Cancelled TV shows

Allow me a brief trekkie tangent while I segue into a larger rant:

A human isolationist leader threatens to destroy Starfleet Command unless all aliens leave Earth immediately.

The above is the tagline for the last episode ever of Star Trek: Enterprise.

smurf. You know they can't pull that smurf on us. Cancelling a TV series before the writers and producers are finished with the story but after they've missed the chance to change what's in production and bring a series to a decent close... that smurf should be illegal. it's not just star trek, but a lot of the shows I've seen that got cancelled early just kind of went "blip" and then they wer-

yeah, just like that. Why do these smurfing TV people do this to us? (I know - money.) Aaaaack, pbbbt!

I'm sorry, I just have a real problem with cliffhangers...

Re: Cancelled TV shows

Yep, it's all about money.  I mean, these TV people may seem insane to us, but they have numbers that back all of this up.  That's why I find the whole "save Enterprise" effort a little amusing.  I mean, the people who are signing petitions are already watching the show.  Why should UPN care if these people sign a petition - it's not going to increase the ratings for the show.  And you can claim you'll boycott UPN, but do Enterprise fans really watch any of the other UPN drivel?

Re: Cancelled TV shows

Cynic, actually public outcry saved a doomed show once. I was just reading about it. The show went on for another 5 or 6 seasons because the studio rethought their position. Damn, i wish i could remember what show it was.

Re: Cancelled TV shows

The Japanese at least got something right when it comes to Anime.

Planned out stories within a particular amount of time. Evangelion was supposed to last for 52 episodes, 1/4 the way through it's first season, it faltered, so the writers had to make adjustments and prepare for it to last only 26 episodes. Their latter show, FLCL, was planned to last for only 6 episodes. No more, no less.

Re: Cancelled TV shows

Roswell was saved because of people sending tabasco sauce to the WB. It went on for a few more seasons after that.

Most of the really interesting shows do get cancelled, except for on HBO.

Im keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that Fox puts an end to that tedious, soap-opraesque Battlestar Galactica.
Such a cool concept, such a poor execution.

I completely agree. This is insane having this haphazard method keeping shows running too long or not long enough.

PS: Andromeda had a longer run than Enterprise.

Cowboy BeBop handled this in a similar way, but I think it was probably planned at 26 from the start. I especially love the ending of the series. The only way to continue the story from then would be from an extreme bastardization, something only an American company would think of doing.

Re: Cancelled TV shows

What the hell happened with Titus? I liked that show!

But I bet you if the great reviews didn't pour in for Arrested Development when it debuted on Fox, it would have been canceled on the spot.

Cartoon Network was rumored to order more episodes.

Here's my idea for that, however. The Cowboy Bebop world is so expansive that you could take the secondary characters from the first run and have them have their own adventures. Andy... Julia...   event Vincent and that girl from the movie. Just none of the main characters from the first season. Sure, popularity won't be as good from the get-go for those who just identify with Spike or whoever, but it could do the job.

i.e., I want more stuff like the "Black Dog Serenade" episode. Yessiree.

Re: Cancelled TV shows

Fox is just waiting to faze out any good shows it has so it can run nothing but tabloid TV. Shows that appeal to the lowest common denominator with two brain cells to work with.

Who else would air a show about celebrities without their make up? Who thinks this crap up?
What's next Celebrity Garbage?

Fox destroys more good shows simply by bouncing them around so much that they never have a chance. Family Guy was destroyed that way and if it wasn't so popular on Cartoon Network or DVD they would never brought it back. Unless their is something that can be exploitive, Murdoch isn't interested.
