Smilie abuse
I don't know this is possible or not, but it seems like it might be feasible.
I've noticed on occassion, a user gets a little over emotional and presses a smilie button, oh, say, 600 times in a row. Sometimes the emotional user will then select all, copy, and paste another couple dozen times.
It's annoying, excessive, and well, droll. So, my point. Is it possible to parse a post so that any instance of :blah: :blah: :blah: :blah: :blah: becomes simply :blah:? The trick will then be to catch instances of :blah: :slappy: :blah: :slappy:
Again, I don't know if it's an easy thing or a huge pain in the butt. Just thought I'd throw it out there. I don't mind excessive use of smilies, but I thought if it's an easy fix it might be worthwhile.

Re: Smilie abuse
Something like the 8 smilie max limit that UBB provided? I dunno but I agree. Hey Goo!
That's Gooey (the official pronunciation of GUI), and it should be an option in the profile if you do that. Some people like looking at other people's smilie art!

Re: Smilie abuse
I'd be more inclined to a smilie limit rather than your suggested method, registered_user, but that's only because I think it would be a pain in the ass to implement, and it could easily be cirumvented. I mean when do you stop with the repeats. If we set it to catch :blah: :slappy: :blah: :slappy: you could just make it repeat in threes. And we could catch threes, but when would it stop? But I think if there were to be a smilie limit it should be a bit more than 8. Maybe 15?
Hard work may not kill you, but why take chances?

Re: Smilie abuse
Goo = Gooey shortened.
And if we wanted to get really fancy and implement it in the display preferences we could even allow each user to choose their own smilie limit.. Hmm.. But it might be more efficient to just check for the smilies upon submital instead of checking each time its displayed.. Hmm...

Re: Smilie abuse
I thought it might be a pain to code when it comes to loops and different possible combinations. But a limit would be pretty cool. 8 is probably fine, but 15 would work too. The only people that will even notice are the people that get over-emotional.

Re: Smilie abuse
I think an 8 smilie limit would be better than 15 (I mean, come on, who really needs 15 smilies), but any kind of limit would be an improvment.

the only one I likes was a little rendition of the Pope, and I thought it was funny

Re: Smilie abuse
Oh come on! It's not like they take that long to download or can mess up the layout. I've only seen (and done. heh heh.) an abuse of the smilies one or two times. If there really is a gross abuse then a mod can just edit the post. I think it's more likely that you'd have a very long and inciteful post that needed more than eight smilies than any real serious abuse of the smilies would occur.

We shouldn't expect the mods to edit posts every time their is an abuse of smilies, that just creates a lot more extra work for them. The individual mods doing something should be a last resort. If there was just a limit on it, there would never be a problem.

I used to feel that way, and I argued in favor allowing unlimited smilies. But after some thought, I can't think of any legitimate reason why you'd need that many smilies in one post. It's uninspired artisitically, the joke's been done already so it isn't funny, and if they happen to all be animated, it's just creepy.

Re: Smilie abuse
how 'bout a mod to allow us to select whether smilies show up? If they don't we'd just see the tags like :blah: or : )
then there's the problem with the img tag to get around it but I guess it goes back to trusting the forum users to be responsible...

Re: Smilie abuse
Hmm I remember saying this a while back and everyone was just "meh"
I was one of the people who was just meh. I've had a change of heart. I'm not asking that they bend over backwards tweaking lines and lines of php, I was just saying that it might be a good idea if it is something that is quick and easy.
In other words, on a 10 scale, I'd rate it at about 2 in priority.
Hey, I think all threads in Forum Suggestions should be a poll from 1-10 so users can vote on how big the issue is. OK, I rate that suggestion at around 1.

Re: Smilie abuse
dont limit the smilies... theres really no point because you could easily just use the img tags to add more smilies to your post.... and it dosnt take any more time to download 20 smilies than it takes to download 2... if they are all the same image, it gets downloaded once.. after that its in your cache... if you're going to limit it, make the limit like 30 or something.... otherwise with the embedded quotes, if the person you are quoting has 6 smilies in their post and the limit is 8, then you can only put 2 in

That's a good point. Would quoted smilies work towards an imposed limit? That wouldn't be good.

Re: Smilie abuse
This is starting to sound like more work then it's worth. If it would be rather easy to add a smiley limit to the display preferences (italics to emphasize the needed optional-ness of it) do it, otherwise don't bother.

Re: Smilie abuse
Now tell me, what was the point of doing that? You seem like the kind of person who wouldn't want a smilie limit, but doing stuff like that is what would make the admins impose one.
