notebook screens
why the hell isnt apple using the new 'xbrite' glossy vivvid colour lcd's in its powerbooks?
seriously....they make any other lcd look like a cheap piece of crap.
they are so vivvid and beautiful.
toshibas and sony and fujitsu and a hell of alot of other computer companies are using something simmilar to this now, when is apple gunna get on board?
sometimes being a mac freak pisses me off when i see a cool technology that steve jobs doesnt embrace.
i want an ultraportable with a 10-12inch widescreen 'xbright' like display.
i have a choice of stupid pc's that cost more than a 12"pb.
comeon apple, argh.

Why the hell aren't you using a spell checker or the shift key?
But, to answer your question, you are free to purchase any products you want. If the other notebooks are so superior, go buy one. Simple.

This poster has a good point. I, too, would like one of those LCDs.

I guess my other response would be that this is a relatively new technology, and we haven't seen a major Powerbook upgrade in a while. We'll see what happens with the next major update.

Yeah, Synic. If there's onething Steve Jobs likes to brag about, it's Apple's LCD displays.

i dont recall saying they are superior, infact i think i said "stupid pc's that cost more than a 12"pb." keep in mind ive always been a mac user and most likely always will be.
im simply annoyed that apple isnt using something like this when alot of other companies are.
i for one, want one of these screens in a powerbook.

Re: notebook screens
I was at Best Buy playing around with those laptops. The colors are nice and bright, but I would lose it if I owned one of the XBrite displays. They reflect the overhead lights like crazy. I was constantly moving my head and the screen just to read certain portions.

Re: notebook screens
If the monitors you are referring to are those with a mirror-like finish I hope Apple never uses them. I keep seeing them on Vaios and they look like cheap crap, with way too much reflection that makes using them painful.

Re: notebook screens
I've never seen an xbrite screen, but I've sat my PowerBook next to other laptops and desktop LCD screens and it's a really good screen.

i saw a sager notebook the other day with some kind of protective clear hard shiny plastic over the LCD... it was sweet. so much easier on the eyes, and you could poke the screen with your finger and not cause the LCDs to blur.

But that's so much fun to do to the monitors at work.

Re: notebook screens
I'm mixed on those things. They are really bright and the viewing angle is far improved over previous LCD screens, but whatever it is giving it that mirror-like top coat makes for bad glare. Plus they're expensive, but I've only looked at the prices of VAIOs with them, and VAIOs are expensive anyway.

Re: notebook screens
Another issue may be power consumption. Steve likes his batteries to last and last without making the battery bigger than the rest of the machine. Those nice bright screen may use more power than the Apple LCD and Steve doesn't want to cut the battery life, or make bigger heavier batteries.
Food for thought anyway.

Re: notebook screens
actually they use less power, and only one lamp in alot of them.
its like a crt in flat form, i adore them.
i still stick by my post, i want one in a powerbook.
some are more reflective than others, i dont want it to be mirror finished, but a little shine is fine, unless you have the screen tilted back to a point where the lights will reflect off of it, i really dont see the issue.
it is far easier on the eyes than conventional lcd displays in my opinion.
regular notebook displays just have no hope in hell next to some of these.

Re: notebook screens
The secret is a film applied to the screen itself. And, if you want this shiny finish on your powerbook, there's a solution out there for you. I just found out about this a few months ago, myself.
There's a company called ScreenTek that sells just the LCD itself - a device on the order of a few milimeters thick. They also apply a these films to get the Xbrite finish.
More info, here: PixelBright LCDs
There is the caveat, of course, that they reflect things moreso that a normal LCD. However, the upside is that black is blacker, and white is whiter, there's a wider viewing angle, and you'll be able to see your screen much better outdoors.
So, it's not a drain on battery power at all; it's merely a layer of film on the screen itself.
But, back to how to get it: mainly, you have to either send in your LCD or laptop and have them apply the film ($100 + shipping), or buy a new normal LCD and they'll apply the film to it ($50 + screen price). Those're your main options.
That is, until Apple does some upgrading itself ...

Um.. $545 for my PB isn't exactly $100.

Yeah, they look neat at first, but they reflect way too much.

I'd settle for an apostrophe betwixt an "I" and an "m."
Those screens look fine when you're right in front of them and you're not below fluorescent lights, but I hear a lot of whining from my fellow law schooligans that have these screens. They just can't seem to find an angle that doesn't reflect the lights from somewhere in the room. I ne'er have that problem with my PowerBook.

Re: notebook screens
I'd like someone to give me a laptop with a screen I can read when sat outside on a sunny day. Oh, now wait a minute... sunshine in Britain has been cancelled due to budget cuts, and shall not be restored until mid-2006. Scratch that.
On second thoughts, I shall rephrase. I'd like someone to give me a laptop. Thanks.
