While Apple says "Rip, Mix, Burn..."

M$ has been working on this.

$500 MILLION gone into researching this kind of garbage, completely ignoring the $5 workaround of plugging a $5 cable into your sound card.

I sure hope DRM leads to more people jumping the M$ ship.

Re: While Apple says "Rip, Mix, Burn..."

What amazes me is that these companies completely ignore, fair use. If I buy a CD and want to rip it to MP3 to play on my iPod, that is covered under fair use. Just becaues you make an MP3 does not equal breaking a law.

That makes me sick.

Since this is a software package as well as hardware, you can be sure that mac users will be left behind.

Oh well I hate copyprotection anyway, and I dont even copy.

This is really stupid.

You will never be able to effectively protect music from being copied as long as you have unrestricted output! If I can listen to it, I can copy it!  roll  lol

I do not condone pirating music but I do want to use the music I paid for on my iPod.

This is being discussed on the Ars Technica forums and someone came up with a great thought: This could do more to sell Macs than what Apple is currently doing.

Re: While Apple says "Rip, Mix, Burn..."

It could lead to more Mac sales and it probably will in the short run.  But if this sham actually takes off, it could also lead to Apple adopting the technology because there may be a lot of bad PR or even lawsuits about Macs being the machines of pirates.

Yeah, absolutely. I do think Apple is hoping to benefit from MS and Intel's anti-pirating efforts, but I don't think they'll be able to stay above the fray for very long.

everybody take 5 minutes out of their day to shoot a little note off to Apple.  We have power as consumers.  Companies stay in business because people (ie consumers) buy what they're selling, or they fail because people don't.  If you support Apple not using DRM let them know. It really does mean a lot.  Here's my letter:

To whom it may concern,
As an Apple product owner I just wanted to state my absolute support and appreciation for Apple's refusal to implement anything relating to DRM (digital rights management) into it's operating systems or products.  We, as consumers, have the right to do what we wish with products, materials, and content we legally purchase as long as our actions are within the law.  Making a mix CD from songs I legally own on CD's i've purchased is my right as well as backing up software.  I wanted Apple to know that I, and other Apple owners, FULLY support Apple's ethics and decisions. Please do not let us down.

Sincerest Thanks,

As a comsumer, I personally buy 20-30 CD's a year, MANY of them because I heard MP3's first.

If they implement this, I won't buy ANY. So there roll

Does  iTunes have a "record what you hear" option??

Software bundled with SoundBlaster cards give that option, there are 3rd party apps that will record 'what you hear' and encode on the fly as well. It means 'ripping' a CD at 1x, but that won't matter to the person downloading it off Kazaa.

MS might have come up with the technology, but IMO it's going to be the $20.00 CD itself that will piss people off more than anything... and the RIAA will still be the bigger A-hole.

But.. if MS takes a big PR hit on this, I see Linux as the short term winner with Apple being the 'upgrade' choice.

People PO'd at MS who have invested a few 1000 in PC gear probably won't be willing to ditch it all and spend more $$ on a like equiped Apple when Linux is free, or at least very cheap. But in a year or 2 if they're still mad, when it comes time to upgrade they can go Apple, still run Linux if they want, and flip MS the bird (or buy new PC gear and still run Linux)

If it sends more people to Linux / Apple.. all the better, more competition means better prices.

No. It's a shame, but iTuness OS 9  predecessor, SoundJam, did this. It recorded any audio-in straight to MP3.

In OSX, your best bet is Audion or AudioCorder X.

But basically, as someone already mentioned, if you can hear it, you can record it.
Short of the RIAA and Microsoft's DRM plugging our ears and only unplugging them at approved times, this is simply going to be a major annoyance to the end-user.

<snip>

I guess that depends on whether or not this protection requires hardware.  If it's a hardware thing it might be trickier, there aren't many linux boxes available in retail.  Maybe that will increase, I don't know.

Re: While Apple says "Rip, Mix, Burn..."

That is really what I don't understand about these schemes. The hardcore  music downloaders will find a way to rip these CDs, wether by cracking them or by using an audio in. The casual user, which is the majority of users, is the one who is inconvenienced. All they are really doing is wasting time and money to stop people from copying cds, who wouldn't be copying them in the first place. Or if they are copying them it is likely a fair use case.

I seriously doubt people are buying less because they can download them. Here is a clue, people like to spend money. They want the CD case and the pretty art work. They want the newest N'Sync CD, so they can say they have it, but they also don't want to feel like they are taking it in the ass.

When is the RIAA/MPAA going to wake up and realize that they can't stop something that isn't going on? Instead of cowering under their covers at night, afraid they are going to lose their 4 million dollar homes, they should be looking at ways to profit from the internet. They have all the content, and all the money to make the service. So all they have to do is stop pissing themselves long enough to make it.

If people could mix and match songs and download them for like 50 cents a piece with no restrictions, I think people would do it. There is no way I would shell out $20 for a CD that has maybe 2 goods songs on it. But these services they have set up for themselves are completely stupid. "You can download this many songs, but then you can only listen to them on one computer and not burn them to a CD". Then they want to blame everything on "Piracy". If file sharing services disappeared today, I seriously doubt it would change their position. The internet is here and people want to use it.

Why not chalk it up to free promotion and move on to finding a new business model? Damn those people are disgusting.

The silly thing is that Microsoft is spending all these millions of dollars on copy protection technology that will be cracked within weeks by a handful of high school computer lab kids. Another example of Microsoft's culture of "if we throw enough money at a problem, we can declare our fix a 'standard' and charge through the eyes for it".  roll

It makes me very happy to know that major label executives are shaking in their hand tooled Italian loafers, and I'm looking forward to the collapse of the music industry.  Imagine... a future without mass marketed, quick profit, manufactured musical "product".  It's particularly satisfying to see people being punished for the sins of hubris and bad taste simultaneously.

Re: While Apple says "Rip, Mix, Burn..."

This is GROSS. DISGUISTING!!!

Paladium...yuck! I can see the use of putting user controls on stuff like medical records and billing information, but not music or video!!! Whatever happened to fair use?

I don't buy a whole lot of CDs any more, mostly because I don't enjoy pay $18 PER CD!!!

I REFUSE to pay more than $10 per NEW CD, even less for used. Likewise I refuse to pay more than $15 for a new DVD or $10 for a used one. I'm look for deals. I also mostly buy local bands on smaller labels, as well as electronic music, a lot of which are not on the big US labels.

This DRM stuff is non-sense! Like everyone said, its not helping anything!
