Re: While Apple says "Rip, Mix, Burn..."
This is so ridiculous. I can't believe Microsoft thinks people will buy into this sh*t. No monopoly could survive something like this and Palladium, it's suicide.

On a side note, my theory is that when the whole Napster thing started they needed to pretend to take a stand so that people wouldn't think it's "ok" to do this sort of thing. Only they got caught up in there own game and before you know it they've wasted 500 million on a plot to kill themselves.

Re: While Apple says "Rip, Mix, Burn..."
This makes no sense... let me see if I've got this straight. Microsoft is working on this DRM stuff, which will make it impossible to copy from one audio CD to a blank CD. Theoretically this will also make "ripping" audio from CDs more complicated. Is Microsoft hoping to eliminate all digital audio formats? How will this effect MP3 player owners?
My other source of confusion in this is the new OS "Palladium." Can someone explain what this means to the common computer user? What sort of protection features will Palladium have? What would it be capeble of protecting?

Palladium is not an operating system.
Its a set of hardware/software components that work together to provide a secure platform for software.
Essentially what you'll have is a public/private key pair embedded in a chip on your motherboard. The Palladium hardware offers access to the embedded key pairs and has a FIPS 140 random number generator on-chip also.
The Palladium components work with the FIPS 140 and your key pairs to authenticate software that is running on the system. To make a long story short it will be able to control what kind of software can be run within the system. Software that is Palladium based can be authenticated locally on the system or remotely via a server.
For a consumer Palladium probably won't mean much at all. It will more than likely be hardware that has minimal use. There will probably be some OS integration that a normal consumer will find useful like filesystems that allow you to encrypt data using the embedded key pairs.
On a corporate level Palladium may well see a lot of use. It will allow a corporation to more tightly control their LAN/WAN enviroments and could be very useful for VPN connections and other enterprise needs.
No Palladium will not mean that someone else controls your personal computer. You'll hear plenty of people make crazy claims about it. Just realize that most of the people making those claims have no clue what it is either.

Re: While Apple says "Rip, Mix, Burn..."
more competition means better prices.
WRONG! That's exactly what hasn't happened. Record companies are competing against MP3s... have they lowered their prices? No! They've raised them! The RIAA is just doing everything backwards.
Soon a DVD will be cheaper than a CD.

In many cases that is already true.
