I have a question for TiBook users, please chime in!
Ahh, my neverending saga over what Mac to buy. I have a 500Mhz Ibook with 256 megs of Ram right now, and it does a pretty good job with OSX Jaguar. However, I am a poweruser and this Ibook just isn't cutting it with Flash, Photoshop, and Final Cut (I haven't tried FCP yet, but I can imagine)....it does pretty well with Dreamweaver. I have spend probably 100 hours deciding what Mac is best for me....I started with Imacs, then the Dual processors, then I went to the 17" PB, then the 12" PB, and now I have arrived at the 15" Tibooks. The 12" PB is a tad small for my design work, and it doesn't have the same horsepower as the 15" Tibook or the 17 PB. The 17" is too big and too pricey....and I can't easily take it to school everyday while riding my motorcycle ( I will be a nervous wreck just thinking about wiping out with a $3000+ computer on the back...hell its worth more than my bike!) so I am looking at the TiBook now. Its performance specs are almost the same as the 17"er and definitely better than the 12 ALbook. I don't care about airport extreme (my cable isn't that fast), bluetooth (I have nothing that is bluetooth, and I don't see it in my future), and the DDR ram doesn't make a big difference with the G4.
Here are my concerns: Paint chipping (i don't want the laptop to look like shiite in a year) and WiFi reception. I have a netgear router in my house and my college campus is completely wireless. My Ibook gets great reception in my house and on campus, but I am afraid that the TiBook won't get a good signal in my office...which will really be a pisser. I can probably improve my reception at home, and it is only going through one wall. So what do you TiBook users think?
For the record, I am looking at the 1Ghz with Superdrive, and I will eventually max out the Ram.
Thanks for the opinions!!!
One more thing, I have 4 projects due by May, and I need a pretty powerful Mac to do them on...so I don't have the luxury to wait around for months and HOPE that the 970 comes out, or the 15.4" ALbook. Of course i will be a tad pissed if they come out 2 weeks after I make my purchase, but I guess that is the nature of computing.

Re: I have a question for TiBook users, please chime in!
I have the TiBook you speak of, I got it just before Christmas.
It's quite a capable machine. The screen size is acceptable, but as you know, when you are using apps like Photoshop, the more pixels, the merrier. But it does well enough. I haven't scratched it yet, but I haven't tried. The latest Macaddict mag says they tried to scratch it, and were able, but it's much better than it was. I have no means to compare.
As far as price, it's $300 different from the 17" so don't make your decision on price.
The WiFi reception is fair. I wouldn't call it a strong point. Don't get me wrong, it works, but not as well as my old pre 900 MHz Panasonic cordless phone. I am almost 40-50' away and around a corner from my router right now, and my signal goes from one blip to full sporadically. It could be the house though, I don't have anything to compare it to.
btw, if you buy it mailorder from any one of those guys that send you catalogs every 4 days they will no doubt throw in 512 MB RAM for free.
But I remember your last thread, and you still seem like a desktop dualie candidate unless you never work at home.

Re: I have a question for TiBook users, please chime in!
yeah, with the $300.oo difference that our dancing friend with the guitar mentioned, you get a bigger screen, AND better AirPort receptoin, if Jobs is to belived it will match the iBook... So that is something to consider, and it also solves your paint issue... i love my original PowerBook, but it looks like something from the set of the future sections of the Terminator movies... I runs like a dream, don't get me wrong, but if the idea of a nicked and dinged laptop makes you cring, then go AL...
I have no doubt the PowerBook will soon sport all of these features in all models. and by soon, I mean in the next 2 months... I work for Apple and they keep telling me how exciting things are going to be for the next couple of months and so on... (honestly, that is all I know)
I think you are right that the 15 would be right up your alley, but unfortunately, it doesn't quite compete in the two things that you mentioned as serious considerations: WiFI reception and anti-chipping finish
Hope this helps...

Also the Education prices should alomst make up for the price difference if you are looking at the regular prices...

Re: I have a question for TiBook users, please chime in!
thanks for the replies. I am going to buy this from the Developer site, so I will get quite a discount on whichever computer I buy. The 17" sounds great, but it just seems too big to carry back and forth to campus everyday. I am planning on replacing my PDA with the laptop as well, using Ical and address book to track my life. I do it now with my Ibook and it is great. I am just afraid that I will not want to leave the house with that 17"er. Also, though it goes against what most people say, I would almost be embarassed to have that 17" laptop out in public. I am a grad student and supposed to be poor, but to pull out an eye-catcher like that would bring me unneeded attention (and make me more of a target for theft.) I think the 15" Albook would be absolutely perfect for me, but it could be 2 or 3 months before that thing comes out, and I really don't want to wait that long. GRRRRR I wish I knew more about Apple's hardware plans, it would make everything so much easier. If I KNEW i could have a 15" Albook by March then I would go for that, but it just seems like wishful thinking right now. I am waiting to see what hardware updates come in the next couple of weeks, but I am almost positive they will be for the PowerMacs and Imacs. Perhaps they will update the PowerMacs enough to be attractive to me, but right now they are a tad overpriced in my eyes. I feel that I am getting much better value from the laptops than from the desktops.

The 17" is big, but it's light and thin too (wait that's not right!), if you're going to use a laptop in class, the 12" and a LaCie CRT would probably be the best choice.
THat way you could max out everything and still have a few bucks left over for a game.

First off, if they announce a 15" ALBook, it will NOT SHIP by March... I'd be thoroughly suprised if that happened (not the announcement, the shipping...)...
But switch brings up a great point... You need a lot of monitor space for your graphic design, but do you need it all the time? What about the 12" and buying an external monitor?

I am just not impressed by the overall specs of the 12" PB. They can't hold a candle to the older 1ghz Tibook. My prayers might be answered though, if this rumor has any credibility whatsoever:

Re: I have a question for TiBook users, please chime in!
I love my 667 Combo drive Powerbook. It has 512 of ram. Runs Photoshop and Final Cut pretty well. I also have a dual 800 tower which I rarely use because my Powerbook is so useful.
I think the 17 is going to be too big-I feel that way about the 14 inch iBook-big and clunky.
I was in the Apple Store the other day and I think the 12 inch Powerbook is the coolest Mac I have ever seen. It feels and looks great. If I was not already spoiled with my current powerbook I would buy this in a second. In fact I may buy the superdrive 12 inch anyway.
Good luck with the hunt. I would at least wait till you can see the 17 before you decide though.

The specs are great on the 12", for price/size/performance their isn't any other notebook that size that compares. If you need to drag it to school with you it's really the best choice.

Re: I have a question for TiBook users, please chime in!
Powerbook paint was reforumated after the combo-drive was added, so
anything newer than an original 550/667 wont chip nearly as much.
What bothers me is why they paint it with metal colored paint at all. I would much more like to see it chrome plated. Hrm... sounds like an interesting mod to attempt.

okay, but even if the new 15" is announced in the next month... Do you really think it will be shipping by March?

It doesn't seem likely, no.
Isn't the 17" not shipping until March?

Re: I have a question for TiBook users, please chime in!
thanks for all of the input everyone. I am pretty much certain i will get either the Tibook 15" or the soon to be AlBook 15". The 12" just doesn't have the horsepower that I need, and if I am going to spend thousands of dollars on a laptop, I need it to do everything I could possibly ask for. That L3 cache and faster processor in the 15"ers means a lot to me...although i will miss the portability of the 12" size (I will sell my Ibook.) I go back and forth to school everyday with it, but I will be using Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, and FCP3 ALL of the time. I need a machine that will run those quickly and smoothly, and I think the 12" will have a harder time because of the things I mentioned earlier, plus the lower total RAM.
I think the build of the Albook will be stronger (for carrying all over the place) so if they announce it in the next month I will purchase it, even if I have to wait a while for shipping. i will just make do with the computer lab computers with my projects until I get the Albook. If I hear with relative certainty that Apple is going to wait many months to release the 15.4 then I will go ahead with the TiBook.

Re: I have a question for TiBook users, please chime in!
SOunds good man, it is good to know what you want and you do...
Now if there is a new PowerBook 15" it is Doubtful it will be faster (it would suck to have 17" with slower chips than the 15" and so on...) so it will probably just be AL, and have the BT, 802.11g and mayb FW 800.. so if you doubt those will make a huge difference to you, order now, but since you want the scratch resistence and 802.11g (or at least the improved range...) I guess you might want to wait...
It is an interesting dilemna... but a wonderful one, either way, you know you'll get a new computer and be in love with it for a while... Thats ALWAYS fun... and I still love me 2+ year old PBook...

I have upgraded from my iBook (500) to the Ti-1g and I couldn't be happier. As for the WiFi - I have NetGear in the office, 3Com at home and Sacred Heart University (Cisco I think). I haven't noticed any diffrence with the iBook and Ti. Range is good.
