slow screensavers...

Recently, my screensavers (all of them, flurry...etc) really come to a slow crawl.  I have seen this on 10.2.2 and 10.2.3.  I tried doing a complete reinstall, but to no avail.  Has anybody else seen anything like this or have any advice?

Thanks in advance,
epyles

Re: slow screensavers...

I've never had the problem, but whenever things run slow for me the first thing I do is to run either "top" (via terminal) or the process viewer from the utilities folder & see what exactly is running on my machine.  My guess is that you have something else using up processor time that you're unaware of.  (Oh!  I also have the CPU Monitor utility running at all times with the floating window enabled, to see what percent of my CPU is in use for that same reason.  When you're running OS X with a single 400Mhz processor things can slow down easily & knowing that your processor is at full use help figure out why).

Re: slow screensavers...

I've got the same problem and it all relates back to the video card.  If you have less than 8 MB of video memory, the screen saver can bog down the system.  Also, from what I understand, Quartz Extream is not optimized for ATI Rage Pro 128 cards found in older iMacs and G3s.

Actually, unless you do the hack, QE won't even work on a PCI graphics card.  Its setup requires an AGP card, and if you know enough to do the hack allowing PCI cards to work, then you know enough not to do it unless you have a Radeon ME).

I accidentlly noticed what the problem was when my wife got annoyed that i had the monitor resolution set to 1792x1344 at 60hz and brought it down to 1600x1200 so she could see text and now the screensavers work fine...so it definitely comes back to the video card.

Thanks
