I went in there this morning to check out the place, and to buy an iPod Shuffle, because I had heard they had some in stock. Well the Shuffles were there, but I left without buying one.

The customer service at Circuit City has always been bad, but I usually could find someone to get merchandise out of a locked case. This morning I looked about four aisles in each direction from the case, and could not find anyone. Mind you it was 11:00 a.m.. Maybe they were all taking an early lunch.

There was a comatose looking dude leaning up against a post at the front of the store who, because of his dress and name tag, appeared to be a manager of some sort. I decided not to bother the guy. Why interrupt his nap?

Circuit City has had some financial problems, and is closing some stores. I can understand why. Their service stinks.

I won't ever go there again.

I sent them a polite email describing the problem, but I don't expect to ever hear from them except for some automatic response acknowledgement.

What is wrong with those people?

Whenever I go to Circuit City or Best Buy I feel like a pariah. Maybe I should wear a sandwich board printed with something like "customer willing to spend up to $1500 on a digital camera" because I always have to track down the personnel to ask questions or even to get stuff out of display cases for immediate purchases.

"Service economy" is a misnomer--more like "self-service economy." shrug

Guess when Circuit City "sales counselors" stopped caring?  It probably coincides with the day they stopped using the commission system.  For the record, I worked there years ago.  I was on top of everything and made pretty decent money.  Still, I left the job because most customers were jackasses.  Take away the money, and why bother?

Yeah - last time I went in to BestBuy to get a wireless router - same thing. Couldn't get help for smurf.
I knew what router I wanted - but I was looking for a firefire cable for my iPod.

I suppose having the Bicycle helmet on didn't help - I wasn't going to be buying anything big - but smurf, that's lousy service, and lousy service like that does effect where I buy stuff when I am buying something big.

Re: Cicuit City Washing Sucks

Shoot! You want "persona non-grata"? I'm a middle aged woman shopping in the Apple department in Comp USA! I'm quite sure that the clerks in there see me as their worst nightmare! My son and I shopped for his college notebook computer. Every clerk in every store latched on to him and when he'd point to me the clerk's face would crumble. Then I would start listing screen size, usb ports, firewire ports, +/_ DVD burner, hard drive size, amount of RAM installed, GHz requirements, etc. The clerks would stare at me then jerk their stares to my son. He'd shrug and say, "Whatever Mom says. She knows alot more about computers than I do." I love my son! We had a great time playing "Jerk the Clerk"!

Re: Cicuit City Washing Sucks

There's only one thing you can do:  Before you enter any of these places, try to know just what it is you want, and where it is within the store. Avoid any and all contact with the red shirts (circuit city) or blue shirts (best buy)

This is what the low-wage/high-turnover business model has led to. Shoddy service, goods which are frequently over-priced. (my own opinion) and consumers who are not left with any options, or any real choice.  This is not the way it was 25 years ago.

There was a comatose looking dude leaning up against a post at the front of the store who, because of his dress and name tag, appeared to be a manager of some sort. I decided not to bother the guy. Why interrupt his nap?

The problem: This month, he's working at circuit city. Next month, he'll be working at the Cingular store across the street, or perhaps the quickie oil change place. Maybe he'll go back to delivering pizza.  Heck, maybe he'll decide to totally veg out, and get a job as a contract security guard at the mall. (Gets to flirt with the babes!) He doesn't care. There's no reason why he should.  This is the way the entire country will be doing business before too long.

I don't know that the commission system was/is any better. There's a chain around the New England area called Levitz Furniture. ("You'll love it at Levitz!") Their entire sales force is strictly commission. They have a policy: In every store, whoever comes in dead last in terms of sales every quarter gets fired.  So, the "in your face" mentality is pretty nasty. I have heard the company gets in trouble with the state office of consumer affairs frequently, but I don't know that as fact.

Off topic:  Has anyone noticed the demise of Sam Goody music stores, and Suncoast video stores?  The last remaining stores in the Boston area appear to have taken a final dirt nap.

I think there is a suncoast at the local Redding mall.

With respect to Levitz - they use to be all over the Bay Area. I don't know if they still are or not.

"You'll love it at Levitz" - that's from the 70's, if not earlier - they really need to update that jingle.

Re: Cicuit City Washing Sucks

I didn't say commission was better necessarily.  It made me do all sorts of things I still feel guilty about.  It's just a good motivator, that's all.  Circuit City does suck, they treat their employees and customers terribly.  For instance, when CompuServe rolled out its "Sign your soul over to us and get a free computer" scam we HAD to complete 20 of those transactions a month or run the risk of termination.  I hated doing that.  The job as a whole was fun thanks to my wacky co-workers but the pressure just got too high after almost two years and I had to move on.

Oh, that and the shirts were WAY too big.  Try wearing a men's large when you weigh 110 pounds.

It probably was Levitz. There was one in Watertown, just outside Boston. They had those signs up and down for a long time, before the place actually closed.

Most of the complaints on file with the MA office of consumer affairs involve "bait and switch" advertising, goods damaged when delivered, taking customers' money and never delivering goods purchased, and all the other usual smurf.  It was WBZ TV's I-team which did the investigation on the store, and learned about the high-pressure sales methods.  Apparently, some customers actually felt too intimidated to just get up and walk out.

There was a furniture store in Pinole that did that - but they always changed the name.
It was a scam though - the "new" store was owned by family of the "old" store - and six months later, they would go out of business - with the "old" owner deciding to go back into business. Etc.

Their furniture was crap, too.

My strategy is to go into those stores with a specific product in mind, ignore all sales people, and buy my apple stuff from the website.

Eh, doesn't affect me, I love the newbury comics on newbury st. Of course their "used cds" are way over priced, but whatever.

The only Levitz in the South Bay is in Santa Clara at the corner of San Tomas/Montegue EXPWY and 101.

Re: Cicuit City Washing Sucks

I shop at Circuit City.

All I do is go online, find what I want, check the available inventory in 3 different stores in my area, and pick one store. I reserve the item online, and print out my reservation slip. I simply go to the customer service desk and pick up the item and pay for it. A simpler and better process than looking for someone to help you.

Re: Cicuit City Washing Sucks

Okay. I work at a furniture/RadioShack/cell phone/appliance combo store.

Right now, I only make $6 an hour. I expect it when coming in on the job. After awhile, I qualified to make commission. 2% on all merchandise, more on things like cell phone plans and furniture protection and the like. I do not make a killing, but I make a living, and guess what? I'm happy with my work. The second a customer comes in the door and is within my proximity, it's "Good day, is there something I can do for you?" and, there usually always is. Except on Saturdays. On Saturdays I get a lot of "No thanks, I'm just looking." in which case I can respond "...is there something in particular that you're looking for...? {by this time, they're already heading to a particular area of the store, and I can form a guess as to what it is they want, RadioShack stuff, furniture, appliance, cellphone, whatever, and can form my questioning to the like}.

I've never been pushy, and I've rarely had someone walk away without buying something. Sometimes I get an irate customer in the door, but if I can't handle the problem, the owner is on hand to do just that, and he's great at protecting the employees while catering to the customer... unless they're wanting the world on a platter.

I'm happy where I work, and my boss clued me in as to why. This isn't retail that most people have to put up with. Best Buy, for example, utilizes bait 'n switch to an absolutely evil degree. An item is advertised at below cost, to bring customers in. It's the job of the employee to try and sell the customer on the item that's the next higher up. Each employee is only allowed to sell two or so of the advertised item. If they sell more than what's allowed, they get fired. That's not cool. How can you have happy employees and, in turn, happy customers with a strategy like that?

No. Happy customers x Happy employees = profit, survival and happiness, which exceeds a few more dollars that would've been earned unethically.

Spirit was crushed; now is fading, But I want to help make things right.
Because I can see and I can feel, and you can see and you can feel

Or at least together we'll call it a night.

That's an excellent suggestion; frankly I don't know why I didn't think of it. bang I think I'll do just that tomorrow.

Donovan Osaya, you have a job which you enjoy; good for you. You are correct about what is important for the long term survival of a company, happy customers. Perhaps the lack of that is why Circuit City is having some financial problems.
I had just thought that since this store is in a fancy new building, right across the road from Best Buy that they might try harder. I guess not.

By the way folks, I did email Circuit City and here is the response I got:

"As one of the nation's leading specialty electronic retailers, we
attribute our success to a superior service commitment, and your
satisfaction is our goal.  Regrettably, like any enterprise, we fall
short of our intentions on occasion, and customer feedback helps us know
of shortcomings.  We thank you for taking the time to write your
experience and apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered.

Our store management is ultimately responsible for your satisfaction at
the point of sale.  We encourage you to seek out the members of our
management team when you are in our facilities and make observations
that are disquieting enough to discourage you from completing your
shopping visit.  There are Store Managers, Operations Managers as well
as Floor Managers on duty when our stores are open.  We strive for equal
treatment of our patrons and will accept nothing less from our
associates.

Your comments have been forwarded and will be reviewed with the store
management team to ensure that any shortcomings are appropriately
addressed.  The store management team will contact you regarding your
issue."

I guess I am sort of amazed that I got a response. But that last part sort of intrigues me; I wonder if I'll hear anything from the local management? roll

The last time I went to the local Circuit City I got yelled at for making the Macs do things other than get vandalized.

I don't shop there anymore. You can find much better prices on everything there online, even with shipping. If there's something I need RIGHT NOW, I'll go to Best Buy, but only because I have friends that work there.
