A feature i would love in the forums...
I would like to be able to ban some a user from posting to a thread... most of the threads end up a with a few morons ruining it by trying to makes asses out of each other. and it is always the same freaking people.. if you aren't saying anything relevent to the thread, why respond at all?
Man, I don't know what makes them go. I just drive 'em.

I think it would be good to have quick access to a hardware database along with prices, so Mac users would quit posting crap like "The eMac is faster and cheaper than a PC."

Now, usually I try to keep it fairly low-key against trolls, but hey trolls - this goes out to all of YOU!

Is that a new user name, or are you a new person here?
If the first, then fine... otherwise... jumping the gun a bit soon?
How hard is it to skip reading a persons post? Ya, it'd be an ok feature, but it would be abused. One dissagrement, and (for example) I could ban you from replying to all of my threads before you even have a chance, just because (not that I would, but I bet it would happen).
Sorry, I just argue on the opposite side of every case presented.

no, i'm not new here.. i just hate that good threads get closed because of morons blowing off about stupid crap that has nothing to do with the topic, mostly consisting of call each other names and talking about someone's mother... leave that crap in grade school..

Cruise over to http://www.phpbb.com to see if there are any mods yet that do this as the current version of phpbb doesn't allow this. If there is one then try to convince Nico to install it

It would be easier to just hide all posts by a certain user. Set a "block" list in your prefs, and that person isn't disabled from posting, but you can't see his posts.
Mmm?

There is a mod that blocks you from seeing certain user's posts but the staff here have already said that they won't install it because of the cost/benefit ratio. It takes a lot of time to install and maintain mods and we should just ignore trolls anyway.

Re: A feature i would love in the forums...
So, do you like read everything that is handed to you? Are you not able to filter out the messages in everyday life? Do you actually expect everyone to bow down and worship your wants/desires?
Here's the deal, if you don't like certain people DON'T READ THEIR POSTS! Grow up and accept that others are different than you, visit these forums for different reasons (some are just looking for a little fun) and probably could care less that you dislike their posting habits. The registration process is fairly open (what's the main requirement? an email address?), thus allowing any and everybody to take part in the conversation.
You could always host a new forum somewhere else and pick and choose the people you want.

Unfortunately, good topics get closed once in a while, but it's rare. If you find some riveting issue that closed, feel free to start a new one in hopes of discussion tha better suits your preference. The one certainty here is that we can control our own actions but not those of others, and sometimes people are going to name-call. Also, banning someone from posting on a particular thread might prohibit you from learning another viewpoint, no matter how radical/childish/ignorant it may seem to you. In other words, embrace the differences!

John Stuart Mill (or is it Mills? i get confused from time to time) wrote about that three or four hundred years ago. He called it the Marketplace of Ideas. Ironically enough, this was one of the most basic ideals our country was founded on. To paraphrase 'If all of mankind save one was of one idea and the one held a contrasting viewpoint then mankind would be no more justified silencing the one than the one would be in silencing mankind.'
Embrace the differences indeed!

Yes, it was John Stuart Mill! I read about him in college during an Ethics class and found it fascinating. I think we are brought up to stick to our convictions to such an extent that we tend to block out others ideas before we can even give them a chance to be heard.
Gozer, on the other hand, you have a problem.

He sure does. If they won't put in a user filter there's no way they're going to go for a butt pics forum!

Agreed, atodd. This is the way they handle the problem over at Motley Fool (http://www.fool.com/), years ago I used to participate in their forums. I think they called it the "Penalty Box". The system isn't perfect, but it works very well and both allows people to post and people to block individual posters.
I hope Macaddict implements this in a future release of the forums.
