Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection
My only point is that you refused to clarify if the sites visited were actually illegal or just against your neighborhood regulations. I would have been more than willing to help catch a criminal. But I have no interest in helping catch some guy looking at porn. You certainly could have been a bit more helpful in that regard.

I could have been and most likely (damn you 20/20 hind-sight) should have been. I only felt at the time that I did not want to be too forthcoming with info due to legal reasons. I was wrong.

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection
how would that in any way have hindered your legal situation.
"i need help catching somone surfing child pornography," would have avoided three pages of this thread and recieved the help asked for. But your paranoid ambiguity that somehow your connection with this situation would harm your reputation prompted the flood of opinions and subsequent flame war.
People need to stop asking their lawyers advice for every single little action, especially when you very well knew you were doing nothing wrong. And if something had happened, you insinuated many times that you have enough money to pay for the legal service to fix it after the fact anyway

Ya. I've been all round this great big world and I've seen all kinds of girls, but I've never seen a "child porn site." That smurf just don't happen. Child porn is really only found on in the dark corners of usenet, not websites with names like kiddieporn.com or naked15yos.gov. The rest is all "barely legal" stuff which is really just horny code for of-age girls in short plaid skirts and knee socks. My biggest problem with this thread is that I have yet to hear proof of any illegal activity. I seems Regular Joe's whole basis for kicking this person out of his community is some sort of moral superiority.

OK, first off, I OWE no proof and cannot figure out how I would GIVE proof even if I did.
Secondly, I am not sure where you got the idea I have a problem with naked women. I am a MUSICIAN, in case you missed the smurfing memo. I've already stated I've done and seen things that would make a biker blush (probably kill you). And further more I have not become some born-again christian, just because I believe in God. I drink, I ride Harleys and look at women whenever I get a chance. I know the limits better now than I did and respect women for who they are and not what they can do for me but that came iwth age and reflection, not with some moral enlightenment. I'm always impressed by people's imaginations though.
I've already said I realize that I could have been more forthcoming with the info but it had nothing to do with who I am.

Man, this is classic. I'm coming down here in the middle-ground, but at least some of you must be able to see how hilarious this all is. I gotta say though, I'm pretty damn impressed with Regular Joe's ability to hold his own-by himself-against the lot of you. Congrats to you man, you seem very eloquent. Why the "Regular Joe" tag though? Don't seem too reg-u-lar to me.

(Please don't flame me for just putting up my two cents) I know I'm coming in late but the problem was solved-in whatever fashion the police deemed necessary. Can't we at least say that if the police were involved that whatever happened must be serious, and if it isn't then they won't be too hard on the kid?
Unless of course they were the LAPD and he was black and reaching for a cell phone...

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection
Hey, so did anyone ever bother to answer the question?
I have a situation similar to the originator of this thread in that I can't enable WEP (my fiancee's WinXP machine just can't handle it.) I'd like to block users based on their IP addy or some other way than by WEP.
Oh, yeah and ... FTP, hand peodophiles by their genetalia, compounds are best when inhaled, and SMURFS?! WTF?!
Whew.

Most decent routers will let you block everything but the machines you specify by MAC address. Not Mac, MAC. Even the PC will have one. If you've got 2 computers, you enter 2 MAC addresses and nobody else will be able to use it.

Untill they sniff it and clone your MAC addy.
2ELpH3 - WinXP should be able to handle WEP in its sleep. If not, first thing you should do is update the firmware on the router, the second is update the card's drivers, the third is double check your configuration. I'm serious - it really should be fairly easy to do - the router's documentation should have come with directions specifically for WinXP, since that's what most folks use.
If none of that works, buy your GF a mac - you'll probably get some nookie out of it.

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection
Oh my hell! This is hilarious! I almost p!ssed myself laughing so hard at this! The funny thing is.... I found this thread by googling "somebody else's wireless. . " to try to figure out how it is that I"m able to access a wireless network without having a wireless router! -- My new laptop was set up to access wirerless networking in our office building - I brought it home for the weekend expecting to have to plug my cable modem into it - and I found I'm able to get on the internet without plugging in a cable modem! - My laptop automatically searches out wireless networks - it found three - two of them are not secured? Am I "stealing" bandwidth or am I merely using what is being offered up freely by generous neighbors? I live in an (ungated but nice enough) neighborhood of older single family homes - The houses are about as far apart as any homes in a 35 year old neighborhood.
My real reason for coming to this site - was to find out if my pc is in danger of being hacked if I use this connection, if I should bother to buy my own wireless router, if I can actually access somebody elses pc over this wireless network ( trust me - I'm not nosey or dangerous - I really have no interest in accessing my neighbors pc's - when I house sit for them I never even peek in their underwear drawers!) My real reason for wondering if I can access their pc is because I"m concerned that somebody can access my pc. If I use this 'gift" to access my email - will the real subscriber be able to read my email?
I'm actually not looking for anybody's opinion of the right or wrong of my using this connection which I feel is being offered to me freely AND I have every intention of eventually buying my own wireless router - if that's what I need - I'm new at this but I thinnk it would be bad to get dependent on this connection- only to have the generous neighbor figure out how to password protect his router. Technically, is my use doing them any harm or is this more like pirating cable tv? I like to compare this connection to the part of my yard that gets watered by my neighbors sprinkler.
Joe - you must be very proud of having your neighbor's 17 year old visitor arrestsed. I suggest you start a campaign that gives all members of the community the right to approve or disaprove all future visitors -- maybe hold panel interviews to determine the worthiness of the visitor - that should cut back on the curious 17 year olds and maybe even a few poor relations with leaky cars that might ruin the asphalt! You better get outside right now - there might be somebody parking on the wrong side of the street or putting up an unauthorized lawn ornament! PS - I chose not to spell check - I thought you might have fun circling my miskeys!

And another thingI can't get over Joe, that you came to this site asking for help, and in spite of the obvious snobbery in your email, people tried to help you - and your response has been to insult the people, the culture, the country and the politics of those who tried to help you. Please email me your address so I can arrange to have one of your neighbor's dogs come poop on your front yard - that will give your life continued purpose. I'm guessing that your wife is every bit as beautiful as you say - which can only be explained by how rich you imply to be - and I'll bet she's grateful for every second you spend on the internet or chasing "bandwidth theives" or doing any thing else that keeps your pompous viagra taking - gold digging married ass off of her!

It would be illegal for you to use someone's wireless internet access without permission - it would be no different than jacking into their wires and accessing their internet connection that way.
If someone has unwittingly left their wireless connection open without any security, then it is likely that they also lack the tech savvy to protect their comp and left themselves vulnerable to attack. Likewise, if you are a n00b, then you might want to read up a bit about securing your comp (firewall in system prefs, to start) - it's not rocket science, and a little can help a lot.
In theory, using an unknown wireless connection can be risky to yourself. It is possible that the owner of the router could be logging data that flows through his connection - logins and passwords to whatever websites you might log into could be compromised.
Of course, this is a somewhat unlikely scenario, but so is credit card fraud, and that has happened to myself and several people I know.

Re: I want to know who's using my wireless connection
If you really want to try and find out who uses your wireless, then begin by installing nmap and X11. It will require you to install the X11 Developer Tools. And you'll want to learn about the different forms of network protocols. You'll also want to install a sniffer. There are two package installers for the OS X you can use pretty easy, Fink and DarwinPorts. Either one of them have the software for free and both packages have GUIs you can use with X11.
I imagine you're not really serious enough to learn what you'd need to get it done though, just from reading what you've written so far.
I believe I've given you enough to go on if you really want to see who is using your wireless network. If you learn how to use the packet sniffer to watch anyone using your network, you'll not only be able to see who's on your system, but what they're viewing. There might be a few. You wouldn't want to finger the wrong person as a pervert, without proof.
Depending on how big your community is discovering who the freeloaders are could be easier or harder. You might have to use triangulation to do it ultimately.

After reading, the saddest part of all this... When he couldn't secure his AP, he had to go and tell somebody and get the ok? That is almost sad, I am glad I don't have a gate around my community.
