What do you call your Mac?

OK.  It's probably going to arrive in the next day.  It's my new 1GHz, 1Gb TiBook.  And I can't wait.  But what should I call it?  As you can tell,  I'm a little obsessed with Lord of the Rings, from which I have taken names for my other computers:

Gandalf (266 Beige G3) has two partitions: Frodo and Sam
Earendil is a 500 MHz Pismo

But I wan't something different and kinda cool for my new Mac.  Right now I'm considering "Steinbeck" (as in the author), "Ferris" (as in  Bueller), and "Deckard" .  I've thought about references to Star Wars or Star Trek (yes I am a total geek) but they just don't feel right -- particularly since neither franchise has bowled me over recently.

So I want to know what you call your Macs, and I would appreciate any suggestions.

Mark

Re: What do you call your Mac?

I named my own RevA Ti500 (bought in Feb of 2001) Atrus, after said named character in the MYST series of games and books. I figured he was a master of books and this was (at the time) the 'book of all 'books.

I still use him, he's my only personal Mac although I do have an eMac at work. His name is Vivi (from FF IX fame)

At my old job we had a collection of servers named after dead rock stars and another of Olympian gods.

I believe slashdot had a good story on names as well (last 3 months I'm guessing)

Re: What do you call your Mac?

my fiance named my 667mhz PB - "Alexa"

2 reasons:

1 - she's thin and sexy (the PB and my fiance)
2 - I spend so much time with the laptop, she must be my mistress.  Alexa is a sexy mistress name.

Re: What do you call your Mac?

I name all the computers on my network after character classes in D&D. Thus far I have ranger (iBook 700/14.1-inch), bard (self-built Athlon 1.4GHz running FreeBSD), rogue (busted IBM Thinkpad 365XD running GNU/Linux), enchanter (old Packard Hell given to my mother-in-law), sorcerer (Indigo slot-loading iMac), and paladin (P166MMX soon to be given to my nephew).

I'm saving necromancer for something really special. wink

Re: What do you call your Mac?

Well, I would have to say that I generally name desktops male names, and I would name laptops after females (at least the latest G4 and iBooks).  Unfortunately, I don't own any Apple laptops yet, though I hope to in the not too distant future  cool  If I had one, I would name it after comic book characters, as is my tradition for all my Macs.  If I had an iBook, I would name it Domino after the X-force character...white skin, mysterious, lucky.  If you know who she is or see a picture of her, I think you will find that it fits.  For a TiBook, I would go with Velocity, the character from Cyberforce...also white skinned with special cybernetic enhancements and a brain chip to allow her to run at incredible speeds...'nuff said.

Re: What do you call your Mac?

400 Mhz iMac DV : Gabriel - Fallen Angel from "The Prophecy" (Yes I know the real story...  twisted
800 Mhz iMac G4 : Hunnin - One of Odinn's Ravens big_smile
667 Mhz TIbook  : Sleipnir - Odinn's Horse with 8 legs big_smile

I think I go with whatever mythology is closest at hand, Star Trek, Movies, etc... all good sources for names...

Good Luck with your new family member and finding it's name! wink

Re: What do you call your Mac?

I tend to go with computer/robot names.

My first Mac, a Performa 400, was HAL 9000 (from 2001), with two externals, Tom Servo (from MST3K) and Marvin (From HHGTTG).

The one I'm on now, a 6500/300 which is partitioned 8 ways, has Gort (From "The Day The Earth Stood Still"), Maria (From Metropolis), Robbie (From various '60s sci-fi stuff), Preston (From "A Close Shave"), R2 D2 (From Star Wars), Ro-Man (From "Robot Monster"), Deep Thought (From HHGTTG), and Crow (from MST3K).

My PowerBook, a 5300 CS, is B.O.B. (From "The Black Hole")

Cheers,
Gwen Smith

Re: What do you call your Mac?

My Pismo was Isis.
My Ti is Chrome... but I'm thinking of changing it because I'm just not getting much of a vibe from it.  tongue
I like mythological names and non-gender-specific names of things.

Re: What do you call your Mac?

My TiBook 400 is known as The Mac, which i would assume to be masculine.  I'm not very creative when it comes to names.

Re: What do you call your Mac?

My PowerMac G4 DP 533 (first gen G4 enclosure) is Blueberry.
My Snow G3 iMac is Snowflake.

I want an iBook or a Powerbook, but I'm not sure what I'd call them.

I have noticed naming Macs is a lot easier than naming Windows systems.  I used to name them something cute too, but then when they proceed to crash every five seconds and are painful to use I kind of hate wasting the name on them.

Re: What do you call your Mac?

To all of you out there naming your Macs:  I would like to introduce you to a world beyond your computer screen.  I though computers were merely tools, not additions to the family.  Do you all name your screwdrivers, power drills, hack saws, and vacuum cleaners also?

And besides, the world beyond MY computer screen consists of an iPod, an old Newton 100 and an Apple monitor. wink
