I might be the victim of false advertising.
As I posted here a few days ago, I just bought a Power Macintosh 5400/200 just to have as a vintage machine. However, I looked under the "Apple System Profiler" today and it said:
Model: Power Macintosh 5200/5300
Processor: PowerPC 603e - 120MHz
When it should have said:
Model: Power Macintosh 5400
Processor: PowerPC 603e - 200MHz
So, from this, it sounds like the guys at ShreveSystems might have cheated me out. I've also noticed that the panel under the display, where the 5400/200 sticker is attached, has yellowed more than most of the unit.
I was viewing the "Apple System Profiler" VIA Mac OS 9 install CD boot. The computer is running the free upgrade of System 7.5.3 from Apple's site.
So what do you think?

They might have. I've never messed with shreve. Heard a few bad things about them and when i've checked their site their prices on anything are astronomical to what they really are.

Re: I might be the victim of false advertising.
ShreveSystems Invoice:
5400/200 16/1.6/CD
WITH OS 7.5 ON CD
NO MOUSE & KEYBOARD
That OS 7.5 CD they gave me won't work because it's for an LC 575.
I know from Elementary school in Florida where we had a mix of both 5200s and 5400s, the 5400s had a startup chime much like the current one on all Macs. The 5200s had a different one. My 5400/200 has that 5200 chime. I thought it was kinda strange when I first got it, but Mactracker has it as being the 5200 chime. But I know FOR SURE that the 5400/120s we had in elementary school had the current day chime. Even more strange.
If this is the case, I will contact them.
If that fails, I'll get 11NEWS Consumer Reporter, Eileen Faxas on my side, she'll get the job done. (at least I'll try)

Re: I might be the victim of false advertising.
Well, according to Mactracker, the 5200 only came with a 75Mhz 603 while the 5400 came with a 120-200Mhz 603e so it looks like you do have a 5400. Only problem is that it;s the slowest 5400, not the one you were supposed to get. Not good.
(If you want to be totally sure, check the RAM. The 5200 used 72-connector RAM, while the 5400 used 168-connector RAM)

Well, that's pretty cut 'n' clear, I would think. You have an invoice for a 200 MHz machine, and were delivered a 120 MHz one. Call 'em up and have it straightened out.

Re: I might be the victim of false advertising.
What bothers me is that it says 5400/200 on it. It looks like the 5300 had a 120 603e as well. That's what it says under the History tab in the 5300 section of Mactracker. The 5300 had the 5200 startup chime as well, and I know that the 5400 and 5500 have the current startup chime even-though Mactracker doesn't have it listed right.

Could of had its board swapped. Or it could really be a 5300 machine with a 5400 plate on it.

Re: I might be the victim of false advertising.
I've decided that I will just keep this 50 whatever hundred because I'd have to pay to ship it back and that would cut into my Tiger budget. I bought it just to have a vintage Mac and I actually got one that's more vintage. I can probably just buy a 5400 board in the future if I wish.
Here's a question, if I wanted to buy the original system software, would I buy it for a 5300 or 5400?

Yeah, if you paid what they're currently charging on their website ($79 + $27 shipping = $106 total), then you're the victim of a far worse crime than false advertising.

That's what I paid. Shipping was more like $35.

You paid $115 for a computer you could have found in a garbage can or at a Good Will for twenty bucks?

5300 - and you got gipped. But you're better off with MacOS 7.6.1 anyway
You should call up Shreve and bitch 'till they reimburse you for shipping.

Re: I might be the victim of false advertising.
I got a perfectly good 5500/225 out of a dumpster at my school.... and my philosophy is, as soon as a particular model of mac in working order is in found a dumpster, it is worth little to nothing. ANd the 5500/225 is a much schmicker machine than the 54/300 series will ever be, so you got hornschwaggled bad.
Hell, trayload iMac's can be picked up off ebay for less than AU$100 here in Australia and they kill a 5400 any day...
Actually, a mate of mine and I even bought 8 iMacs between us from our school by tender a few years back for $5 each!

Re: I might be the victim of false advertising.
After recently becoming unemployed, I'm driving my poor wife crazy so I'm going to be doing some volunteer work in the IT department at the local public school system (the volunteers usually get hired when a position opens up, and I know one is about to), anyways I am hoping to be able to get dibs on some of the stuff they throw away. will keep everyone posted, so I can maybe regift some of it to a good home

Re: I might be the victim of false advertising.
I'm supposed to start up there next tuesday helping out. I came in and hung out with the IT department yesterday and found out they have a bunch of messed up Imac systems and at least 1 beige G3 server system that they should be able to let me take home with me after they make sure it's ok with the IT director. the Imacs all seem to have the blown analog board problem or bad flyback problems. I'll keep you guys posted on anything I get to bring home to play with.
