I guess my other response would be that this is a relatively new technology, and we haven't seen a major Powerbook upgrade in a while.  We'll see what happens with the next major update.

i dont recall saying they are superior, infact i think i said "stupid pc's that cost more than a 12"pb."  keep in mind ive always been a mac user and most likely always will be.

im simply annoyed that apple isnt using something like this when alot of other companies are.
i for one, want one of these screens in a powerbook.

I was at Best Buy playing around with those laptops. The colors are nice and bright, but I would lose it if I owned one of the XBrite displays. They reflect the overhead lights like crazy. I was constantly moving my head and the screen just to read certain portions.

I love my powerbook screen, nicer than any screen I have seen on any other laptop

I've never seen an xbrite screen, but I've sat my PowerBook next to other laptops and desktop LCD screens and it's a  really good screen.

Another issue may be power consumption.  Steve likes his batteries to last and last without making the battery bigger than the rest of the machine.  Those nice bright screen may use more power than the Apple LCD and Steve doesn't want to cut the battery life, or make bigger heavier batteries.

The secret is a film applied to the screen itself. And, if you want this shiny finish on your powerbook, there's a solution out there for you. I just found out about this a few months ago, myself.

There's a company called ScreenTek that sells just the LCD itself - a device on the order of a few milimeters thick. They also apply a these films to get the Xbrite finish.

There is the caveat, of course, that they reflect things moreso that a normal LCD. However, the upside is that black is blacker, and white is whiter, there's a wider viewing angle, and you'll be able to see your screen much better outdoors.

So, it's not a drain on battery power at all; it's merely a layer of film on the screen itself.

But, back to how to get it: mainly, you have to either send in your LCD or laptop and have them apply the film ($100 + shipping), or buy a new normal LCD and they'll apply the film to it ($50 + screen price). Those're your main options.

That is, until Apple does some upgrading itself ...

I'd like someone to give me a laptop with a screen I can read when sat outside on a sunny day. Oh, now wait a minute... sunshine in Britain has been cancelled due to budget cuts, and shall not be restored until mid-2006. Scratch that.

On second thoughts, I shall rephrase. I'd like someone to give me a laptop. Thanks.

Have you considered a career outside the bounds of the law?  I hear Australia's nice, if you don't mind Australians.
