Re: How many systems have you been through?
Just out of curiosity, what combination of RAM chips did you manage to have to get 486 MB? I had 386 MB with a 128 and a 256 MB stick, so I'm trying to think what will give you 486...

Re: How many systems have you been through?
Back in the day when you stuffed 8 slots full of ram that ranged in size from 4 - 64mb in size a lot of different combinations were possible. My performa 636 had a whopping 52mb of ram... 16mb & 32mb Simms with 4mb on the mobo. Ah, those were the days - when 16megs cost $120! And that was much cheaper than it used to be.
I remember when we added 256mb of Ram to the department photo editing computer (PowerMac 7100, I think...) with 4 64mb chips. THAT was expensive.

I don't know! I just bought the thing fully loaded.
No, wait, it WAS 386, not 486. Silly typo.
Doh!
And it was damn expensive. And now, worthless. Sat in the closet.

I wondered, but I also knew that you could get some wacky combinations. I had a PowerMac 7200 with 56 MB of RAM before.

That's 32 + 24 =probably 32 + 3*8 - not *too* unusual.

Re: How many systems have you been through?
My Sawtooth AGP came with OS 8.1 installed, I've maxed out the RAM (1 GIG) updated the video card (Nvidia Gforce 4Mx) and Proccessor (800 Mhz Sonnet) I'm currently running OS X.4.1
I've had at least 10 different Macs over the years (first one was a Performa 650) I went from the Performa 650 to a Performa 6400 then waited until the Sawtooth G4 (1999) came out before making the leap/ I intend to wait out the G5 (like I did with the G3) then buy the "next thing" from Apple (Cell ??) those G5s are nice but I suspect they will be outdated soon (1-2 years)
My Sawtooth still surfs the net, runs Tiger, burns DVDs, does iMovie (slowly
) and just about anything else I throw at it. Sure it might not be "lightening fast" anymore but it is still going strong after 5.5 years, how many Pee-Cees can make the same claim?

I still have the souped up 7600 up and running, but I don't really use it for anything other than watching TV or videos, which is rarely. So really all it does is sit their crunching numbers for the SETI@home program (I'm doing you a service here Berkeley Uni; I'm devoting a whole CPU to you...
)
I also still have the PB1400, but it's basically just a spare lappy to get me through my school-type stuff if the Lombard's AWOL. I actually told my mum and dad that they could have it, so technically it iisn't mine, but that's splitting hairs...
I also still have both Classics and the SE, although the original Classic and the SE are indisposed until I can find the time to repair them (analog board fault...)
I still also have the Amiga 500, but when I plugged it in and switched it on a week or so ago, it tripped the circuit breakers for one side of the house...pity really, Amigas are fun. Oh well...
The 5500 died in late 2003, and I mistakenly pulled the power supply and analogue board to pieces thinking that was where the problem lay... it turned out to be a fried video controller. A certain undisclosed MAF member happened to plug it in and turn it on before I had put it back together properly and shorted out the perfectly good PSU and ano' board.
However I've rebuilt this computer just because I like it so much, but I don't use it often, in fact my sister's been using it for the last few months.
As for the PC's I still have my original 386, and my Olivetti 386 came back to me recently after my grandparents moved house (and hence cleaned out their garage). I use the Pentium 200 MMX as test-bed, but aside from that, I don't do much with it. As mentioned before, the 486/586 was destroyed inside a caravan on our property during the Christmas 2001 bushfires, as was my first LC 575.
I still have the second LC-575 and the LC sitting in the garage, along with the Plus (lots of Pluses actually)...
And I think that just about covers it.
Hmmm... I dont think I'm doing too bad at all for a mere 18 years old.

The Topic Reply EMAIL. Not the page. If you have "Show post in email" turned on, the email has the message first with the link to the thread at the very bottom.
When I got the EMAIL, I had to scroll down 800+ lines of text (409 lines times two because the email double spaces it.) just to get to the end of the email where the link to the page is located.
How did you not read that right?

I should add two Commodore 64s (one still works...with the floppy drive and printer), a Commodore PET, and a Timex Sinclair 1000. The Commodore 64 was my first bookeeping computer, and wasn't replaced until '97.

Sure..style.
Superbase for the data, and Paperclip for word processing.
I don't know about stylish; everything printed with 9-pin dot matrix on thin tractor feed paper.

Re: How many systems have you been through?
I'll try to keep this brief...
The first Mac I truly owned was a hand-me-down Mac Plus with 6.0.8.
Then I bought a Performa 6400, which came with 7.5.3.2.1 (yes, that's the correct version number) and went through 7.5.5 -> 8.0 -> 8.1 -> 8.5 -> 8.5.1 -> 8.6
Then came the present G4/500 AGP, which, with various hardware upgrades, has gone thusly: 9.0.4 -> 9.2.2 -> 10.1 (but I rarely used it) -> 10.2 series -> 10.3 series. It stands now at 10.3.8, and will likely remain there for all eternity. I installed Yellow Dog 2.3 on it once, but didn't like it.
Hey!!! Was that Pithy? Got a twenty?

Re: How many systems have you been through?
Letsee,
In 1988 I used an Apple II in school. Don't know what system it had.
Then a Quadra 900 and SE using OS 6 & OS-7 at my first computer related job.
Then a PowerMac 7200 & 7600 running OS-8
Powerbook 5400 running OS-7
Then an iMac 333 and Cube 400Mhz running OS-9
G4PowerMac Dual 400 with Jaguar and OS-9
Currently, iMac G4 with Panther, Mac Mini and Dual 1.8 G5 PowerMac running Tiger.
