CNET News: Apple to Intel on Monday
CNET News reports Apple will announce at the WWDC on Monday that it will phase in Intel processors into its product line starting with the low end like the Mac mini.
Who knows? It's appeared to me that Apple's product line has gotten sluggish and that is related to the G5. So it could be.
Sorry, I don't know how to make a long URL short for the boards.

Copy and paste, simple really. Of course that assumes that this just isn't a fabricated story.

I thought there was some trouble about posting long URLs on the boards. How would I make it just "link"?

Re: CNET News: Apple to Intel on Monday
I hope Intel will just make a chip that will only run on Apple-made hardware. If not, this will just make a big mess.

This RUMOR has been going on for a few years now. It comes up before some of the big announcements each year and only subsides when the new non-Intel based stuff is announced. And half the time it pops back up CNET launches that its going to happen.

Must be a slow week at CNET. Gotta get those advertiser dollars and all.

Why would they choose Intel over AMD?
If you're going to switch chip makers at least switch to the good one.

Re: CNET News: Apple to Intel on Monday
I dunno. These rumors seem a lot more intense than they've been in the past. It wouldn't be the first time a giant corporation gambled it's future on a single decision. I sure hope the rumors are false, or at least skewed. Like maybe Intel is making a PPC chip, or maybe Apple want's PCIe etc... Not to start another one of THOSE threads

I thought about that myself. Hypothetically speaking, there are two possibilities. The first is that testing has shown OS X to run better on Intel hardware. The second is that Intel has lead the x86 market throughout most of their existance - they might like Intel's track record.

Re: CNET News: Apple to Intel on Monday
How long did we know in advance (before Apple announced it) that the next Powermacs were going to be using the PPC 970 aka: G5? About a year. How many times has CNET run something like this? Too many times to count. Are there logical reasons for Apple to be talking to Intel, such as USB controllers or AGP, etc...? Yes. Is this a dead horse...

Re: CNET News: Apple to Intel on Monday
There are so many technical reasons why this is rediculous I wont even try to list them.
I will name just one:
Every single Mac application in the world would have to be ported over to the new CPU. That seems unlikely to happen.
Currently profits are great, sales are up.
OSX on PPC has finally gotten to a mature state.
Apple made a big deal that with Tiger from now on there will be no more breaking apps by radically changing API's in the future.
The Mac development community seems more robust than ever with alot of migration from Linux.
This is just stupid.

I'm betting on PCIe coming to the G5s.
Intel makes more than just processors, after all.

Exactly. Apple is probably just negotiating for new parts or something else that is pretty innocuous.
