Why are Flash-based websites so much slower on Macs than PC.
I'm a relatively new switcher. (Short background info: I'm a student trying to become a web designer. I started using Macs on and off starting 2 years ago since some of my classes were in mac labs. I've owned and still use PCs for about 10 years. I bought a new PB a month ago.)
I've noticed that viewing Flash websites on Safari and Firefox do not have the same performance as PC based browsers such as IE and FF. Some Flash websites only use a few effects and those are fine. I can't really tell the difference between PC and Mac. But some other Flash websites are a bit slower on the Mac. Example: www.xmission.com/~ncognito/ scrolling is slower compared to PC. Extreme example: www.psp-style.co.kr/ good luck trying to do anything on a mac (cpu usage constant 100%). Works mostly fine on PC (cpu usage @85%-95%).
Is it because the flash player is optimized more efficiently for the Windows? Or is it because the Mac browsers aren't as efficient? Or is it completely something else?

It's the flash player that is not well optimized for Macs. Look for that to change in the next (major) release of Flash/Flash Player. The demo videos I saw showed some amazing things (including realtime effects applied to video) and it was being shown on a Mac. Pretty nifty stuff.
Here is a really cool interface concept from Jef Raskin:

Sadly is pretty crappy on a Mac, but flies on a PC.

This worked the same for me on WinXP (2.4Ghz Xeon) as it did on OS X 10.3.8 (1.67Ghz PB)

flash is a horrible technology to base a website on... lots of people can't even view flash still.

Actually if reverse everything that post, it would be acurate.

No, it is all Flash, not platform-specific.

Lots of horrible people can't even view a website technology based on flash still?

Those poor 2.7% are the old people who don't understand the internet and are still using Netscape 4.7 on an 800x600 B&W monitor.

I have noticed that there are some new add-ons for FireFox that block flash... I can forsee how with the growing abuses of flash for forcing pop-ups and all, that running a flash-based website will become more of an accessibility liability...

Re: Why are Flash-based websites so much slower on Macs than PC.
I seem to have had no problem viewing the mentioned "too intense for Mac" Flash websites. I had problems with Flash freezing Firefox before, and recently downloaded a Mac optimized version for G4 computers. I think this version of Firefox actually helps more than anything and should be an official build.
Firefox Community Edition builds(for G4s)
G5-Optimized Firefox nightly builds
I was prepared for another frozen Firefox session when I went to that Korean PSP site specifically. The Spinning Beach ball reared it's ugly head, but it was because it was actually loading the page, and then finished and made for a more smoother experience. Try it out and see if this works for others. I'm curious!

Re: Why are Flash-based websites so much slower on Macs than PC.
Hmm, I'll check it out and see how it performs.
Edit: I forgot to add another flash site that had problems with FF and Safari(even worse) @ www.dstrict.com/z107/index.html
Edit2: Sweet, the G4 optimized FF builds are faster than the official Firefox build. There's a definite improvement in speed. The samsung mobile site works properly now on Firefox.

TERRIBLE, eh? Check out the link at the top of my sig to be proven wrong, which will most likely give you a sense of deja vu. Being proven wrong probably has happened to you before.
And, in conclusion, take off, hosehead.

I think SEO stands for Trying To Hack the Forum. But the letters don't quite line up.

Re: Why are Flash-based websites so much slower on Macs than PC.
what i meant was that it seemed odd that you were reporting problems regarding a site (which i assume is yours), insert a link to it, and then ... there are no problems with a commercial media design site. just seemed odd. to have that suddenly plopped into the convo.
SEO = Search Engine Optimizatioin
And posting links that refer to a site is a SEO strategy/scheme.
I'm sure its nothing.
