Question for prepress pros re: gradients in Quark OK?
? For the prepress guys/girls:
I want to do a very subtle (and long - 8 inches) gradient of a cmyk blend to white. Somehow, my quarksense (what I call my sixth sense) tells me I shouldn't be doing this is Quark - perhaps Illustrator or PS?
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
J

An 8 inch gradient will probably be better off coming from Photoshop. Save it as a 300 dpi EPS file and you should have the least amount of problems with it.
Doing it in Quark or as a vector element in Illustrator is risking banding.
The photoshop EPS should have the least amount banding.
I tried to look at Adobe's support knowledgebase but it was not responding, take a look there later for "printing gradients" and you should be able to find a pretty good document containing rules of thumb for printing gradients and how to get the most out of them.

Also, doing it in Photoshop will allow you to add a tiny bit of noise to the file which goes a long way in reducing banding.
