simple photoshop question

I'm rather ignorant when it comes to photoshop, so here goes...

How do I "lighten" an image with Photoshop 5.5 (windows version) so that I can place it behind some text on a webpage? The help in photoshop leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks!

Re: simple photoshop question

Image > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast.

Slide the Brightness to the right, and that will wash out your picture.

Or:

Image > Adjust > Hue/Saturation/Brightness (HSB) for more control.  Slide Saturation to the left, and Brightness to the right.

Re: simple photoshop question

no problemo!  And be sure that the preview box is checked while you do the sliding, and for pete's sake, don't slide anything all the way.  Slide a lot, just not all. wink

Another tip:
Always work on a copy! So if you screw things up, you can go back. If you're a real newbie, (like me), remember not to work on the background layer! Make a copy first, and work with that. And turn off the background layer so you can see what you're doing. Well, it works for me,  and I'm still pretty new at it, so I thought these tips would help. smile

Re: simple photoshop question

Or use an Adjustment Layer.  It does the same effect, but doesn't change the original.

Fix the opacity and fill of the image, always works great:
