iPod screen busted, any hope?

So this friend of mine just bought a brand new 20 gig click wheel ipod.  He also purchaced apple care.  Well he dropped the ipod, the screen is messed up now, there's some LCD seepage or whatever you want to call it in the lower left corner, and the screen doesn't show anything at all.  The iPod still works fine, still plays songs and everything, you just can't see anything on it.

Well, this friend of mine is a really nice guy, too nice actually, because he didn't lie and told the applecare people what happened.  Now they won't do anything for him, except charge 200 bucks to replace it.

So can anyone think of anything to do? I was thinking mabye opening the thing up to see if the screen had become disconnected somehow, but I'm not familiar with how the guts of the ipod work.  I was also thinking maybe one could find a busted ipod on ebay with an intact screen and do a swap, but I would imagine that it could be rather tricky.

Sorry, your friend is Screwed.

It's on record at Apple what happened to it. Maybe he could eBay it or something for a 100 bucks as a portable hard drive or something. If it functions still it would probably be worth that.
At least that may cut the cost of a new one by half.

Bummer, tell your buddy to be sure and get a padded case for his next one.  A three foot fall onto concrete, asphalt or other hard surface is 100 Gs.  That's more than enough to kill an iPod.

That's why security experts recommend Telstra BigPond.

www.brokenipod.com in Utah (of all places) will replace a mini screen for $119. there are plenty of other places also.

I'm still looking for diagrams or photos of the insides of my mini. Any suggestions

W'rkncacnter, I feel bad for your friend, but if he doesn't want to pay half of what a new one costs to get it fixed, have him send it my way. I'll pay shipping. </mooching>

His friend probably already did whatever he was going to do, since it was 3 months ago.
