/nosy bastard

Less than 10 days, not a compound an exclusive gated community and no, I noticed the Airport going even when I was disconnected and asked to check the servoce providers cache for the week. To them it looked as if I wsa on those sites (because it registered my Airport's MAC address).

Just for reference, do you live in Pleasantville?

No, really.  Rules get broken.  It happens.  Some people turn safe search off on Google.  It happens.  Why, I bet there's even an affair going on somewhere in your neighborhood right now.  It's not uncommon.  And it's not worth it to find out.

Then again, Pediphiles (sp?), mass murderers, rapists, etc. thrive in "private" communities so you might want to worry.  Light a torch in your front yard and this masturbator will get the message.

For lack of a good emoticon, the above statement was merely a reflection of how funny I think this situation is.  I understand your concern, but I don't share it.

You know the perp has to be in range.  Why not just "shield" your Airport to try and get a physical location?  Put some foil on three sides of a box, put the Airport in it and when the perp logs on you at least have a direction to start walking in.  Or, wait until the perp logs on, then shield and see when the connection is dropped.  You have an Airport, so reduce the power to see how close they may be.  Does it happen late at night?  Any neighbors have their lights on?  During the work day?  Who's home?  Real paranoia spawns creativeness.  But, watch out.  You could find out there are more colors out there than just shades of gray.

You may feel differently if you had kids and lived next door to a pediphile.

For my own curiosity, does your community have an agreement about what kind of websites that can be accessed, and roughly speaking, what does that cover?

As in any location, illegal sites or activity, as deemed by the region in which you reside. We do not set standards in the community for what sites you visit but we are law abiding and if federal laws are broken then it is a matter for the police. Unfortunately the police do nothing without proper evidence, which we are trying to attain. We do not allow people with prior or current criminal records to purchase in the community, nor do we allow people who are convicted of a crime to continue to reside in the community. As the person has not been charged nor evidence found to charge them, there is little the community or the police can do. If the person commits the same or similar crime they will most likely be caught. BTW, it is also a crime to steal an internet signal for any purpose, whether the signal is protected or not.

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection

I think everyone is making more of this than there really is. I live in a normal community that is gated (which there are many of all over North America) and we have normal everyday neighbors and people of all races, religions and backgrounds. The cost to get into the community is high as the homes are almost never put up for sale and the seller and buyer have to be approved to have the transaction go through. It is the same in many, many higher end condo complexes. There are by-laws as there are in ANY neighborhood, they are just more strictly enforced. This isn't some crazy nazi commune or compound or any other weird place. For Christ sakes I own a Harley and have a beard and one arm completely tattooed. It's just a normal neighborhood that is gated and closed after a certain period of time. My mother-in-law lives in a senior's complex with the same principles and similar rules. Now the person in question BROKE THE smurfing LAW! He didn't break a 'rule'. He did something the police and possibly the federal government would get involved in if there is enough evidence. I wonder who here would be thrilled to have a pedophile move in next door. Some of you are extremely hypocritical, spouting off about smurf you know nothing about. You've pissed my off and you can all go smurf yourselves. Mods please close this thread.

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection

Unless you secure your connection is closed then anybody driving down your street with a wireless card in their laptop can grab bandwidth from an open connection. If you want a secure private network then it is your responsiblity to secure the connection.

Take some responsibility for your actions and stop with the victim roll it is annoying at best but most definitely boring. If you believe you have a case of the nature you do turn it over to the authorities and let them do the detective work since you obviosly aren't equiped for the task.

Also if you haven't secured you access point you are equally responsible so get a clue.

After reading this thread I understand why this great country of ours is going to hell.

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection

OK, from the top for you people who obviously confuse reading and skimming.
Let's get a few things out of the way first.
1. I NEVER EVER asked how to protect my wireless signal (please I double dare you to find where i asked that).
2. I DO NOT live in a compound
3. There is no access to our community from anywhere other than a gated entrance and it is absolutely impossible for someone other than a member of the community to have committed this offense.

The story goes like this. I live in a gated community (as previously stated, not unlike a retirement complex or upper class condo complex). One day after coming home I installed my Apple Security Update provided by Software Updater. At this time my Airport was and always had been WEP protected with a 128 bit encryption password. My Airport name was hidden and I have never had an issue prior to this. After installing the Apple security update my wireless connection was no longer available through any means. I tried to access it through several means (using Internet Connect and even through reformatting the Airport itself) but was unable to access it. When I was trying to get the connection up I tried leaving the security feature off and this seemed to work. Since I have several computers and it was late at night and this problem was beyond my computer solving problem, I left it off. I knew this was a violation of my by-laws within the community and decided to let the main office know ASAP. Now let's make this very clear, because some of you are obviously mentally challenged in some fashion, I live in the middle of a GATED community. There is NO traffic other than residence and there is at least an acre in any direction between me and ANY outside road so NO ONE could just drive up and got a wireless signal UNLESS they were a resident. CLEAR ENOUGH? During the time my wireless connection was open, at an hour that was past the time the gates would be open (which means they WERE CLOSED and there was NO ACCESS) I noticed, while my computer was off, that the modem light was going like crazy, as if someone was accessing the network. I called the service provider and asked if the connection was being used at this time and they said it was. I explained the situation to them and asked if they could log it for the next few minutes and I would then shut off the connection and it was to remain off until I called them. It was not turned on without the WEP and other security measures put into place again until it was asked of us by the police. I then called the community office and told them the story. They asked if I could get a print out of the log and when I did there were some suspicious sites that were visited. We immediately called the police who told us there was little they could do without finding out who it was. THEY suggested leaving the wireless connection open for a period and try to find the MAC address. Since the service provider was the same for everyone in the community (provided free of charge) and it was deemed criminal activity, they were legally bound to provide the information to us and could match the MAC address to the owner. After talking to the service provider they suggested the same but were unable to provide a way of getting the MAC address because all they show on their end is the wireless router MAC address (mine). I needed the one that was connecting to the router. SO, in good faith but not wanting to divulge too much information for security reasons, I came here for assistance. In return I was called a nazi, a communist and chastised for living in a community of law abiding citizen that is protected by something as evil and as unconstitutional as a GATE! I am accused of brining the fabric of "your great country" (which I am THANKFULLY not a part of) to it's knees by living in a situation that allows me be free of having criminals and pedophile as neighbors. Well allow me to retort. You people are smurfing clueless. It's always amazing to my how you go on and on about freedom but don't allow someone the freedom to live in a gated community. You are the same smurfed up freaks I see who stand outside and chant righteous slogans for the rights of pedophiles to see their children unsupervised and then turn around and chant new but equally annoying slogans when one wants to live next door to you. You make me smurfing ill. It's no small wonder I left "your great country" to live here. And to end this tiresome debate, I NEVER claimed to be a victim. I tried to catch someone breaking the law and WAS successful, thank you very much. I am no more the 'victim' than someone who fights back an intruder on their premises. I have said my piece, I am done with you and you can go to hell, although from the sounds of things, you're already there.

PS, there's a definite reason you're the most hated country in the world and it's not jealousy. It's you pompous, arrogant, holier than thou attitude.

Now, mods, if you have any balls, CLOSE THIS smurfing THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, the "compound" comment was just because I am an ass and thought it would get a reaction, and it gave me a giggle!

And if someone is surfing the kiddy porn, and you want to bust them by all means, go for it.

But you need a wireless router that keeps logs or some such . . .

PS, there's a definite reason you're the most hated country in the world and it's not jealousy. It's you pompous, arrogant, holier than thou attitude.

Where the hell did that come from?

1) Many computers are configured automatically connect to whatever wireless network is available, sometimes they do it out of order - he or she may not have know it was happening. I still haven't figured out the criteria my laptop uses.

2) If you want their MAC address, well, like I said before, check your DHCP routing table. If your router doesn't log it, you're SOL.

3) If it only happened once and that's it, well, now you know to always use WEP. End of story. Why be vindictive?

Since it is a closed community it is important that the person who did so is caught and dealt with and removed from the community it possible.

If people in your community, as you implied earlier, can be evicted from their home for using an unsecured wireless network (which is semi-legal, in the states anyway, because leaving it unsecured can imply consent) to access legal adult content, there is a serious uptightness problem. I'm not a big fan myself, but last I checked, porn was legal in Canada, even if *gasp* you live next door to a family!

If it was kiddie porn, have the guy hung by his entrails, by all means.

But you haven't told us anything other than that the sites were "questionable" and probably not family-oriented. Rather than being coy, then getting angry and writing long, semi-coherent posts, try calming down and giving us all the information. Then, if somebody here want to help you, they can, and if somebody thinks you're being puritanical nitwit (what with this being the internet and all, somebody probably will), they can say so and you can ignore them.

Chill Pill. Take two & call me in the morning.

From this...
"After reading this thread I understand why this great country of ours is going to hell." Posted generously by clean86. I don't belong to 'this great country' and resent the implication that I am the cause of its demise. clean86 has no one to blame but himself.

dvpierce wrote:

Not vindictive. Since it was brought to the police's attention and the attention of the governing body of the community I was bound by laws and rules to do whatever I could do catch the individual.

dvpierce wrote:

Such was the case. I could only say so much prior to seeking legal council.

dvpierce wrote:

I did not want to say too much until I had spoken with legal council. As this forum can be used in a court of law, it was not prudent to say too much and did not want to get into it. I just needed advice on getting a MAC address and it was never my intention to say anything about this. I was very clear at the beginning that I did not need advice on HOW to protect myself nor did I want to answer a bunch of questions. If someone stops and asks me for direction to some place I do not ask them why they want to go there and where they are coming from. I just give them directions.

dvpierce wrote:

OK, you're 'in the morning'

In retrospect I could have given more info sooner but stand by the fact that I gave the info I felt necessary to get a straight answer from an intelligent person. If curiousity, rudeness  and judgment had not gotten in the way, this would have been a matter of a simple 'do this' or 'you're SOL'. I would have settle for either. There were those who did so and with them there is no issue.Such is the case. I was unable to say so prior, due to legal demands.

This guy sure has a lot of time on his hands.  Anyone who lives in a "gated community" (ie, prison) deserves whatever happens to him.    A "regular joe" he is not.  Thank god he doesn't live in the US (we've got enough idiots here as it is).  That would have been one more vote for Bush.

Well excuuuuuuuuuuse me for being good enough at what I do and be wealthy enough to live in an exclusive community. I have a lot of time on my hands because I can work mostly from home and I work when I want and mostly where I want. BTW I don't think people in prison use Macs. Using PC's is part of the punishment. As far as the statement you made about ahving enough idiots, well stand and be counted my friend. I have spent many years living in US, in great cities such as were mentioned prior and have found most of them to be quite nice. But I'm damn glad to be home.

As a point of fact I personally think Bush is the devil.

You're are right in saying I'm no regular joe but I thought I could still communicate on a normal, intelligent level with people on the internet without wondering if who I am was interfering with the communication. Being far removed from the general population and surrounding myself with people who are all primarily 'industry' people I find myself at a loss as to how society has gotten to this point where because someone wants to bring a thief and a pedophile to justice via police and government means is somehow a nazi communist prisoner. I have to remember that some of you are wet-behind-the-ears little piss-ants who've never lived outside of mommy's home and have zero life experience. Some of you are just idiots.

Marc, as far as the email is concerned, I apologize, that was uncalled for. I was angry and took out some frustration on you. I also sent one to someone else in anger but cannot remember who. I apologize to you as well. Accept it or not, it makes no difference to me but understand it is meant honestly. I'm a 'nice fellow' when I'm not pissed off but anyone who knows me knows when I get mad I rarely am nice about it. It's something I'd like to improve on but if I did that I'd be so close to perfect it would scare even me. tongue

It is painfully obvious that normal communication on matters as simple as a router is impossible as I am too far removed from your 'regular joe' and most people don't have the capacity or life experience to understand where I've been, what I've done and what I've seen nor appreciate the fact that no matter where you live or how rich or popular or 'exclusive' you may be, you still have feelings, problems and make mistakes. I've found many, but not all, here to be judgmental, argumentative and petty. If this is a cross section of Americana today, I'll stay in.

But normally the thing being stolen is your net access, but since the ISP is a single one for the community, this guy wasn't even stealing that.  Technically he was stealing the watt or two of power to transmit the data.

Close this thread? Why would the moderators do that? They are probably getting as good a laugh out of this as the rest of us.

The only thing I agree with is if there is someone involved in Kiddie Porn around you then by all means they should be hung from the highest tree.

If you lived in this great country then you could turn your evidence over to the FBI and they could get the devious freak. Since you live in Canada well you're on your own.

If you were in the USA then the Moral Majority would be rallying behind you.

Hard to keep from laughing at you Joe. This is serious stuff but the level you have taken some of the comments to is quite amazing.

You didn't run to Canada because Bush was reelected did you?

Let me push a couple of more buttons and see what happens. twisted

Try not to take peoples comments so personally you may save yourself from stroking out at an early age.

Moral of the story protect you connection by WEP passwording it as soon as you turn it on.

I hope you catch the perv if they are involved with Child Porn there is enough trash on the planet already and nobody needs a freak living next store. Besides since an Airport connection is only good for 150 Feet then the freak is very very close so I would be really worried if I were you. cry
