I thought I read somewhere that Nintendo plans to eventually branch the DS into a different market altogether (other than just a portable game system), but keep the GameBoy line specifically a game system.
But I could be wrong.I imagine they'll tweak the product once they start feeling the heat from the PSP.
The DS is Nintendo's attempt at combating the PSP. The Micro is just an extension of the GBA family.
And it's a combat they're winning, since the worldwide sales ratio is 2:1 in favor of the DS.

Or more like, Nintendo has sold twice as many DS units than Sony has sold PSP units.

Nintendo did release before Christmas though. Give it a little time, I imagine they'll be even before long, especially if they're lauding something like Nintendogs as a great thing.

Re: New gameboy
I may eventually end up with both, but will most likely get the PSP first. I've played the DS demo in some stores and the use of the second screen (especially using it for controlling a character) seems to be poorly thought out in most games.

Nintendogs IS a big thing. The DS debuted maybe a month before the PSP in Japan. Since Nintendogs came out there, the DS has been outselling the PSP 3:1.

The difference was about two weeks, though, and a two week difference simply cannot account for the current 2:1 ratio in total sales, or the more recent 3:1 ratio that we're seeing as more software comes out for the DS.
The thing with something like Nintendogs is that it reaches out to non-gamers in a fairly big way. It's accessible, and enjoyable by anyone of any demographic. Looking at the future lineup for the DS, the demographics the DS reaches out to are much broader than those of the PSP. The PSP has an edge when it comes to hardware, and an edge when it comes to "cool" factor, but at this point, despite a somewhat shaky lineup of launch titles, the DS has put the PSP to shame on the software front, and it is software that moves the hardware. I'm doubtful that the PSP will catch up in unit sales unless a true "killer app," that sets its software lineup apart from what everyone has seen before on the PS2, comes out for it.

Which won't since it feels like, ne, a portable PS2.

Re: New gameboy
There's still room for good ideas on it, though, but the design of the system doesn't facilitate that.
I anticipate a shift when GTA hits it, though.

Re: New gameboy
Sony seems to be completely neglecting the PSP already, too. Their entire showing at E3 was focused entirely on the PS3 and their pissing contest with MS. They didn't even mention the PSP in their press conference, and it apparently didn't have much of a presence on the show floor.
Neglecting a product so early in its life cycle and doing absolutely nothing to court developers and gamers shows just how arrogant Sony is. They think they can win this on better graphics and specs alone, but the sales prove that is not the case. People are getting excited about the DS, and not just Nintendo fans, but core gamers, casual gamers, and non-gamers.
It's going to take more than specs and a handful of flashy launch titles to win this.

Err, you know that the DS had about 5 games around launch time and the good ones seem to be coming out in the fall.

Re: New gameboy
"It's going to take more than specs and a handful of flashy launch titles to win this" was about the PSP. The DS's launch titles were lackluster compared to the PSP, but the DS has momentum and imaginative titles, which are things the PSP doesn't have.

They're things Microsoft and Sony lack in general.

Re: New gameboy
I do agree its a bad idea that the PSP is getting ignored but as far as the DS having the 'momentum' right now I dont see that either, I know of no games for the DS, no one who has one, no one who wants one, and hell I never even saw any press for one. I dont even think I saw one last time I was in Best Buy

Re: New gameboy
That's an exception, then, since the DS is outselling the PSP in droves. Sony may have all the hype and buzz because theirs is a slicker system with bigger specs, but the DS has all the momentum. It is the one people are actually out there buying systems and games for. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it's not true.

Re: New gameboy
I'd like to know where's these people buying them are too. I see lots of them gathering dust on the shelf, and no one I know has expressed any desire to own one. Using the touch screen was horribly awkward for me, I dumped mine before they started becoming worthless on eBay.
But if it's selling like you say, it's certainly a sleeper hit.
And considering how many people I know who bought a PSP for Lumines, I'd call that a pretty killer app.

Re: New gameboy
I wonder where TwistedGuy is that he hasn't posted here yet.
Particularly since I noticed this:
A removable face plate gives you the option to buy replacements to customize the look of your system with new colors and designs.

I'm pretty sure TG bashed that idea when MS announced that the X360 could do that.
