Indispensable MacOS X Software - a list
Hi there...
New macusers often find it a little bit difficult figuring out which applications are hot and which are not on the Mac OS X platform. I

I would add Panther Cache Cleaner to the maintenance apps section.
It does all the usual maintenance routines from a very nice interface as well as some interface tweaking from the "special" menu.

Under Games, I would add Semicolon Software's "Solitaire Till Dawn". It's $25 and is the best solitaire suite out there. With over 80 games and a buttload of features, it's a definite must have for the procrastinator in all of us...

Re: Indispensable MacOS X Software - a list
You mentioned SubEthaEdit, Smultron, and Taco HTML Edit, but not TextWrangler.
It has most of BBEdit's (non HTML or CLI) power for free! Yeah! Free!
What, Unison isn't under News readers? It won an Apple Design Award!
Witch should be in there right under QuickSilver. It's like command-tab for window switching. It's a beta right now, but it's stable, quick, and free.

Re: Indispensable MacOS X Software - a list
I would add-
NeoOffice-Open Office.org without X11 hell.
http://www.neooffice.org/
No list of Mac software can go without GraphicConverter.
http://www.lemkesoft.de/en/index.htm
A small quible:
I am becoming irked that RSS feed readers are being called news readers. News readers are what usenet client software is, ya know..software that reads newsgroups.
All you n00b RSS guys go find another name, us usenet people have been using newsreaders for 15+years.
In this catigory would be Thoth (the best but discontinued), Unison (brand new and unspeakibly wretched), MT Newswatcher (solid, boring but reliable) and Hogwasher (Ive never used it so who knows?).

Re: Indispensable MacOS X Software - a list
Applejack is a damn handy maintenance/repair utility to have installed. It doesn't do all the stuff DiskWarrior or TechTool can but it can still get you out of a jam.
Nisus Writer Express is a pretty nice word processor from the people who brought us Nisus 3.47, the word processor MicroSoft has almost caught up to.
If you like cooking then Yum is a pretty slick recipe managment app.
Yuburner and BurnX Free are a couple of decent free CD burning apps. Missing Media Burner is another, though the Terminal geek factor may turn some people off. It does work very well, though.
For contextual menus, On My Command is the ultimate. If you are willing to do a little work you can create contextual menu items to do almost anything you want.
Locator is a darn handy disk searching utility. It is a GUI for the CLI tool locate so it will find stuff the Finder ignores.
XKeys is a simple launcher utility.
Celestia is a free astronomy app that is kind of fun. Others include EarthGlobe, MoonDock, SolScape, and CosmicDebris. A very nice shareware choice is Equinox
Unicode Font Info is a handy tool for finding oddball characters.
If you have a scanner without OS X support then VueScan and/or the OS X port of SANE are very handy.
For printing, Gimp-Print may let you use printers without official OS X support or enable features not exposed by OEM drivers.
Only really useful to medical professionals but interesting nonetheless, OsiriX is kinda fun, if you like bones and organs and such.
Boaters may find Mr.Tides useful.

Re: Indispensable MacOS X Software - a list
You have Onyx on your list, but I would also include the shareware Cocktail, it is similar to Onyx but more convenient to use and a growing list of features. I don't see how you could have left out the freeware TinkerTool, there is nothing that matches it for fine tuning the interface. Its shareware sibling TinkerTool System has some system tuning features you won't find anywhere else this side of the command line. For changing ownership and permissions BatCHMod is hard to beat and works better than Finder at drilling down through multiple layers of folders. Since you mentioned DiskWarrior you should also include TechTool Pro 4, it does the same things as DW and a whole lot more besides including providing early warning of problems and file/volume recovery tools. The freeware application WhatSize is invaluable in finding out where your disk space has mysteriously disappeared to. If you want a bootable OS X CD then BootCD is about your only option. And another vote for Nisus Writer Express 2 a truly great word processor. While on the subject of word processors Apple's new Pages, part of iWork '05 has the potential of becoming a killer word processor.

Thanks for all the excellent links. While I knew about a few of the programs, there were some useful ones that I was not aware of. Thanks so much

You should add Quinn to your games section (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10063)
It's a freeware Tetris clone, and it's one of the best I've found thus far.

Re: Indispensable MacOS X Software - a list
As a new user (switched to MAC a couple of months ago) I need some help with the ONYX tool:
I run MAC OS 10.3.4 on a 15" powerbook.
I downloaded ONYX, but it is asking for a BSD subsystem to be installed? Where do I find this, I cannot seem to find it on my CD 1?
Onyx will not install correctly without it. I have tried?
Your help would really be appreciated.

I second this. You probably want to add OmniOutliner, a multi column outliner.

Nope, only 2 disks, and the closest I could find is BSDSK packages, but that is on my HD. I cannot browse the No. 1 installlation disk., Disk 2 only contains some .pdf files in diff. languages..
Forget it, I think I shall just get the other otion, cocktail...
Thanks for response anyway...

If you choose not to install the BSD Subsystem in a custom installation of Mac OS X, you cannot (among other things) share files via File Transfer Protocol (FTP), share your Internet connection via Internet Sharing, use Secure Shell (SSH) or Telnet, or locate services via Rendezvous. Since a lot of Mac OS X programs depend on this system you should definitely install it.
You need to reinstall Mac OS X and make sure the BSD Subsystem is selected in the Custom Install pane of the Installer. (Reinstalling Mac OS X does not affect your settings.)
If you have installed a new version of system software, and used the Archive & Install feature, some applications may need to be reinstalled to work correctly.

Re: Indispensable MacOS X Software - a list
This is great, thanks!! I'm new to Mac in general and this thread is a great help! I've got a question, though-I've never really messed with partitions too much, other than on installs, and I've got OSX on a 8GB partition w/ 9.2 on the rest of a 20g hdd. The OSX partition is about half full now, mostly with songs in iTunes. Looking at all these apps., I don't see how they will all fit on the OSX partition. Do I just add another partition and install the apps. on that? How do I get all the software I want and run it in OSX?

Folding at Home. Folding is a program to analyze chemical proteins in the battles against Alzheimers, diabetes, many kinds of cancer and Parkinson's. I use the dockless version of Folding with a configuration designed by Team MacAddict.
