Are macmini's quiet ?

Hi!

Are they ?
Id like to set up one one the bedroom to run 24/7, and im a pretty light sleeper...
I can maybe tolerate a slight humming, but I cant stand highfrequency squaking, akin to the noise my laptop drive makes...

So, are macmini's quiet ? anyone have them installed in a bedroom ?

Re: Are macmini's quiet ?

Yes, they are quiet. Most CRT monitors are louder. The only noise I can hear from my mini is the faint whirring of the fan, which is fairly low pitch.  Any other noise basically drowns it out.  The only exception is playing a CD or DVD, in which case you can hear it spinning.

Edit: Yes, when I'm not on the move, I keep the mini in my bedroom.  Of course, when it goes to sleep, it's totally quiet.

Re: Are macmini's quiet ?

I can't hear my Mini, and my apartment studio is dead quiet. And I have VERY sensitive ears...

UNLESS you put a CD in the drive, then it'll spin up, and make some racket. But if you have it empty, and you're serving a website or some-such on it, you won't hear it at all.

Mine only makes noise when it has a cd or dvd in the drive.

Re: Are macmini's quiet ?

well depends on what you think is quiet. I dont think its loud but not totally quiet either. My powerbook is alot noisier though.

its registering at about 5 to 10 dB. But as it gets older, I think it will get louder.

I don't have a mini, but I have a G4 iMac that is generally quite quiet.

I hear they giggle if you poke them.

Re: Are macmini's quiet ?

Minis are usually nearly silent unless the fan kicks on (and even that noise is very low level) or, as others have said, you put a CD or DVD in one. However, the fan doesn't seem to run very often on mine.  I've got a Mini and a tower PC together on my desk and I only ever hear the PC humming (though it's not loud and I'm not complaining).

The only "problem" is that I've had the Mini constantly spin up a CD at regular intervals while I wasn't using it. It may have had something to do with the disc or some background activity but I wouldn't leave a disc in one and go to bed.

Your ancestors, of the same blood as you, slept in the wilderness. Under constant fear of being attacked by predators, through roaring storms and bone chilling weather.

And you can't sleep with a little teeny fan making noise?

I think you forgot your balls somewhere.

If his ancestors were awakened by tiny noises, they probably didn't get much sleep but they probably did survive stealthy preadators trying to creep up on them in the night. Being more sensitive to subtle visual and auditory stimuli is a better survival trait than being able to ignore things.

What's the point of a post like yours except to be rude and coarse?

Indeed your post is totally inappropriate and in obvious violation of the don't be a jerk rule which I know you have been warned about. I go now to discuss your behavior with my fellows mods.

Re: Are macmini's quiet ?

You guys... you guys.... you should really hook up with my Imac.
It's every maccers nightmare.
works like a charm... and is terribly fast and all that, but it keeps me awake even through an in-house wall.
It obviously needs serviceing, working on that too.
But I think G5's are generally a bit louder than G4's
I've had an ibook before this one and I have to be honest, I miss it sometimes.
If you like a silent environment, then you should hang on to the i- powerbook or mac mini.

Do, or do not... There's no trying....
