you didn't read the site huh?
Also threatened are the many libraries and projects which VLC is built upon, like FFmpeg, and the other fellow Free And Open Source software multimedia players, which include MPlayer, xine, Freevo, MythTV, gstreamer.

Re: VLC to die?
I'm not sure if you meant to tack on more to that sentence, but if you meant to, it should be something like this:
We still have QuickTime Player, but it actually isn't all that great because it doesn't support the avi container format, ogm and mkv are out of the picture as well. Does QT support xvid/divx? Does QT support AC3? FLAC? What about subtitles?
etc etc...
So yes, it's absolutely critical that this software patent law doesn't get passed, because then all platforms would be screwed.

It doesn't play much, including many WMP files. The Mac port is weak. You're also forced to watch clips linearly, from start to finish.

These are the official ones, so n it wont affect them. But you wont be able to play wmd files in anything apart from what M$ makes.
only realplayer can play real files etc.
And also it will allow the basic patent smurf like in the US "I patented mouse pointers everyone, pay me $$$" etc.

Now I am no patent genius or Codec expert, and I don't mean to be contrarian, but I believe that the patents in question are for the technology behind the codec's, not for the content within the files, which are still protected under copyright. If that is the case, I would support patents for Codecs, because the companies that invest million in developing better compression schemes should have a way to recoup that investment. The content that is provided using those codecs as a vehicle would largely be unchanged with respect to the law, and copyright, fair use, etc, would all still apply.

Re: VLC to die?
Software patent legislation would extend far beyond codecs - in fact, theoretically, they could be used to keep one product's features out of rivaling products, therefore stifling innovation and perpetuating monopolistic practices.
And those are just the short term effects.

So MS can make a player that will accept WMD files? The US goverment and military can't even find them!
