Get the freeware control panel POPCHAR. It puts an icon at the very top on the right side. It will handle display all of the characters for the currently selected font. If the desired character is not seen, choose another font.

If the desired character is not seen, choose another font.
She has tried many fonts, including Helvetica and franklin gothic - the character exists in the charset, her comp just won't allow her to type it in. She can paste it in from another doc created on a different comp. She cannot type it in.

Re: fonts prob in 9
Actually, I meant to type: The Display in the top right will allow you to CLICK on the character (or characters) and it will go into the text. Works like a charm
As far as the typing problem goes, it could be a bad option key, command or control key on the keyboard.
Anyway, try POPCHAR.
In OS 10, there is a similar feature (sort of) built-in called character palette.

ooohhh... that does sound handy. You know, in trying to eliminate possible causes with my friend, I never asked her if she tried the option key on the right side of the keyboard.
thanks
