Illustrator Stroke Frustration

Hello, I am working on a complicated design in Illustrator.I am selecting an object and attempting to change the stroke color. When I do the stoke color turns to black (not the original stroke color). What is causing this and how do I change to a stroke color I want? Thanks, Debby

I'm not sure what you mean about selecting it and changing it to black.

Can you be a little clearer? What exactly are you doing?

Re: Illustrator Stroke Frustration

do you possibly have a transparency setting applied to the object? something in the pulldown menu such as "multiply"

Re: Illustrator Stroke Frustration

Is there any chance you're hitting the "D" key somehow? This applies the default fill and stroke (which is a white fill and black stroke).

I second this request. You really need to boil this down step by step.

Re: Illustrator Stroke Frustration

Hello, This design consists of basic shapes created with the elipse and rectangle tools. Each shape is on a separate layer. The rounded rectangle I am selecting has a red fill and a white stroke. There is nothing else on the layer.I am double clicking the stoke in the tool bar to bring up the color picker to change the white stoke. When I choose  a shade of red the stoke changes to black.I just tried using the swatch pallate to change the stoke color and had no problems-it changed to whatever color I wanted.None of the other shapes I've created have this problem and I created them all the same.So can anyone figure out why the color picker I am using from the tool bar changes the stoke to black even though I am choosing another color? I tried choosing other colors and the stoke still comes out black. The fill remains the same.Again this is happening when I use the color picker from the toolbar, double clicking the stroke icon in the toolbar and as I have just found out I have no problem changing the stoke color by clicking a swatch. Thanks to everone who responed! Re: Illustrator Stroke Frustration

The problem is the way Illustrator handles the Appearance "Feature" that was implemented in AI 10 that allows you to add multiple levels of color on an object like more than one coat of paint. It is broken and doesn't always produce the correct effect and sometimes does what you experienced.

The best thing to do is just apply color to objects and stroked with the method that you found works and if you find weird things happening like the object looks green but the color palette shows the object as red then look at your appearance palette to see if you accidentally added a new appearance to the object and delete it.

Re: Illustrator Stroke Frustration

Another thing which could cause wonkiness with a stroke (although I'll admit it doesn't sound like this is the case here) is if you are using an art brush on the stroke, and its colour is set to tints and shades.

You may begin arguing Warnock's Dilemma now.
