Your MDD G4 came with a DVI to VGA adaptor.

No it won't. DVI --> ADC will cost you over a hundred bucks because it's more than just an adapter it also has a power brick, etc and will let you use an ADC monitor with a video card that only has a DVI port. An ADC to DVI dongle will cost you 25 bucks and will allow you to use a DVI monitor on a video card with an ADC port.
Tiger Server, not so bad now. Automator, however, still sucks.

Well you both answered all the salient points perfectly while I was typing my precisely worded rebuttal. So I deleted the rebuttal and say thank you to Donovan Osaya and radams who type faster than I and also know what to type.

If you have a laptop or Emac that supports it, give the dual screen thing a try. Neat-o.
Which eMac supports monitor spanning? I'm not aware of any that support it without hacking the firmware.
Some other people in this thread have mentioned connecting a second monitor to their iMac as well. Again, which iMac do you have that supports video spanning without a hack?

None of them support it without hacking the firmware.
I applied the hack to my iMac, survived Tiger and everything. I didn't even think to disable it during the install.

Dual monitors are great for work, the ability to have many more programs open and viewable is nice. Then you realize you can watch a movie fullscreen and have another screen for work, and suddenly it's no longer so efficient.

That's my favorite thing about the new Quicktime (and also the real-time, no-performance-hit brightness/contrast controls). Bittorrent has been blazing away...

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
I have an MDD dual Gig G4 with dual monitors. I had three monitors for a while. I had a Matrox RTMac card that added a VGA (at only 800x600). That card is obsolete now and has virtually no OSX support so I don't use it anymore. three monitors was nice. I had my 17" Apple studio LCD in the middle ad the main desktop, a Viewsonic 19" on the right that handled all of my tool pallets, and an old 15" CRT on the left that always had my clock, CPU viewer, print monitor and other things that I liked to have up but didn't want to waist usable screen on.
I'm looking to get a new G5. I can't afford to get new screens with it. I will have to get two Dr. Bot ADC adapters ($100 each) to plug my two ADC 17" Studio LCD's (one from another G4 I have) into the two DVI's on the new G5. I'll probably get another, cheaper LCD for the other G4.
Now a 30 with two 20's..........
That would be nice

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
I used to have dual monitors at home because I always had to buy a second video card for my Macs to get 24-bit color support. I would hook up the menubar monitor to the stock video card.
A second monitor would be a good solution for me on my G5. I use a dual setup at work and am used to it (it's one thing that never fails to amaze PC users who visit our shop!).
Am I wrong in thinking I'll need to find another (cheap) video card for my second CRT? I have a 9600 with the dual outputs and a 17" CRT connected through the Apple-supplied adapter.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
I've used two monitors for many years. Running Pro Tools it's very handy to have the mix window on one screen and the edit window on the other screen. It's so much handier just to look from one to the other rather than have to use key commands to switch back and forth (though this isn't too hard, either -- it's just a matter of what you're used to, I guess).
I've got the DP867 with the GeForce 4MX in it, connected to two VGA monitors. One adaptor came with the computer, the other I got at the local Apple Store for less than $30.00. It's a Dr. Bott VGA Extractor for ADC Video Ports
I couldn't work any other way.

I run dualies as well, both have their own KVM and are shared with my PC, while dual monitor works on the windows side it's very limiting by comparrison to OS X. One application per monitor (save for a few exceptions) in XP, in OS X I love having Photoshop spanning all of my monitor realestate (MUCH more efficient in getting work done).

If you have a G5 with dual video outputs and only have one 17" CRT connected then you definitely DO NOT need another video card for a second monitor.

Having another monitor going along with my iBook G4 is definitely heaven.
Work efficiency skyrockets, and can never stand those crappy Dells at school with only one monitor and no Expos

If you want to connect a VGA monitor to an ADC port, yes.

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
Has anyone put together a PowerMac is dual monitor mode with two non-Apple LCDs? I'm thinking of getting two 17' SXGA LCDs rather than a single 20' Apple Cinema Display. Any problems using this in Tiger?

Re: Everyone should have 2 monitors
I use 2 Nokia 20" CRTs at work on the G5, use an Apple ADC -> VGA and a DVI -> VGA and it works great. The GPU does not care what the hell you plug into it, as long as you have a monitor that can handle the signal, be it a projector, LCD, CRT, whatever.

I'm gonna' heat up the soldering iron and fix my 17.4" Formac ADC display, right now...
then I'll have a 19" DVI LCD, and the ADC LCD for slim, side-by-side daul LCD goodness
I used to have two CRTs, and I must admit, I liked it much better, havin all my palettes on one screen, with my canvas on the other.
