Toggle Line out audio without unplugging?
So I have my eMac hooked to my stereo reciever, so I can listen to some nice MP3s on a system more robust than the little "tin-o-matic" speakers that are built in. However, if I want to switch my reciever to DVD player, I have to unplug my eMac to be able to hear IMs or Mail alerts. Problem with this is it makes my reciever emit a burst of static, which cannot be good for my speakers.
So, does anybody know a utility or system setting that would allow me to manually switch between the two, at will? Thanks for your time!
(I know this sounds sort of silly, as I could just turn off my reciever. But its a 5.1, so it has a fan built in, and takes a couple seconds to start up, so I would rather not toggle it on and off repeatedly.)

Re: Toggle Line out audio without unplugging?
I would like to suggest a Griffin iMic - It is a USB audio adapter, it will add a line in and a line out to any usb port on your mac. I use it so that i can plug in headphones to my powermac without crawling under the desk.
You could use it so that you can use the sound control panel to select wether you want the sound to come out of the mac, or be routed into the stereo system.
It costs about 20-25 USD. Nifty little product.

I second that, I have sound sticks and I have my stereo connected. Also it allows you to import from your stereo.

Am I misunderstanding? Why don't you just switch to DVD then unplug it? That should have no effect on your receiver.
