Everyone should have 2 monitors
I've had a huge 21" Sun CRT monitor sitting in the other room for a while, going unused, and I recently decided to bring it to my room with my computer (1.5Ghz 17" Powerbook).
Having used it the past few days like this, i feel like my computer is 2x as fast. It's really weird, but I feel a lot more productive. I can have the browser window in one monitor, then everything else in the other, and it feels like I have 2 computers. Plus, the screen on the CRT is a lot brighter, and more suited to watching movies and videos and stuff. I don't even do anything "pro" either like editing video, just regular email/browsing type things.
What is the difference between Vista and OSX?

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
I got hooked on dual monitors back when I was still doing print design on a beige G3 with a scavenged card from a Power Tower. It's the only way to fly. At home I now use a 20" postioned above my iBook 12". The extra desktop real estate is awesome for flash.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
In my school's newly built video/audio studio, the three HP's have dual monitors (20-inch Apple), but they only gave the six G5's singles. I'm tempted to rewire a couple of them. Nevertheless, while the Edius software seems to require the two monitors (not very efficiently, BTW), Final Cut Pro makes good use of the one. It would be nice, of course, but I can get by.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
I would love to have dual monitors, but I compute most often from the couch so it's not really feasible. I was thinking, however, of getting an LCD for my desk upstairs. I have an old 6400 with a TV tuner card in it, and I'd like to have the option of either 2 screens when I have my iBook on my desk, or using it as a TV.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
My pop was so impressed with the 3 monitor set-up I have going (1 21" LCD and 2 17" CRT's) that he allowed me to plug another screen into his eMac. Easy to do and it's amazing how the increased real-estate breezes the computing along.
If you have a laptop or Emac that supports it, give the dual screen thing a try. Neat-o.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
At work I have two 19" LCDs. The normal arrangement is KDevelop on the left, Konsole and Firefox on the right. It's rather nice.

even with the 30" I still would want a 2nd monitor, the idea of a having a 2nd "space" is the important part

I guess this would have to be one of those things you have to use before you can appreciate it. Right now all I can think of is the bezel getting in my way between the two monitors.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
Monitor spanning is one of the most unknown computer features. I wish MacAddict would do a how-to about it, just to put it on the radar. It is so cool, so useful, and so easy for a Mac to do, yet not too many people (that I know at least) even know that they can do it.

I don't believe my video card is capable of dual screens. Nvidia geforce4mx.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
how-to?
Step 1) Plug it in.
Step 2) There is no step 2!
I had 2 19" lacies at my old job. Haven't talked my new co into an extra monitor yet, but I'm working on it. I've got a pair of 19" Hitachi's at home which are damn nice. My dad had the exact same monitor I already had so I gave him $20 for it when he was shopping for an LCD. Sweeeeet. But I'm another couch computer so I don't really use the G5 with the dualies very often.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
Dual monitors can potentially lead to neck issues as you are constantly moving your head between the two. They are nice - I just use virtual desktops to get a similar effect. While I can't see two virtual desktops at the same time, switching between them is fast.
I tend to keep my e-mail client on desktop 4, a browser window on desktop 3, and whatever I am working on (which often also includes browser windows) on desktops 1 and 2.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
Meh. I used to have a dual monitor setup. It definitely is very, very nice to have.
However, now that I have thee computers and only one monitor (a very nice 20" Sony flatscreen CRT, albeit Dell-branded) I need to use a KVM.
With a KVM, I can only use one monitor..
However, I've been thinking about having just one workstation, and booting my Server (soon to be the G4) headless, and RDCing into it.
This way, I'll have a little more desk space, as well..

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
For a while now I've had duals on my Quicksilver. 17" Princeton LCD and a 15" Micron LCD. Now that the tower is gone that's gonna change... 17" iMac and 17" Princeton!

I currently have three computers.
One is headless and on 24/7
I did install a gui so I can run gdm on it and log on remotely through gdm (Linux) - that kind of setup would allow me to use my current desktop on one virtual console and the remote desktop on the other virtual console - but I haven't found a need for that yet.
I don't know if OS X has that capability - but it's really cool, ctrl-alt-7 is local box, ctrl-alt-8 is remote box - it's like a KVM without a KVM.
My third box is a laptop, it has its own display ...
When I get a mac mini, I will run Linux on it and use it via gdm remote login.
Same with the AMD 64-bit box I plan to build (using a shuttle case/board)
remote gui login really is a money saver - only drawback is you can't do any DRI stuff (direct rendering) because the video card driving the display is on a physically different box than the software is running on.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
I use a KVM with my dual setup. Only my G5 can use both monitors tho. That works out well cuz I can put any process I'd like to watch on the second monitor and use my other Macs on the switching monitor.

I bought my mdd dual 867 G4 BECAUSE it had a Nvidia geforce4mx. Just so I could run dual monitors. I have had 2 CRTs connected since I first brought the PowerMac home.
I just got a 20 inch Apple Cinema Display that I connected to the DVI output and am using an Apple adapter to connect the ADC output to a 19 inch CRT.
No install needed. Just connect and turn on. Done.
Use the Display preference pane to tweak menu bar position, monitor relative position, and color calibrations.
Do it!!

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
If I had a DVI to vga adapter, I'd give it a whirl. Very cool idea, though. Thanks for the info.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
One adapter came with the mdd G4. I forget if it was ADC to VGA or DVI to VGA. Probably ADC to VGA. Anywho, I just picked the second adapter up at the same time I bought the G4. (Bought at MicroCenter)

no...... and ADC to anything will cost you over $100. DVI to VGA is what you have because they cost next to nothing
