Australia does it again...
As the slashdot post said, I think this says more about the creek nearby than the purity of the snow...

Re: Australia does it again...
I read that on /. too. It sounds like responsible stewardship to me. The ski resort is cleaning their waste. That's great if you ask me. As far as dumping the treated water in the creek or the snow machine doesn't seem to make a bit of difference to me. It's just clean water, and it will all melt into the stream come summer anyway.
I think that people get freaked out way too easily. I'd bet that all the water on Earth has been passed already, so it's not that big a deal. At least the regular skiers can feel confident knowing that the snow they are skiing on was passed by them and not by some stranger.

He went right up side the head of my favorite baby seal
He went WHAP!
With a lead-filled snow shoe
An' he hit him on the nose 'n he hit him on the fin 'n he . . .
That got me just about as evil
As an Eskimo boy can be . . . so I bent down 'n I reached down 'n I scooped down
An' I gathered up a generous mitten full of the deadly . . .
[chorus] YELLOW SNOW!
The deadly Yellow Snow from right there where the huskies go
Whereupon I proceeded to take that mitten full
Of the deadly Yellow Snow Crystals
And rub it all into his beady little eyes
With a vigorous circular motion
Hitherto unknown to the people on this area,
But destined to take the place of the Mud Shark
In your mythology

I don't see what the big deal with baby seal fur is. I mean, they're not using it, they're dead.

Re: Australia does it again...
I have no problem with this process. It goes beyond conventional sewage treatment plants in operation in the USA which dump their treated water into streams and lakes. This process would be considered tertiary treatment. Treated water would be potable (drinkable) in the USA. We have a couple tertiary treatment plants in operation here in LA. There's one in Fountain Valley and another at LAX. There's probably a few more that I don't know about. They pump their treated water into the water supply.

Re: Australia does it again...
I personally I think the water treatment is overkill. I think they're only doing it because of the stigma attached to cleaning human waste...
the process of making snow (crystalization) should be more than enough to destroy harmful bacteria.
Its not like the creek water is any cleaner.

Uh, no. Colliform bacteria and several other nasty bugs endemic to human waste will survive freezing. Chlorine and / or UV treatment as done by that ski resort is required to kill the bad bugs.

Re: Australia does it again...
That actually sounds like a really good idea to mean. I'm sure the bacteria is almost entirely cleaned/killed, and it's not like you're gonna be eating the snow or anything anyway. People have often looked for ways to dispose of human waste, and this seems like one of the best ways they've come up with yet.

Re: Australia does it again...
This is old news actually. Have you ever seen the little signs at parks, golf courses and other large landscaped areas saying not to drink the water from the sprinklers? That's because they're using treated wastewater to irrigate with. Its much reduced in coliform bacteria count but its not inconsequential. You shouldn't drink it as there's a slight risk.

Yes, i do know that. (im in that program) But Im talking about not in terms of 'drinking water' safe, but sewage treatment safe. There are sewage treatments that are being utilized (still trial based i think) where they basically make snow and let it melt.
People arent going to be eating the snow, and the run off would have negligible consequence becuase it'll be processed again before drinking.
Chlorination makes sense, but i thinkozonation and ultrafiltration would just cost a lot of money for relatively little gain.

Re: Australia does it again...
I agree that the UV irradiation / ozonation / chlorination is technically overkill. However politically its the right thing to do to sell this tech to the public.
