boy am i stupid (.mac question)
well hey there. in Mail, i am unable to ever send messages from my .mac account. I can easily receive them, but can never reply. I have smtp.mac.com (and sometimes smtp.mac.com:USERNAME) set as my outgoing mail server. is this correct? i believe all my other settings are right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Be sure that you are selecting the server that says smtp.mac.com:USERNAME. Also be sure to check in the account preferences that you have selected authenticate using passwords and that the user name and password are correct (under options for outgoing server).
If that is all correct, you might want to tell us the exact message you get when you try and send stuff.

Probably, negative young AvengerX.
You want the smtp to be what you would use for your local internet company. So instead of mail.mac.com, it might be mail.dopeyinternetcompany.com

That is not correct at all. I use .Mac with my cable modem and on the computers at school and I use
mail.mac.com and
smtp.mac.com

You can use another outgoing server, but a .Mac user can use the smtp server at mac.com. My guess is there is some authentication error, and usually it is because the sending server's password and user name are set-up incorrectly.
If you use a different server than the mac.com server things like the bounce feature won't work properly.
frankly is correct, and I think the original poster has this right, it should be smtp.mac.com for the outgoing server. As I recall, mail.mac.com *will* work as the outgoing server - at least it used when it was iTools.

Re: boy am i stupid (.mac question)
well here's the exact message i get: "the outgoing mail server 'smtp.mac.com:USERNAME' failed to deliever this message. the connection to the server 'smtp.mac.com' on port 25 timed out." Then it lets me try and send it through another account. which i definitely don't want to do. thanks again!

More info:
Are you on Dial-up, Broad Band, or on corporate/school network?
Are there firewalls involved?
I am sure that there are situations where the .mac smtp server will not be available, and it sounds like you are in one... Why can't you just use your providers smtp?
That is not correct at all...
Nope, it is at least correct sometimes.

Re: boy am i stupid (.mac question)
What I like to do when this happens is trash Mail's prefs and start over by entering my .Mac account info in the System Prefs and selecting Mail as my default email client and tell it to use my .Mac info. It usually sets itself up right after that. If you're still having problems, then it is probably an ISP issue.

That's what I like.... a simple solution
