Re: Better Mac Gaming?

Very nice to hear, Cee. I hope it turns out to be true. The best thing about being a Mac gamer, tho, is that when I'm done gaming, I'm still on a Mac. smile

Re: Better Mac Gaming?

Sorry to tell you that guys... but I think you should read that...

http://www.macbidouille.com/niouzconten … 3-23#10682

Seems tiger is not as good as we want to think it is... These are the results: "Sans ombres" mean "without shadows" and "avec ombres" mean "with shadows".
In my opinion... Apple is not going to make it as far as more decent performance in gaming is concerned....

Cafemacs made headlines in claiming that DOOM 3 would double the framerate in Tiger (in latest A414 beta tests). Reactions were sceptical. We asked a Tiger beta tester to try the game for us. G5 Dual 2,5 GHz and a Radeon 9800 just like our own machine under 10.3.8:

10.3.8:
- 800x600 sans Aniso sans Ombres : 50.9 FPS
- 800x600 sans Aniso avec Ombres : 38.3 FPS
- 800x600 avec Aniso 4x sans Ombres : 47.7 FPS
- 800x600 avec Aniso 4x avec Ombres : 37.1 FPS
- 1024x768 sans Aniso sans Ombres : 41.7 FPS
- 1024x768 sans Aniso avec Ombres : 29.6 FPS
- 1024x768 avec Aniso 4x sans Ombres : 38.2 FPS
- 1024x768 avec Aniso 4x avec Ombres : 28.1 FPS

Tiger A414 Beta:

- 800x600 sans Aniso sans Ombres : 52.2 FPS
- 800x600 sans Aniso avec Ombres : 40.2 FPS
- 800x600 avec Aniso 4x sans Ombres : 46.4 FPS
- 800x600 avec Aniso 4x avec Ombres : 35.4 FPS
- 1024x768 sans Aniso sans Ombres : 44.2 FPS
- 1024x768 sans Aniso avec Ombres : 31.6 FPS
- 1024x768 avec Aniso 4x sans Ombres : 37.4 FPS
- 1024x768 avec Aniso 4x avec Ombres : 27.9 FPS

The results are almost identical on both systems.

Re: Better Mac Gaming?

I hope panther comes with tools to allow you to change the speed category of usb devices. If not i'll just keep panther and write an app to do it.

Re: Better Mac Gaming?

I won't get my hopes up for Tiger; it seems like a lot is expected of the new Core graphic/video functions in their first incarnation. Being able to run DIII at peak isn't a deal maker or breaker for Tiger for me. I'll get Tiger out of curiosity about the first iteration of a 64 bit OS X, knowing I'll still be using 32 apps for quite some time, not unlike SGI/IRIX and the many 32 bit apps for that platform.

I've hit a great balance and comfortability with my G5 and Panther. I look forward to using my Mac in a way that I haven't since the pre-10.0, OS 9 days. I can finally work as quickly as I did in 9. Anything on top of that is gravy for me.

Re: Better Mac Gaming?

Remember, this is Doom3 we're talking about, a game that can choke any computer if the GPU isn't up to speed. I'm sure that games foucused more on gameplay than graphics (such as UT2004) will see a notable improvement from Tiger.

Re: Better Mac Gaming?

I wish VALVe would port HL2 and CS:S to the Mac, that would rock.  That might be enough to get me back into Mac again.

My new laptop:
1.8 GHz Athlon 64 Processor
512 MBs of RAM
64 MB nVidia Geforce4 440 chipset (not shared with system ram) (hauls @$$ though big_smile)
40 Gig HD
15.4" Widescreen Display
Wireless 802.11g card (builtin)
24x CD-RW/8x DVD-ROM drive

Re: Better Mac Gaming?

Peter Cohen, whose MacWorld D3 benchmarking article sparked so much, doesn't think Tiger will increase game framerates much.

Specifically, about the cafemacs.com reference and writing at the IMG Forums:

I don't trust this anecdotal -- dare I say apocryphal -- evidence as far as I can throw it.

When asked if he had Tiger from his MacWorld connection, he replied

I could tell you that, but I'd have to kill you. wink

Not everyone is the Games Room guy at MacWorld/MacCentral and has been running Tiger betas for some time. He is distinctly better informed than most, and again, it's his D3 benchmark article that started all this. No one including Glenda Adams, who posts at IMG, has called bunk on any of it.

Your opinion seems contrary. We'll see if Apple has pulled a rabbit out of a hat in about a week, who's right and whose opinion is full of... holes. smile

I not here to put anything that Apple does on a pedestal, just saying I would wait to see the final product.

We're all waiting with great interest. I advocate nothing but objectivity.

Re: Better Mac Gaming?

10.4 comes with gcc 4.0, which has guess what-- a auto-vectorization flag for compiling code! big_smile

But the benchmarks are mixed regarding it.

Re: Better Mac Gaming?

For those who don't frequent Games, Santaduck at Macologist recently posted a wide-ranging interview with Glenda Adams that touched on that and many other things.

Re: Better Mac Gaming?

Barefeats has up some prelim benchmarks- big gains on the DP 2.5 on D3, much less on other apps (down to a few % on Halo). Looks like the OGL framework may have gotten some D3-specific reworking.
