The Clash... The only Band That Ever Mattered
Currently listening to White Man In Hammersmith Palais. Great song that has a point well before its time.
White youth, black youth
Better find another solution
Why not phone up Robin Hood
And ask him for some wealth distribution
Punk rockers in the UK
They won't notice anyway
They're all too busy fighting
For a good place under the lighting
The new groups are not concerned
With what there is to be learned
They got Burton suits, ha you think it's funny
Turning rebellion into money
Just love those lyrics and thought I'd see what ya think?

True that. The way I see it Sex Pistols brought punk to the scene and The Clash gave it direction. As you would guess by the title though, I am bias in my punk. Clash, Fugazi, Minor threat, 7 seconds, Big Black, Jesus Lizard, third try, etc...

Re: The Clash... The only Band That Ever Mattered
I was weaned in my youth listening to the Clash. Still one of my favorite bands. *RIP Joe*
My almost 3-year-old daughter's favorite song is "Police & Thieves". She likes it when the background singers sing "ohhh yeaaah" - she repeats it and then laughs every time.

Poor joe. He was just in the start of a new era. I know that I shouldn't feel so attached to "rock stars", but I did feel a bit of emptiness when Joe died. He was really back in his scene. Oh well, at least Mick can still make it happen? BADIII ?

Saw 7 Seconds last week and they were freaking awesome. They played practically everything from "the crew" and a good deal of "walk together, rock together," and one or two from "new wind" and "soulforce." One of the most fun times I had at a show in the past year or so.
But please remember that it was the Ramones that brought the punk, Malcolm McLaren just sold it better. I mean, I love the Pistols, but just saying. The Clash's first two records are untouchable, but their later stuff was a little draggy. A shame that Strummer was doing such excellent work, some of his best in fact, with the Mescalleros right before he died. "Streetcore" was great.
Best, most overlooked british punk bands:
1 Wire
2 Discharge
3 Sham 69
4 Stiff Little Fingers
5 The Damned

Anyone into old school hardcore punk at all I would seriously recommend the Scream double cd recently reissued from dischord ("Still Screaming" and "This Side Up"). When "Bet You Never Thought" starts up on This Side Up, it is just rock and roll bliss.
old stuff off the top of my head:
Corrosion of Conformity "Animosity"
Suicidal Tendencies s/t
Bad Brains "RIOR" through "Quickness"
Crumbsuckers "Life of Dreams"
Swiz "No Punches Pulled"
Verbal Assault "Trial"
newer releases I'd recommend:
Strike Anywhere "Change Is A Sound"
Only Crime "To The Nines"
Mastadon "Leviathan"
Kill Your Idols "From Companionship to Competition"
Hot Snakes "Audit In Progress"
Isis "Panopticon"

Re: The Clash... The only Band That Ever Mattered
The Sex Pistols were not that far removed from In Sync. They were both bands formed by a manager with a pre-conceived formula for a band. The key difference is, of course, the Pistols made a good record.
The Clash were a true rock band, a great rock band.
Punk rock began in New York and was popularized in the U. K.

List fails for lack of Gang of Four.
Wire is punk?

Lack of Gang of Four acknowledged, and Pink Flag was most definitely a punk record.

Y'all forget that The Tubes were punk before they went pop.

But who had the record out first? the damned.
I said it in the lep zeppelin thread, and I'll say it again,
The Clash deserve a lifetime acheivement award 5 before led zeppelin.
It'll just take a while to write up that arguement.
My band models ourselves after this type of punk sounds. Check us out:
www.boulevardtrash.com
i saw some mention of some semi hard core political stuff, another great Toronto band(whom my singer plays bass for) is quite discharge/scandinavian hardcore:
www.actionpunks.com
Also, other great bands from that time period:
The Boys
The Exploding Hearts(slightly later I believe)
The pistols were band to be successful/in the spotlight
The clash were a band to make music, share the music, and share a message.
Definately the "people's band" of all time as far as popular music goes

for some reason though, i feel that punk just needs to be british.
The best music in the world(and the worst) just seems to come from europe.
that is a wicked picture

Dont forget Television or the New York Dolls.
Why does punk need to be british? That's just asinine.
