Re: Football Sucks and will soon be extinct

I used to be THE football fanatic. Not the beer-bellied guy with the body paint and the hat, of course. But I was an all-league player in high school, and all my other league teams (I went to a Division I school where being on the REAL team was impossible) always won their championships. I watched ALL the time, and even had my wife to the point where she could tell a linebacker blitz from a corner blitz. I can still rattle off decades of records, game results, etc.

But I haven't watched an NFL game in over 5 years. Why? Because it's stupid. Professional sports are stupid. Jerry Seinfeld put it best:  You're rooting for a jersey. There's nothing more to it than that. It's weird what they do to normally rational people, too. What kind of sane city would cough up $400 million to merely increase the possibility of keeping a losing pro sports team in their town? Mine did, and the team's talking about leaving anyway. Who cares about pro sports? If you want a stadium, buy it. It's hard to believe people are so desperate for entertainment. I just turned off the TV and started doing stuff myself.

Pro sports is like porn for the rest of your body:  You can't do it yourself, so you spend all your time watching someone else do it, and you eventually get so hooked on it that you still are drawn to watch it even though everyone on screen is fat and ugly and not very good at what they do.

I'd be glad to see pro sports leave my town. I can root for their jerseys no matter whey they are smile

Re: Football Sucks and will soon be extinct

Our collective obsession with sports, and the insane behaviors that go along with them (riots, etc.), are due to tribalism.

If you look at tribes in places like New Guinea, you'll see that they have "tribal warfare." Sports are an extension of that.

There is a reason why team sports always consist of two teams (us vs. them). Golf is one rare sport that's more individualistic. Even tennis is two teams or two people against each other.

We have no sports with three teams on a field at once.

Our brains are wired to react the way people react to sports like football and soccer. How else can we explain the riots, the fan warfare (brawls between fans), etc.?

However, I think football is boring, baseball is boring, soccer is boring, golf is boring, and tennis is only marginally interesting much of the time. I'd rather play sports like tennis, ping pong, badminton, or volleyball than watch them.

Cricket's pretty fun.  The balls go fast.

I, of course, like the real football, a.k.a. soccer.  (You know, the football where you use your feet as opposed to your hands)...

American football's only redeeming quality would be Superbowl commercials.

Actually, you use your feet and hands in American football. We took soccer, added some fun, excitement, and required the ability to do more than run fast and kick, and created a kick-ass sport unique to the US.

I think it owes more to rugby than soccer though, especially since NFL/Rugby players are not pretty-boy pansies like soccer players.

Actually, Football is non-stop except for a break in the 45th minute, whereas an American Football game has about 80 breaks in it, (I guess that makes it more exciting.....)

And the professional soccer (real football tongue  )players will do everything (physical activites, such as running, situps, etc.) better than a NFL star, short of breaking a scale.  I don't see how wearing tights makes you a tough guy.

Re: Football Sucks and will soon be extinct

This is funny and exactly the type of thread I would expect in a computer forum roll   People generally tethered to their computers seem to disdain sports in general, mostly because they were never any good at them and never developed an interest.  I would hazard a guess that most of the afforementioned that are complaining about the stupidity of football have no problems getting on the internet and trying to verbally beat down an opponent in Warcraft or UT.  This is something they can actually do, because it doesn't require any physical strength.

I am on the cusp of being a true geek, being an IT guy and a radio programmer and Operations Manager, but I had the opportunity to play football and wrestling in school.  I also enjoy motocross (I have been riding since I was five), snowboarding (for 10 years), and several other sports.  It is good as it helps keep you in shape, teaches teamwork, encourages you to push yourself, etc...

Perhaps you don't care for football because you don't know how it really works.  Football is not an idiot's sport.  It requires tremendous skill, talent, stamina, strength, and durability.  It is incredibly fast and brutal.  It is also heavily strategized.  The blitz alone is of great complexity as there are linebacker blitzes, corner blitzes, delayed blitzes, stunts, fakes, etc...  Hardly simplistic, and this is a very basic concept.  Look at the coaching.  Gruden led the Bucs to victory because he simply outcoached the Raiders.  He had perhaps the most brilliant game plan I have seen against Oakland all year.  Perhaps the only better coaching I have seen in a Superbowl was the Patriots win over the Rams.

Football is a truly great sport and offers a combination of strategy, grace and brutality that is unmatched in any other sport (with the exception of hockey, which is also great).  It is great because I can understand what it takes for a running back to break 3 or 4 tackles and turn a loss into a large gain.  I understand the skill needed to thread a pass between a safety and cornerback and still hit the reciever in-stride.  These are things of beauty and the reason the sport will never die.

If you don't like it, fine, don't watch, but your insults are totally ignorant and without merit, making you look like more of an idiot then any Raider fan ever could.

LOL.  What crock.  You're right, soccer is much tougher and the players have to be in much better shape because of all the physical contact in the sport.  I played soccer, I played football...football is definitely tougher.  The breaks taken are for strategy purposes, when plays are called in to defeat a certain defensive scheme.  This is not required in soccer, as it generally employs about 1/15th the total strategy of football.  There is halftime to deliver medical attention and to strategize for the next half.  Again, soccer just doesn't compare.

I don't know where you get your ideas on the physical condition of the players, but they certainly are speculative at best and have no way of comparison.  I would lean toward the sport that requires the most physical contact to be the one requiring the athletes in the best condition.

Don't get me wrong, I like soccer.  Playing it was a great memory for me, but it is not football, not even close.

Or, perhaps they see that many sports are boring, and some of them are dangerous.

There are plenty of people who like WWF, and plenty of people who like to write C++ code.

Who is to say which one is cooler?

I'll take tennis over C++ any day. But, I'd take C++ over football any day, as well.

Football sucks.

If you've played football (soccer, whatever) competitively, you'd know that there's just as much strategy, but you don't have a 8 minute break to dwell on it.  It's like the difference between a real time strategy game and a turn based strategy game.

Whatever.  I'm not really that big into sports in general, its idiotic to argue over which is better.  To each his own, I suppose

Well, to be fair, I think you're confusing breaks with huddles (where the plays are called). It's not like in soccer, where a coach can stick a finger in the air, and that's a play -- football plays are a bit more complex than that smile

Also, I'm not sure that you realize what goes on when that ball is snapped, but surely you're not comparing a group of lanky guys leisurely kicking a ball to each other with occasional jogs down the field to the collisions and full on sprints that occur with each NFL play ... even with the 40 seconds between some plays, I don't see how they do it without collapsing after the 3rd quarter. Especially those guys who play in Miami ... they earn every penny.

Actually, soccer matchs usually consist of about 80% running and there is plenty of contact.  It's not big bulky guys in tights running into each other, but there's plenty of contact.

And soccer players aren't a bunch of oafs that listen to the boss, do the play, have a break, repeat.  You have to be constantly thinking about strategy, while you're running hard... no time to relax, settle down and think things over.

Until soccer consists of a 235 pound running back who is capable of running a 4.2 and is well on his way to his top speed lowering his shoulder and meeting a 210 pound safety also meeting his top speed, I will consider soccer less then a contact sport.  Most soccer contact is somewhat incedental.  While some leg to leg or foot to foot shots are certainly physical, certainly full speed, full body contact for the purposes of stopping a ball carrier are discouraged  wink

I have had the priveledge of watching Ricky Williams (235 pound running back who rushed for the NFL high of 1,835 yards this season) lower his shoulders in full stride and decimate bigger men then him.  The great thing about this, is that it is an active strategy.  By the fourth quarter, safeties and corners don't even want to hear his name, let alone be faced with the specter of having to actually hit him.  Your average soccer player probably doubles or tripples his total yardage numbers over the course of a season, but how many could do it if 8 people of the opposing team lined up together to physically try to stop him?  Keep in mind, an average of 3.2 yards per carry is considered very good for an NFL running back.  A few tenths of a yard more, and the runner is exceptional.  With that in mind, imagine how many carries Ricky had to achieve those numbers, with almost every single one of them concluding with a bone jarring hit.

Soccer can't even begin to compare.

You are right though, although futile, I find this enjoyable also  big_smile

The real football, played by the entire world as opposed to just the U.S., is what you know as soccer.  Call your game "football" anywhere out of the country and they'll think that your're talking about "soccer,"  not "american football."
