So, I finally got a new Mac tonight!

I'm just unwrapping my...

Dual 2.7 with 4 gigs of Ram and an Airport card...

I got a 10% discount with the little scratch card, too!

Whoo hoo!

Got the 10% as well. But I got the Dual 2.3. Congrats on your new PowerMac. I'm Upgrading from a Dual 450, which i plan to keep in service as a secondary unit.

Congrats, too!

Wow, sounds like you held out longer than me.  Good things come to those who wait, eh?  I couldn't be happier right now.

big_smile

I've been using my 800 Tibook as my main machine since it came out.  I'm amazed at how fast my G5 is.  It's all full of Ram and the Airport card is installed.  Busy downloading drivers for all my hardware.  This is going to be a late night.

Damn, it's heavy, too!

Zzzzz...

Congrats.  Yes pretty much most of the G4 systems feel slow compared to G5s.  I don't know how much longer I can tolerate my 867Mhz G4 PowerBook. wink  I have a dual 2Ghz G5 and it runs just fine. big_smile

Buying the latest and greatest is always a bad idea.  Look at the 2 GHz model and how far the price has fallen.  It's always better to buy the 2nd or 3rd from the top and it will retain it's resale value better (especially on eBay) and the money saved can be spent on the needed RAM and Video upgrades that Macs always need.

Funny how the PC tools always say "oh you should not buy the latest and greatest", yet they complain about things like lack of PCIe and the memory is not fast enough, not enough ???, blah blah blah....

Fingerjello has a valid point, but if you need the speed and have the cash, I say get the best you can afford.  I usually buy the middle model, but dual 2Ghz is working fine for me. shrug

(I am not calling you a tool fingerjello, just making a point)

So true and further proof that he is a hypocrite.

He works for konfabulator, is in love with Apple and is spiteful because he can't afford more RAM.  It is so obvious.

yeah... uh huh... because a single 1.6ghz G5 is really gonna fetch a price on ebay compared to a Dual 2Ghz

The middle system is usually going to have a long useful life and the most bang for your buck.  Doesn't cost nearly as much as the top system, and won't go obsolete for a quite some time.

Re: So, I finally got a new Mac tonight!

Bought my dual 1.8GHz as an Open Box model.  I paid $2000 for it but, it was the first version of the dual 1.8.  The PCI-X and 8GB ram, 160GB HD.  For the price I got it for, it was about $500 less then one the dual 2.0 that took its place and the same price as a brand new dual 1.8 but, without PCI-X and only 4GB of ram.  Not to mention half the HD space.  Was a great buy.  Even with extended warranty it was cheaper.

Now I could have gone all out and got the dual 2.5 but, I would have had no money left for anything.  And the X800 XT was coming out soon, of which I wanted.
I would say get the fastest you can afford when ever you buy computers.  It will last you longer in the end.  My Ti 800 was the top of the line when I got it.  The fastest they had.  Its still working great, cept for battery and power cord needs replacing.  But, functionally its flawless.  Can't wait for dual core G5's.  Then its time to upgrade again.  smile

Re: So, I finally got a new Mac tonight!

Yeah, ideally, one should buy a mid/low range PC and then spend the rest of their lives and income upgrading every few months because they want teh best machine to run Quake/Doom/Other flavour of the month Game on.

What I 'should' do is none of your business.  I legitimately wanted the fastest possible because I've waited for years to buy a new machine and I need something fast to run Logic on.  I don't really care how much things cost and rarely sell anything anyway, so resale value doesn't matter.

Go away and stop being a baby or I'll kick your ar$e down the stairs.

This new thing is AMAZING!  It flys!  Loads of audio, soft instruments and plugins and no HD audio streaming due to fat ram.  My poor little powerbook was being pushed to the limits.

That is where your Apple blinders need to be removed.  Even PCs that are NOT the latest and greatest are consistently far ahead of Apple in adopting higher performing technology.  You don't need to spend a lot to get a PC with PCIe graphics, a dual layer 16X DVD+-RW, SATA hard drives, DDR2 memory, etc.

For example, the latest and greatest PC right now would be a Dual, Dual-Core Opteron with dual PCIe 6800 Graphics Cards in SLI mode, and 2 10,000 rpm hard drives.  Neato.  Well a person with a Single CPU Athlon 64 4000+, a single PCIe 6800 graphics card, and 2 7,200 rpm SATA drives in RAID 0 array would be just as modern, just not as fast- yet in 99% of programs the user wouldn't even notice the differece.  Just like the guy with a dual 2.7 GHz G5 isn't going to notice an improvement over a 2.0 G5 99% of the time.  Get it?

The funniest thing is when people load up insane amounts of RAM.  After 1 GB, the performance gain is 1-4% depending on the program.  Unless you are an audio pro loading up tons of samples into a multi-track program, or a multi-tasker who likes to have every possible program open at once, going beyond 1 GB is almost never needed.

Re: So, I finally got a new Mac tonight!

I'm an audio pro loading up tons and tons of samples.  I've just loaded up a piano multisample that's almost 1 gig in size.  That's a big one, isn't it?  The funniest thing.

And PCs just don't cut it for audio.  Even the ones from the future.

PC people don't even do much with their PCs except customise them, anyway.  PC peoples like to fix things.  It's makes them strong and clever.  They want a beardy computer hobby, rather than do anything productive.

It's marvellous.  You ought to see it, Fingerjelly!  It's a zoomer!  It runs Logic Pro much faster than your PC!  True!

I've gotta hand it to Apple. The "Migration Assistant" made it a breeze to transfer all my info from my powerbook including applications. Man I love this G5!! Now I'm off to find ram for it. smile

I just ran final Cut Pro 4 and I am loving it. A hell of a lot more responsive and Photoshop awww man forget it. I am so glad I held out as long as I did. But also so happy with the value I got out of my Dual 450. It actually still performs well.
