i'm sorry, i don't classify grammar trolls as intelligent.  just fascist.

if you have a question, ask it.

otherwise, you stated "the natural resource" - i EXPLAINED the natural resource as a product of the aggregate of individuals rights - or freedoms.

in other words, people have the right - the freedom - to breathe the resource that is air without suffering from the others persons right - the freedom - to smoke.

its the basic doctrine of lockean natural rights.  ones individual rights must not suffer due to anothers.

otherwise, look up mancur olsen and collective action theory.

I'm still not entirely sure of what you're getting at.  But air, as a natural resource isn't a product of any human activity.  But one person destroying the resource for others is wrong and contradictory to a progressive society.

I hope that answers your question.

Re: Why has Rhode Island forsaken me?

its not my question, i was responding to the fact that you "wanted insight."

the point is, air, like a private business, occurs in the public sphere.  smoke at home - but you have no right to force others into a choice about the air quality in a public environment.

equal access.  smokers loose.  i like the "smokers patio,"  separate ventilated rooms, or some establishments for smokers only.

but since you've addled this thread with half-assed satire... its hard to say much of anything.

Ummm yeah, great.

Can I get an email notice when you start making rational arguments again?

What?  You can compare tobacco to alcohol, and you can flatly assume that I've got a list of other things on my ready to ban list, but I can't compare one banned substance to another?  And I'm the one not making a rational argument?

OK.

But you seem to be discriminatory in who you assign blame here... we are all "destroying the resource" with automobile emissions, but that doesn't seem to rise high in your list, but cigarette smoking does? Most would rather put their lips on a cigarette rather than a muffler, so I see a subtle difference...

What I am getting at, registered_user, is that while I conceed that cigarette smoke may be offensive, doing it in ones own home is sorta private wouldn't you agree? And if you so criticize cigarette smoke and wish cigarettes banned, I hope you ride a horse to work rather than a car...

Smoking crack cocaine isn't legal at home either, and I don't feel as though that is hypocritical.

Automobiles are being regulated to be cleaner.  Congress has set forth "green" standards for cars to follow, and the auto industry is responding.  Ideally I agree that such emissions should be eliminated, and I think it's safe to say that we hope that someday they will.  Rome wasn't built in a day, and auto exhaust won't be banned overnight.  But it's being addressed, so you'll just have to be patient as we watch autoexhaust vanish.

OK.

Comparing the private use of alcohol to the private use of tobacco makes much more sense than comparing either to asbestos!
