E-mail Screensaver

This is not really a new idea but...

Wouldn't it be cool if someone created a screensaver that could check for new messages and then display some sort of message like "You have new mail!" and display how many new messages are waiting.

Has anyone seen something like this?

No but it would rule.

Doesnt MacMail have the little auto-check feature like Outlook Express and Entourage (the crappiest mail prog ever)

Re: E-mail Screensaver

Most email apps will check for email at a user specified interval, typically 5-10 minutes default.  The only screensaver I know about that displays messages on screen is AfterDark, and that died years ago.  But I hear it's making a come back to OS X.  It would display scrolling text saying you have mail, or the Finder wants you or whatever.

the Finder wants you

Will it decipher email messages and tell me if the girl writing me, wants me?

Isn't After Dark the flying toasters one?  If so, that one's already out (the flying toasters bit anyways) but you need to pay for it sad

That's the one!  I heard talk about it coming back, but I didn't know it was out yet.  Cool!  Although, I'm not sure it is as feature rich as the original.  From what I just read, it looks like it's just a bunch of modules ofr X's built in screensaver.  So I'm not sure if it will display text when you get mail.

But, it's shareware, so try it out!

Re: E-mail Screensaver

you'd think APple would have made a screen saver that checks for mail and just does what the Mail icon does, only bigger, or you'd think AOL would have done it...

Re: E-mail Screensaver

Go for it, I mean there has to be something that Mail checks to alter it's icon, right?  so if you can find that...  and maybe use your own pictures....  It'd be sweet...

Re: E-mail Screensaver

Half way addicted to MAF? Is 1000 the sign of a junkie? tongue  I think I'm good, I've spread those 500 doses over like 5 or 6 (or more?) years.  I got my monkey under control!

Yeah, having user definable pictures wouldn't be hard.  The easiest way to rig up this screen saver would be to have a folder somewhere with "themes," each theme folder having two images- empty mailbox and full mailbox.  Regardless of the images used, it'd use a simple, blocky font to show how many new messages you have.

Depending on other factors, you could use this framework to make a SS that showed how many new, unread messages in certain MAF forums/threads were waiting for consumption. smile

Re: E-mail Screensaver

No entirely related, but I was trying to use applescript to figure out how many new messages there were in Mail and then have it announce it, but I couldn't even find the stuff in the dictionary referncing the "new mail"  anyone know?

I was thinking once we figure that out, we are halfway there?
