BRAC - How did your area fare?
BRAC is the Base Realignment And Closure report commissioned by the Pentagon to "streamline" Department of Defense spending. If you live in a military town, you should pay attention to this report, as it will no doubt affect you in some way.
I happen to live in a region with one of the highest concentration of military installations in the free world, so I've been waiting for this report. Thankfully, most of my region (and therefore my city's economic welfare) was spared.
Here's the report (link directly to PDF file).
For more information, head over to DefenseLink.
Good luck to all those potentially affected by this.

Re: BRAC - How did your area fare?
This one Seattle paper (I think it was a paper) kept having wetdreams that the base on the other side of the state would get closed. Sheesh, they aren't going to be closing a refueling base anytime soon especially when it has a survival school and cruise missiles (got to teach those missiles how to survive out in the wild).

Minnesota was spared the loss of its two National Guard air bases, although the Pentagon today announced its intention to cut 254 military and civilian jobs at Ft. Snelling, as well as the eight-person Navy Reserve Center in Duluth. link

No problems here. As if they were even going to think about closing Nellis AFB.

what do they mean by "realign"?
the navy base down the street from me (great lakes) is being "realigned" and the army base that closed down years ago and was converted to civilian subdivisions (fort sheridan) is also being "realigned".

Re: BRAC - How did your area fare?
realignment is pretty much just a reorganization of departments and responsibilities. it's supposed to reduce redundent work and assign work to the area that is best equipped to handle it.
supposedly my area is supposed to see some changes (reports have been slim on what), but looking at the report makes it appear that the changes are simply more jobs.

Looks like they closed three of the five bases in Maine, "realign"ed and "gain"ed the other two, whatever the hell that means.

As if they'd even think about closing Moffett Field or Edwards AFB. Any, case, CA's mostly a gain, gonna be much better off than south Dakota.

Re: BRAC - How did your area fare?
My brother-in-law just started work at Fort Manmouth after completing his MBA. It looks like he will probably lose his job. He and my sister just moved to New Jersey and are expecting their first child around November, so needless to say this isn't good timing.
My brother-in-law has never been able to hold a regular job and suffers from anxiety. That being the case, we were all really hopeful that he could handle this government position at the base. It now seems that he not only has problems with regular jobs, but also suffers from bad luck as well.
Hopefully he can find another position elsewhere if the base does indeed close. I noticed that Wright-Patterson actually is slated to gain a few jobs. --If he could get a job there, they'd be near to my parents and his parents (soon to be grandparents!).
I'm hoping that this will turn out to be a blessing in disguise, but it still sucks that he will probably be unemployed again.

We have Beale AFB here and Travis AFB that is not too far from here. Both were in danger of being closed, and this morning, they were both announced to be safe!

Realinging means that they are cutting jobs, but they are not closing the whole base. For example, Beale AFB was saved, but they are cutting 179 civilian jobs.

Re: BRAC - How did your area fare?
I live 20 miles from 29 Palms MCAGCC, but my house is about a mile from the firing range - we see lots of fireworks - our tax dollars at work!
Anyway, as they close Marine bases elsewhere, they move personnel out here. So base closings are good for this area. The bad news is that they train combat personnel here, so the town suffers during wartime because the meal tickets are at the front.

Re: BRAC - How did your area fare?
Looks like NYS and New Jersey are getting hit by this pretty hard. Especially Western New York with the proposed closure of the Niagra Falls AFB. Seems that the most economically disadvantaged part of this state (read: Western New York/Buffalo/Niagra Falls) may see the worst of these proposals.

Re: BRAC - How did your area fare?
Marine Corps Base Miramar: Gain
Naval Base Point Loma: Gain
Naval Station San Diego: Gain
Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton: Realign
Naval Base Coronado: Realign
Naval Medical Center San Diego: Realign
Naval Weapons Station Fallbrook: Realign
It is amazing that this area made it through with no closures. All those bases/facilities are within about 50 miles of each other. I also think that it is worthy to note that the report lists nothing about the SPAWAR nor the DoD Space Command office located in San Diego...

Kirtland AFB (where I work): GAIN!
We're going to have a net gain of 3 block 30 F-16s, pilots and support crew from Canon AFB in Clovis, which is closing.
When I heard that the BRAC list was recommending the closure of ~150 bases nation wide, I though for sure I was going to have to move down to Florida to continue my job at Eglin AFB. Thank God above that I didn't. I would have quit to find a new job in Albuquerque, because I hate Florida, so very much.

Wright-Patt here looks to gain quite a few jobs. Considering it's one of the (if not the) largest air force bases in the world, it wasn't surprising that it didn't get axed.
