Band Recommendations

I'm looking for some new music to listen to, so here's what I like.  If you want, tell me of other bands that you like so I (and anyone else of course) can check 'em out. In no particular order.

311
Lacuna Coil
Killswitch Engage
Tool
Sneaker Pimps
Dr. Dre (2001 only)
Outkast (The Love Below)
Sevendust
Velvet Revolver
Modest Mouse
Buffalo Springfield
Santana
Led Zeppelin
Chronic Future
Ted Leo + Pharmacists

Rammstein
Orgy ("Fiction(Dreams In Digital)" especially)
Sublime
Nine Inch Nails
Chevelle
Breaking Benjamin
Incubus

Yea, I know...not exactly sticking to a genre here wink The three in bold I've been listening to consistently for the past few days, the two in red are my absolute favorites, but all those listed get hit about once a week at least. Thanks in advance.

Re: Band Recommendations

Check out The Arcade Fire for sure, they are hot.
If you like Modest Mouse, you might like  764-Hero.
Skinny Puppy were one of Trent Reznors main influences (80s-90s industrial, the early stuff is quite raw).
And imo Fugazi is one of the best bands ever.

Re: Band Recommendations

A few recommendations:
> Code Blue. I wish they had this in iTMS (there is a "Code Blue", but it's not this band).
> Devo, of course.
> Ray Charles: The Birth Of Soul - The Complete Atlantic Recordings 1952 - 1959. Essential music.
> New Order - The "Substance" collection is a must-have. Haven't kept up with them much since then...maybe I should have another listen.
> Weezer - fun stuff
> Beck - this guy is just out there, but in a good way. Thumbs up.
> Fishbone
> Alphaville
> Kraftwerk
> David Bowie (any given sampling of any of his stuff can be mind blowing)
> Rolling Stones - my appreciation for this band strengthens as I grow older...try listening to their older stuff and imagine hearing it for the first time back in the day. Incredible.
> Any old Motown, especially The Temptations, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, Al Green, and Marvin Gaye  - this is the foundation upon which most of today's popular music was built. You'll find many instances of "rock" bands covering these songs throughout the years. Oops...I almost forgot to put Stevie Wonder in here.
> Lynyrd Skynyrd - Don't just write these guys off as a redneck band...they've been around 30+ years for a reason.
> Bob Marley - I don't care much for reggae, as a rule...but I'm convinced Bob was a dreadlocked angel God lent to us for far too short a time.
> Big Head Todd and the Monsters - nice, mellow, bluesy rock
> Huffamoose
> Queen - Freddie Mercury had the best voice in rock. Ever.
> The Clash - If The Ramones were the Grandfathers of Punk, then these guys were the Godfathers. Or at least the favorite uncles.
> The Ramones - The Grandfathers of Punk. 'nuff said.
> Violent Femmes - I never realized how much I liked this band 'til I saw them live.
> Butthole Surfers - I saw these guys on a triple bill with Stone Temple Pilots and Flaming Lips. These guys blew the rest of them off the freakin' stage.

That's all, off the top of my head...but that should get you a good start, anyhow. wink

edit: mad grrr...no [list] tag in punBB...I'm liking this system less and less each day...

Re: Band Recommendations

Jethro Tull - Infamous decades-old band.  I hope you like good flouting.
Porcupine Tree - Progressive metal, though very ethereal sounding.
Dream Theater - Progressive rock, exceptional guitar and drum work
Queensryche - Usually pretty dark metal, complete with three long-haired guitar players.
A Perfect Circle - Tool's frontman's spinoff; they're not quite as heavy but just as good
AC/DC - What can I say?  One of the best rock bands ever.
Black Sabbath - Early metal, Ozzy knew what he was doing back then!
Eve 6 - much lighter than the bands above, more punk than rock.
Green Day - They were great in Dookie and Nimrod, and are great in American Idiot.  "If they're popular then they suck" doesn't stand here!
INXS - retro band with many very catchy tunes
Liquid Tension Experiment - Basically, the guitarist and drummer of Dream Theater showing off.  They are insanely good, BTW.
The Offspring - If you don't own Smash and Ixnay on the Hombre, your music collection is not complete.
Pain of Salvation (their 12:5 album is especially good) - A progressive rock/metal band from Sweden.  Don't worry, they sing in English, and are quite good.
Prodigy - Famous british techno, um, guy.  Awesome if you like that sort of thing.
Rush - One of my favs, another decades-old band group.  10-minute songs, concept albums, awesome guitars and drums, everything you'd expect from a good progressive rock band.
Smashing Pumpkins - Every one of their songs is fantastic.
The Tea Party - Fantastic, complex and intelligent rock music.  Put on Splendor Solis, sit back, relax.
VNV Nation - a British industrial electronic group.  I don't normally like industrial, but this stuff hits the spot every time.

Now if you'll excuse me, my iPod has some work to do.

Re: Band Recommendations

Perhaps you should just find the playbills from past Ozzfests and go over them. Several of the bands you listed have been on the tour before and so you would probably find some more you like there. I've been to the past two, and I took a little notebook and pen each time. There's no way I could remember what I liked and didn't like without writing it down.

What about Iron Maiden?

Lacuna Coil! Hell yeah. In my next life, I want to be Christina's microphone.
Also, try http://www.centurymedia.com   they're Lacuna Coil's US management and they cover lots of other bands.

Apocalyptica is awesome. no vocals. no screwing around. Just metal on cellos.

Re: Band Recommendations

Scream "Still Screaming/This Side Up" - insanely good rock n roll disguised as a Bad Brains-ish hardcore band, almost Who-like at times
Swiz "No Punches Pulled" - think Metallica meets Minor Threat meets The Cult meets Dag Nasty
Verbal Assault "Trial" - driving, rocking, melodic hardcore, great guitar work
Descendents "Milo Goes to College" and b-side of "I Dont Wanna Grow Up" - one is great surfy hardcore, the other is pop music bliss
The Arsons - Descendents meet Kid Dynamite meet Black Flag and the Cro-Mags, this is Ernie from Token Entry's latest band and they are solid.
Cave In "Jupiter" - amazing record, very prog rock sounding, but the songs are heavy and beautiful, in a pink floyd ish sort of way
Fu Manchu "king of the road"- stoner rock at its best; goofy, heavy, skateboarding, ufo's, even a Devo cover, its all here
My Bloody Valentine "loveless" - ooey gooey pop songs, dense and atmospheric, sounds like its playing backwards at times, just awesome music

The new Kill Your Idols record is awesome, the new 7 Seconds is fast like their older stuff, I also picked up and enjoyed :
Isis "Panopticon"
Mastodon "Leviathan"
Hot Snakes "Audit in Progress"
Sonic Youth "Sonic Nurse"

I also endorse evrything in Capt Kev's list EXCEPT I would remove Ray Charles and toss in Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" or John Coltrane and "A Love Supreme," and I would toss out Big Head Todd and add Dinosaur Jr, and I never have heard Hufalump, so I'd toss them out and add in Belle and Sebastian.

Re: Band Recommendations

You have to check out Bowie (as was already said)
Also if you like Bowie check out Spacehog. The Chinese Album rules
Here's some other random recommendations
-A Perfect Circle (and Tool)
-Jeff Beck (if you like Led Zep, you'll like his stuff too. His older stuff is more akin to Zep, his modern work is more experimental)
-Pantera (if you want heavy than here you go.)
-Greenday (I know, I know, but American Idiot is a really good album)
-John Coltrane and Miles Davis (it doesn't matter if you're into jazz, listen to Kind of Blue and you'll like jazz)
-Richie Blackmore (if you like the classic rock thing, he's like a guitar god. he's worked with so many projects; Deep Purple, Rainbow (featured Ronnie James Dio RAAWWWK!!!!, Blackmore's Night)
-Ted Nugent (you may not agree with his politics, but his guitar smokes)
-Red Hot Chilli Peppers (might not be your thing but there last album is one of the best things that's come out in years from anyone)
-Joe Satriani (Complete guitar mastery, he gave Metallica's Kirk Hammet guitar lesson's back in the day)
-Lou Reed (Rock and Roll Animal is a must have for rock fan's)
-Prince
-Living Colour and Vernon Reid
-Peter Gabriel (personally I think he's totally underrated, if you like Bowie you should dig his work)
-Robert Randolph and the Family Band (just getting in to them, but pretty impressed)
-Stone Temple Pilots (if you like velvet revolver than STP and Guns N Roses should be automatic)
-The Who
-Zakk Wylde

These are just some of the stuff I'd recommend. Lemme know if you want some classical picks too.

Re: Band Recommendations

It occured to me that you could go to amazon.com and search for albums you already have and then look at the 'people who bought this also bought' thing. That's a pretty good indication of similar taste.

A band called Still Breathing had a chick screamer who was amazing.  They aren't around anymore but they did release one album.

And check out Haste the Day (the image in assassin_bill's sig is from their album).  Especially see them live if you can.  They were great when I saw them live late last year with Project 86.

Re: Band Recommendations

Check out Justine's and add the Rolling Stones. (For Rock)

Then for Reggae try Bob Marley-->  Reggae is Jamacan Music so you have probaly heard it before but it is worth a try I love it.

Also try Iron Maiden (Metal)

I also Enjoy some good classical,  I don't know that you want to try but I realy love it.  Jazz and the Blues is where some of the most influencial music comes from.  My motto is "As Long as it isn't Rap, it isn't cRap."

Re: Band Recommendations

Let's see.

If you like Tool, go hear some Opeth or A Perfect Circle. Possibly even In Flames.

If you like Killswitch Engage, try some Shadows Fall, and if that sparks your interest, follow this path:

Shadows Fall>Testament, Overkill, Merciful Fate>Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth

That's all I got for you, my friend.
