Let's thank Apple for the wonderful gift of Quicktime updates.

Well, Tiger's here and thankfully it brought Quicktime 7 Basic with it. Thank you, Apple. By simply making me give up my perfectly functional player with export and fullscreen capabilities, you in trade gave me a better player with a whole slew of new features, in addition to the ones I already had, that I now have to repurchase.

Apple, I forked over nearly $3000 for this machine, marketed by you as an incredible multimedia experience, and I have to PAY for a media player with FULLSCREEN OPTIONS? Even Windows gives me that. If that isn't bad enough, you mean I have to REPAY for the EXACT SAME FEATURES for each update?

Sorry Apple. <I empathize, but don't post stuff like what WAS in these brackets. - oats.> Tough break.

Re: Let's thank Apple for the wonderful gift of Quicktime updates.

I have to agree with you.  I paid for Quicktime Pro, then I paid for Tiger.

Now suddenly Quicktime Pro doesn't work, it's in its disabled form?  Maybe if it were possible for me to use the older version, the one I paid for, I wouldn't be upset.  But I can't.

However, there are things in the newer version that aren't in the older one that are pretty important, such as H-264...

Re: Let's thank Apple for the wonderful gift of Quicktime updates.

My QuickTime Pro key from 6.0 continued to function when I updated to 7.1.
I was surprised but quite pleased.
Maybe you all should try re-entering your QTpro 6 key and see what happens.

When did you buy QT 6 Pro?

Anyway, at least you don't have to by the MPEG2 component over again. I wish all these stupid codecs didn't cost money but oh well.

Right after 6 came out not sure exactly when that was but when I down loaded the 7.0.1 updater I checked my Quicktime prefs and sure enough it still contained my registration key and indicated "Pro" status.
But I am still on 10.3 so maybe its a 10.4 thing where you lose the key and have to re-up.
I really dont know.

Re: Let's thank Apple for the wonderful gift of Quicktime updates.

I purchased QT 6 Pro 2 weeks before QT 7 came out on Tiger. They refunded when I sent a semi-beechy e-mail.

Re: Let's thank Apple for the wonderful gift of Quicktime updates.

Another fun thing about QT 7 is that it's incompatible with my MIDI sequencer Easy Beat, wich means that I can't compose music on my computer any more. I used Easy Beat to program simple MIDI tunes, then import them to Garage Band for final mixing. Now I'm left with GB wich is a real pain to compose in in comparison. (I'm sure GB is way better for composing if you happen to have a MIDI keyboard, wich I don't, I just put each note where it should be using the cursor, wich is possile, but a real pain in GB)

Bottom line: I really wish I could install QT 6 on my computer running Tiger...

Nope, just tried entering my 6 key, no go. maybe if you purchased pro at a certain time they give you leeway shrug

Or maybe 10.4 does blow up the key sad

was that a warning of some kind?

because seriously, why dont you just make "Waaaaaa I want QTPro for Free" a god damn sticky here because you all need a place to bitch about it, and the Nth thread about it is damn annoying. Get VLC, NicePlayer, MPlayer. Or hell, drop your video into iTunes and full screen that. the commands are there, built in. Move on.

Cant edit, combine or re-encode with iTunes.

QT 7.0.1 has been released.  On the Software Update window you are treated to the following information:

Apple wrote:

Important Notice to QuickTime Pro Users
Installation of QuickTime 7 will disable the QuickTime Pro functionality in prior versions of QuickTime, such as QuickTime 5 or QuickTime 6. If you proceed with this installation, you must purchase a new QuickTime 7 Pro key to regain QuickTime Pro functionality. After installation, visit www.apple.com/quicktime to purchase a QuickTime 7 Pro key.

Re: Let's thank Apple for the wonderful gift of Quicktime updates.

I was not worrying about it as the last pro key I had was from version 3. I paid for a new key as I finally had my new computer.

Well then I am honestly confused because I did the update from 6 to 7 and in my case my key stayed valid.
I have no idea why, just lucky I guess.
