Folding with Multiple Machines
I've been folding at home for months now on my G4 533 (digital audio) and I'd like to take my participation to a higher level. I've recently gotten access to another machine-- an iBook 500-- and I was considering running F@H on it. The problem is that I don't have a broadband router of any kind so I imagine I'd have to manually detatch my G4 and re-attach the iBook to my cable modem every time it finished a unit.
Is this even possible? If so, do I just register the application with my current F@H i.d.? Does that work? Any better suggestions out there?
(I was going to just try to set up the iBook to see what would happen, but I wanted to try out the new forums and see if my avatar photo worked correctly...)

Re: Folding with Multiple Machines
Hmmm....theorhetically yes you could do that, but the problem is you never really know the exact time it's ready to send, and depending on who your cable provider is, you might knock off your access completely for up to 4 hours by switching machines.
The local provider here in AZ uses your mac address of the Network card to identify you on the Network. I've known people who did the switcherooney between their computers without a router get there access denied for up to four hours until the system refreshed itself to allow connections again.
There may be 2 options
1. Use your workstation as the router through internet connection sharing
(not exactly sure on this one, do a google search for Internet connection sharing for OSX)
2. use a modem on the iBook?
Hope that helps

That's unfortunate, Tony. ATTBI here in the Portland, OR area, only cares about the MAC address of the cable modem. After that, it really only cares that it sees one network device to which it will assign a dynamic IP address.
Botero, I suggest you get a router. Really. It makes life so much easier. A friend of mine was staunchly against it for a long time. (Ok, so it was his wife who didn't want it.
) He finally "shelled out" all of $60 for a DLink basic model which does all he needs it to, most important was having a 4-port switch.

This is a great idea that seems like it should work. Unfortunately, from everything I've seen on the 'Net, it's a royal pain in the buttocks to get this up and running, plus there may be security concerns with doing this on a cable modem.

I guess this does look like the cheapest and most reasonable way to pull this off.
Thanks to both of you for helping me be sure of my options, though. (...and for giving me an excuse to upload my moose to the new forums.)

Re: Folding with Multiple Machines
I bought two airport cards, and use my imac as a basestation, so I can surf and upload folding data at any time with my ibook. Seems to work nicely, albeit a bit more expensive than just buying a router.
You have an absolutely breath-taking... heiney. I mean, that thing's good. I wanna be friends with it.

An airport base station will also act as a router. Might be a good time to go wireless. You don't know fun untill you sit out in the yard in a lawn chair and surf the net.

Yes, the outdoors is a great place to be on the net. However, I've got problems with glare and general bad contrast ratio for my screens. I've got to be in a pretty shady place, or at least have darkness behind me so I can read the screen.
As for going wireless, it is quite cool. I think I'll have to upgrade to an 802.11g-style WAP pretty soon. 802.11b just doesn't cut it.
And I need a real antenna...
