At first i was freaking out,as I just bought a 15" Albook and was fearing instant obsolecense. But, this actually does have some potential upsides. Whatever the supposed speed advantages between power pc chips of x86, the fact of the matter is both IBM and Motorola f'ed apple big time, and they were relying on these companies who just cannot produce at the scale that Intel can. Apple would continually be behind the 8 ball trying to catch up with Intel, using IBM chips that could not be put into a laptop any time soon, and which were consistently behind schedule on producing chips. Plus, who are moving into the console market and would treat Apple as an afterthought.
And this takes away the whole argument that Macs are slower and Apple doesn't have to justify the whole megaherz myth over and over. Plus, I would think this might make development even easier for Macs now for those used to developing for PC's chip sets and might hopefully open the floodgates on programs to be produced for the Mac.
Its not certain, but it was a move Apple had to make. And long term it will, I think, be a benefit for the Mac platform. The downside of course, is the hit they'll take on sales of macs until they bring out new Pentium Mac.

Does anyone think that we'll see upgrade boards with Intel chips for older PPC Macs? Or is this an impossibility?
Forged in darkness from wheat harvested in hell's half acre. Baked by Beelzebub. Slathered with mayonnaise beaten from the evil eggs of dark chicken force-fed to dogs by the hands of a one eyed mad man. Cheese boiled from the rancid teat of fanged cow. Layered with 666 separate meats from an animal which has maggots for blood.

You know, I've been wondering the same thing.

Re: That sucked and I had no defense against it. Thanks, Apple.
You'd have to drop a new mobo/cpu in, and since the new mobo's will likely lack AGP, a new videocard, and if you have a G4, a new hard drive since it'll be SATA, so all in all, you'd essentially be keeping a case
Tiger Server, not so bad now. Automator, however, still sucks.
