Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection

Commit a crime and they lock you behind bars.  Make money and they lock you behind a gate.

Sorry to get your goat.

In the words of Benjamin Franklin, one of our great countries forefathers:

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

And Patrick Henry:

Good read.

BTW, one acre square would be about 208 ft. from where you are.  That would make it entirely possible for someone outside your community to acquire a signal.  And, even if that was not what you meant, you may be quite surprised how far your signal can travel through line of sight, especially after the gate is locked.

I agree, cut the smurf balls off (but let the authorities do the cutting).  The fact that you believe a gated community is safe instead of the marketing gimmick for which it truly is is what I find amusing.

We all have quirks that people will make fun of.  Big deal.  It's our differences that make life interesting, not what we have in common.  I lived in a "gated community" for ten years.  They called it the US Navy.  Sleep within 10 feet of 20 guys for 10 years and you can appreciate those differences.  There's the guy who farts, has stinky feet, doesn't shower, steps on your rack, bangs his rack at 2 in the morning, won't wash his sheets, gets drunk and pukes, gets drunk and won't shut up, the "preacher", the "sinner", ... you get the idea.  Big deal.  The criminals come and go with very little intervention on my part.  This person will fudge and get caught eventually whether you stress out over it or not.

Yeah, I have kids.  Three of them and my first and only wife of 15 years.  I am concerned immensely about their safety and welfare.  I can protect them more by sharing my concerns with them personally rather than eradicating it from their life.  What you do is your own option and I respect it as being yours.

I believe you've got some very helpful hints to help you achieve your goals, and some emotionally charged opinions to boot.  They're just opinions.  A reflection of our differences.  Life's certainly interesting.

Regular Joe - you know, I've answered your question twice to the best of my ability, I am a mod, (and although some of this bullsmurf is bording on flaming, it's not too bad, imo. (I could be disagreed with, however) and you can always PeMail the mod for this forum.

So, I probably missed this somewhere, but... what router do you have?

Go to the manufacturers website, download the latest manual/materials, figure out how to access the DHCP table, wait for it... when he gets online, check the table, find his MAC address, and give it to the manager of your little community.

Is it Kiddie Porn or is it "Barely Legal" stuff. Because the "barely" means it's not illegal.

And I, for one, wouldn't want to be in a community that kicked you out for looking at porn. Or stealing bandwidth.

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection

I'm just glad I live in a place where gated communities are neither needed nor wanted.  Last time I checked, there were only two gated communities in the entire state of Minnesota.

As for catching this person...

If you have an open wireless network and someone uses it even though you don't want them to, that's your own damn fault.  Secure your network or quit your complaining.

If this person was in fact looking at child porn (and you still haven't quite made that clear) then you can turn the matter over to police.  If they feel it is a worthy enough issue, they can set traps.  In the meantime, protect your children by keeping close watch over them and educating them against predators.

I hope I never live in a neighborhood where my neighbors try to set traps and spy on me.  This thread reminds me of too much of this case.

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection

Also if this person regularly looks at illegal sites, it would be trivial for the ISP to detect that and trace it back to the person doing it.  Unless the person only looks at naughty sites when he finds open wireless connections, presumably you could track him down.

However this thread is a great example of why I'll never live in a gated community.

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection

Well the day has ended and it has been an interesting one to say the least. Suffice it to say all's well that ends well.

To answer some comments I will state the following:
1. sparkn, good words and a good read. Some things to think about.

2.dvpierce, you did answer my questions but in the hustle and bustle I neglected to acknowledge that, so thank you.

3.Malkin et al (I chose you because you were the last to make this particular type of comment) try reading the thread before making comments like you did. If you had actually read the thread you would have realized the situation which made your comment either ignorant or completely obtuse. I trust you are neither. And by the way, I've been to Minnesota. The only reason you need gated communities there is to keep people in. lol

The battle has been fought and won, I shall return to my peaceful life where I have a beautiful wife, a wonderful kid, a nice car, a great home and a safe place to spend time with all. I've seen and done more than most of you can ever imagine and if you think living in a gated community is some kind of prison sentence than mores' the better. In your lack-luster and twisted imagination I'm sure you have constructed a world where I stay locked in my house in a locked up community, fearing the outside world. Nothing could be further from the truth. My life, for the most part, is as normal as anyone's in my position. I go out to movies, I enjoy golf, riding my motorbike, walking my kid to school, playing ball in the park or skating at the rink. I sometime get asked if I'm really "so and so" or asked for an autograph or asked questions but for the most part, since my limelight days are over, I have a normal life. It's just a hell of a lot nicer than most people's. I can't help that nor will I apologize for it. I don't regret my past choices, forcing me to live in a gated community so that my privacy is respected, rather than have morons coming to my door at all hours of the day, asking stupid questions. I do this for my kid so they will have a normal life and so they will grow up respecting people, not fearing and despising them. As long as I keep my kid off boards like this, all should be well. tongue

Well did you find any thing that will let you monitor the access without running a radius server or getting a new wireless router with logs?

Neither. The person was caught by police this afternoon. They only 17 and have a criminal record. It was a visitor and they were turned in by the visited. End of story.

I don't know. That's for the courts and the police to work out. They said they would 'throw the book at him'. I'm just glad it wasn't a permanent resident and that it's over, as far as I'm concerned. If it goes to court, I will need to testify but they may only use the evidence I've provided. At this time I'm not sure what they are doing and since this is going to be a sensitive case they are not saying much.

I did read the entire thing.  The reason this thread has been a problem for you is because you have either chosen to withhold key information throughout it, or you are simply incapable of articulating a clear point.  In the future, if you want more positive responses with helpful information, try keeping your ego and your judgmental side at bay.

I've been following this thread, lurking about, watching the firewroks and not really taking sides.

Until now.

I'll write it off as a n00b mistake, but BB courtesy dictates that you don't flood a thread like you just did. Please - kindly - edit your thread and remove most of those Maxes. Please?

If not, I suppose I might have to make the assumption you really are an a$$hole and make my case for all the 56K'ers out here in the MAF and petition the Mods to issue a time out for you.

shrug

I digress. Congrats on your victory in the war against evil and villany.

Phew!  That was a close one!  I hope you get subpoenaed and have to testify.  That would be great!  It would set a precedent for all those damn whippersnappers who mooch of the uprightly ilk with the moral rectitude of your gated community.  Lock him up and throw away the key I say!  Burn him at the stake!

I mean how can they argue with a person who says "it is also a crime to steal an internet signal for any purpose, whether the signal is protected or not."  Apparently you know the laws better than the courts, municipalities and even those within your gated community.  I mean, if you display the logic and intelligence displayed in this thread on the stand, there's no way that kid will ever see the light of day.  And by God, that's a damn good thing!

Please come back and continue posting more at MAF - it will seriously brighten my day!  lol

Sorry about bogging down the MAF'ers who have 56k modems. Since I have never had a 56k modem I would realize this would be the case. Nice edit by the way.

Well, that seems to be a statement leveled at everyone. Is it the fact I don't have a lot of money that apparently resigns me to a life a mediocrity?
