Urgent Help Needed

EMERGENCY:

I urgently need to place a short film that i made at uni last year onto a DVD to send overseas. if i send this dvd it could provide an excellent opportunity for me this year to work overseas, but working on a 2 year old mac (sans superdrive) and not having access to the uni superdrives for another month i have a problem.

So here is my plea: does any one know of a business or public service that provides an internet cafe style outfit but with multimedia computers with DVD Studio Pro? i'm not asking for handout's, i know that this kind of service would be expensive, i understand that.

The catch is that it must be in sydney, i would travel to melbourne if i had to though.

please help a struggling student. thank you again.

Re: Urgent Help Needed

I work for Apple, If you can get ahold of an eductaion sales rep over there, I would bet they would help you out, unfortunately, I don't know you could go about that...  If you are at Univeristy, find out who the Apple sales rep is there and hunt him edown...  Other than that...  I know nothing of Austarlia...

Re: Urgent Help Needed

How fast do you need it, and how long is the film?

Split the video it a few clips, burn it on a couple of CD's, find a friendly mac user around here (easy to come by), mail the CD's to them, and ask them burn the DVD and mail it back to you.  Heck, I would do it for you, but I am in the US, and I bet you could find somebody in Australia to do it that wouldn't cost so much for shipping and take so long to ship.  (If time is not that critical, and you can't find a solution, I would be happy to help).

Or, buy a seat of Roxio's Toast and burn it to VCD (I think all you need is a CD-RW to burn VCD's).  Most DVD players will play VCD I believe.

Of course, there is risk associated with either one of these, since not every DVD player can play a DVD burned on a DVD burner or play VCDs.  Can't they take a video tape?

Re: Urgent Help Needed

Tickle-Me-Eric: Do you mean that an Apple rep would tell me about any businesses that use macs like this?

Czachorski: I need it within 7 days and the film i mentioned is actually two 6 minute films. Pretty much all of my friends use macs but none of them have super-drives.

Unfortunately it has to be DVD, due to quality levels, mainly because this DVD could get me some work.

Call around to Internet cafes; I'll bet some of 'em have DVD burners.

Send an email to benightedbastard or ~Coxy.  I believe they both live Australia and might be able to help you or point you to someone that could.  bb is the moderator of Balloon Help and ~Coxy is another forum member.  There are also several other Aussies here that might be able to help.

Re: Urgent Help Needed

If potential work is involved, can you afford to go buy a DVD burner??  I think that you iDVD only works with pioneer drive (A04?).  I am not sure if it will work with other DVD burners.  Apple seems funny about that.

If you can't afford one, what about buying one, and then returning it?  That is border line unethical, but you could rationalize it buy telling yourself that you will go back and buy it if you get the job.  big_smile

Good luck.

Re: Urgent Help Needed

You could come around to some of these places... might be pretty expensive though, no idea.

That was all I really found in a quick search. (Since I dont actually live anywhere near Australia)

Re: Urgent Help Needed

upload the video to the web.... strike a deal with someone here to download them and burn them to a dvd and mail them to you. it shouldn't take 7 days for it to get to you if they ship it properly. you could paypal someone the money for the shipping, the cost of a dvd, and a slight gratuity. just an idea.... it could work.

Man, I don't know what makes them go. I just drive 'em.

The quality of a DVD made from video clips downloaded from the web would probably be less than desirable.

Re: Urgent Help Needed

Wow, thanks for all the great advice, especially cyberwolf!

I'm going to send an email to everyone on cyberwolf's list and i am hopeful!

The tricky thing is that there is no way that I could afford to have a company author the DVD for me, all i need is a mac with DVD Studio Pro, a blank DVD and a couple of hours.

Never know though, one of the companies may be accomodating!

Good luck on this, compli-geo. Unfortunately, I'm in the wrong state and don't know anyone with a superdrive.

Re: Urgent Help Needed

I can help you get it onto a DVD, since my mate has a dual 1 GHz.  wink
The main problem is how you would get the content over to WA.
If you can put it onto a HDD, that'd be good, since I wouldn't exactly relish piecing together a DVD from a vast number of CD-Rs...

Re: Urgent Help Needed

The tricky thing is that i have to actually sit down and spend a couple of hours doing it myself to get the menu right and that stuff, thanks for the brilliant offer though Coxy!
