Mac mini
I have been contemplating about purchasing one for awhile now.
I even called 1-800-MY-APPLE today and found out that Tiger is avail w/the mini for $10 more.
For those of you that have purchased one....are you truly happy with it? Please give honest opinions. I'm in turmoil about this right now.
All I use my computer for is music, internet surfing and pictures.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: Mac mini
Today I was working on a Java project (compiling, writing code in TextWrangler, looking up stuff on the net and in the API reference,...) while DiVA was converting an MPEG1 movie to MPEG4 and iTunes was playing in the background...
I looked at my clock and wondered why I hadn't felt any slowdown, because I had set my eyeTV to start recoring 20 minutes earlier, so I checked wether it was actually recording.. and it was..
1.25Ghz G4 / 512MB Ram is clearly enough for me, so I'm happy with it

Re: Mac mini
Thanks for the input. I just wanted to make sure that it would perform well. Question though. I can't add the ram myself b/c it would break off the warrenty, right? So I have to have them do it and the ram cost like a stinkin $100 for an additional 256. Is the additional ram necessary for it to run properly???

Here is a recent review I did of the Mini. This review was designed for people like you with questions like yours.
Get the extra Ram. Yes, it is about 2x the cost of the Ram, but it is installed, covered under the Apple warranty. Still a little pricey, but it is part of the Apple "tax" so that they can say that they have a sub-$500 Mac. They should have just included the 512 MB Ram, priced it at $599, and no one would know the better, except then they would bitch and complain that there wasn't an option to get it with only 256 MB ram for cheaper.

Re: Mac mini
Good home computer period if you are a pc switcher
I would say get the 1.42 vresion with 512 of ram and you get great computer running Mac OSX which is by itself reason to switch platform if you are not Linux friendly person
one thing though if you do not have display and planning to get LCD with it I would go with refurb Imac g5
It is close to the price with G5 processor

If you install a 1GB module on your own, it's one third the price and is covered by a lifetime warranty (just the memory - not the computer). http://www.otherworldcomputing.com/ has an excellent video on how to upgrade the mini's RAM, HD, optical drive, etc... Right now they sell 1GB mini RAM sticks for $125 versus Apple's $325, but I'm sure there are even cheaper prices out there. Just make sure they are guaranteed Mac compatible. Other than that, get the cheapest RAM you can find that has a lifetime warranty (which pretty much everyone has). Also, when the Mac mini debuted, it was a commonly held belief that upgrading the RAM on your own would void your warranty. Later it was confirmed that this is not the case. Just something else to think about before paying the OEM tax.
So now the qestion becomes: Just how tough is it to open the lil' sucker? Well, it took me a good ten minutes, but afterwords I realized I was being way more cautious than I needed to be. I thought that if I pried too hard, I would damage the guts. But as soon as I got one of the sides out, I realized that it was "designed" to be pop open under this pressure. So to answer the question, it's tough, but it's something anybody can do.

Re: Mac mini
I have a mac mini. I kinda modded it as a server....Apache2/php4/MySQL run great. The FPS on halo is OK, utk2004 runs great. This is a 1.42/512MB RAM/80 GB HD. The 1 GB RAM model at the apple store had Final Cut Studio running great, FCP ran without a hitch. But the thing has only 1 RAM slot. Great for general stuff(email, web, etc), OK for pro. G5 is nicer if you got the $$. And one thing that is really annoying is the fact that you have to buy an adapter if you have an old Studio Display, but I personally like the $30 17" Sony I got better. Not as grainy. Oh, and btw, I am using itunes, ichat, mail, preview, and safari right now and it isn't even flinching.

It's actually a breeze. I did it last night with a butter knife. (everyone from IT and building services had gone home, a butter knife was the best tool I could find.)

The link went to the site but nothing pulled up. I even clicked on articles, blank again. Thanks for the help.
AND, you can purchase the applecare up to ONE year after the purchase of the unit, is that correct?

R U Serious!!???!! It's that EASY? I think I'd have to watch someone first to feel more confident before I try to do anything like that. I certainly don't want to screw it up and throw $800 down the toilet. (unit+keyboard+mem+tax)= $800 (in case the $800 number rose an eyebrow).

Re: Mac mini
I have decided to back off the mac mini for awhile.
I thought long and hard about it for the last couple of days and realized that the programs that I use on a daily basis at home is NOT mac compatible. I googled this information, went to the software's website, asked in forums. So, I think that it would not be the smartest purchase for me at this time.
Maybe later on...but not now.
I'm still going to come and hang out with ya'll.
I've not given up on apple completely.

Re: Mac mini
I got a Mini at a Best Buy store. I also play Halo and UT 2k4 on it. Not to mention Neverwinter Nights.
With some adjustment to quality settings, it's a smooth little babe. Also stuck a 120 GB hard drive into a USB2 enclosure to supplement that 80 gig drive.. It's the world's smallest power house, i tells ya.
And YEAH, what apps? Don't forget that if you're not talking games or other hardware intensive stuff, there are options, such as Qemu, commercial variations thereof, Guest PC, Virtual PC, the up-coming DarWINE
And DOSBox. No worries!

Re: Mac mini
Sorry about your decision, but I just wanted to ad a note on RAM upgrading your mini-mac. I bought a 1g memory card on ebay and followed the instructions I found at MacWorld "How to break into your mini-mac", (or something like that) They gave detailed info with some illustration on how to do it. The only thing they didn't mention was needing to move the rectangular shaped antenna out of the way in order to remove the old card and insert the new one.

And for those without a Mac equivalent, there are PC emulation options. Just because there are equivalents doesn't mean one will like some equivalent program. With a good emulator, this person could install the version of Windows he likes and those needed programs without having to make big changes.
